How can I find a military historian? I need to find out which outfits were based at Tilshead Camp, Erlestoke Camp and New Zealand Camp in Wiltshire UK in August - September 1951. I need details of UK, US and other Allied troops.

Answer
The best place to begin looking would be at a Military College (such as West Point, etc ...). At these schools there is a very high focus on military history (in particular) for obvious reasons. And, you could also contact the Military History Division of the British Army (they actually have officers/historians whose sole purpose is to collect information on the British Army). You might also want to check with large universities, such as; Cal Berkeley, Penn State, UC Boulder, etc ... Universities with larger resources have the capability of employing professors with extremely esoteric areas of focus.

Another approach would be to find a book that deals with the time period/region you are interested in learning more about, and cross referencing what sources are listed for the pertinent information, and who wrote them. Then it is simply a matter of contacting the relative sources.

You could also try contacting the base in question and request access to any scanned or photocopied material they would be willing to furnish you for the period directly covering August - September 1951. This route might prove more frustrating and cumbersome than the others however ...

Is New Zealand an expensive place to stay at?

Jen

I watched this show called Global Trekker yesterday, and these guys were traveling around New Zealand. Except for the main city where people fly in and out of, it seems like the rest of the country is really remote and the places to stay seem like they wouldnt be that expensive. Like one of the guys on the show stayed at a place that had breathtaking scenery and it was only 100 a night, cause the owner was just some guy. So would it just be the plane ticket that would empty someone's pocket if they wanted to travel to New Zealand, and the stay wouldnt be that expensive?

Answer
When I lived there I got around by hitch-hiking (it's legal), driving (you can buy really cheap cars--I got a 1986 volvo 360 for $600), and hiking (the absolute best way to see the backcountry).

I spent the nights in: an apartment (cheap rent, about $200 a month on the beach in Sumner), camping (we camped absolutely everywhere; when we were on the road we never paid for hostels, because it adds up--parks, roadside, the woods, rugby fields are all game), department of conservation backcountry huts (the ONLY way to sleep in the backcountry; it's an extensive network of huts littering the country's many mountains, valleys, and forests).

Also consider WWOOFing (working on organic farms in exchange for room and board--a popular option if you're looking to save dough, meet people, and experience the local culture).

Here's a solid travel Guide with information on traveling to New Zealand: http://www.findingdulcinea.com/guides.topic__ss_categories_ss_travel_ss_New-Zealand.html

Camping is not what it used to be. I've just turned down trips to Coyote Park and Grant Park because their rules are too strict.

You HAVE to camp at a camp site where youre provided with everything. Showers, bathrooms, picnic tables, barbeque pits, and your car parked next to you. This isn't camping. This is basically sleeping outside of your house with all the essentials moved outside with you. You can't start a ground fire no matter how much fire control you have. You have to use their firewood.

Enough ranting, help me find a real campsite near San Jose California Please.

Answer
Henry Coe State Park is just south of San Jose near Morgan Hill. Certain areas of the park are "camp where you want."

I will be going from San Diego,CA, to Fl on Dec 26th, what is the best route? I want to camp/hike all the way.

I S

I will drive and can take 1-2 months doing this trip, for I want to visit hot springs, and hike around parks. I like very natural settings, and camp grounds don't have to be very organized. I like nature and nudist spots, What do you suggest? I want to spend the least amount $$ possible. The route I have considered is: CA:San Diego-Los Angeles-San Jose-San Francisco- NV:Reno- UT:Salt Lake City- CO:Denver- TX:Amarillo-OK:Oklahoma City- AK:Little Rock- TN:Memphis-Nashville- NC:Ashville-GA:Savannah- FL:Jacksonville
Please suggest any parks, camp grounds, nudist natural out of the way hot springs, hike routes, very inexpensive safe motels/hotels, budget healthy restaurants/meals to eat, and any other things I must see or do on this route. Also any gear or clothing I have to consider for the trip. If you have any route changes please suggest it too. I am not pressed for time, but will be pressed for money. Consider only the places you are an expert at or have been to yourself.

Answer
Hippy Hollow in Austin, Tx (McGreggor Park) is the only legal nudist beach in Texas. It's on the shores of Lake Travis near Round Rock.

At least 3,000 women held paid nursing postions in the north and South, and thousands of others worked as volunteers. "The war is certainly ours as well as men's" said Kate Cummings of Mobile, Alabama, who became the matron of a large Confederate hospital.

Women played a vital role in collecting and delivering essentil supplies of food and medicines to the army. In the north their efforts developed into the United States Sanitary Commission, which performed a critical role in providing food and medical services for the soldiers. "The necessary supplies are almost unversally collected, assorted, and dispatched, and re-collected, re-assorted and re-dispatched, by women, representing with great impartiality every grade of society in the Republic" said Alfred Bloor of the Sanitary Commission.

Clara Barton began actively soliciting donations and supplies, and delivering them to the Union Army. At first she distributed her supplies at hospitals, then began meeting ships and trains carrying wounded soliders home, and finally began delivering to the front. Her courage under fire was legendary. At Antiem, when doctors were not available, she removed a bullet from a soldier's face while another wounded man held his head still. Later, when the operating room came under fire and the male assistants fled, Barton stayed to hold down the table where a surgeon was operating. "I am a U.S. soldier you know and therefore not supposed to be susceptible to fear" she said.

Mary Ann ("Mother" Bickerdyke) first arrived at any army camp in Cairo, Illinois, to deliver a relief fund. Seeing the filthy, overcrowded hospital tents, she simply got to work cleaning and nursing, without asking anyone's permission. In four years she trotted across nineteen battlefields searching for wounded. She was famous for ordering everyone around, and her reputation gave her the clout to get away with it. An army surgeon who challenged one of her orders was told "Mother Bickerdyke outranks everyone, even Lincoln."

An estimated 400 women disguised themselves as men to fight in the war. Many also served as spies. The most famous Southern spy was Belle Boyd. Taking advantage of Union soldiers gallantry towards a beautiful teenage girl, she served as a courier for the Confederate intelligence service and delivered information on troop size and placement she had picked up from her admirers. On her final mission, Belle sailed to England carrying Confederate dispatches and was captured by a Union blockade. She later married the Union officer who had taken command of her captured steamer.

Harriet Tubman, the former slave who before the Civil War returned to the south many times to save other slaves, worked for the Union Army as a spy and scout, bringing back reports from informants on the other side of the Confederate lines. "Col. Montgomery and his gallant band of 300 black soldiers under the guidance of a black woman, dashed into the enemy's country, struck a bold and effective blow, destroying commissary, stores, cotton and lordly dwellings" stated a report at the time.

Mary Walker, who served as a surgeon with the Union Army, became the first and only woman to win the Congressional medal of honour, for her gallantry under fire at Gettysburg and other battles.

Many women took over clerical jobs that had been vacated by men, working in the Treasury for instance. Other women took jobs doing 'piecework' sewing clothing for the army, or worked in munitions, packing cartridges.

A lot of women took over the running of family farms and businesses while their husbands were away. In the south, the sight of a woman pushing a plough became a common one. Many southern women became fed up with being left to cope alone, and tried to persuade their husbands to desert and come home to help feed their families.

I know the basics - water, canned goods, flashlights, batteries - do you have anything else to add to this?

Answer
Clean containers for storing drinking water: Figure you will need a gallon per person per day for drinking and sanitation. Have a two-week supply on hand for each person. Use clean containers for storing drinking water. Food-grade plastic containers that have screw caps, such as 2-liter soda bottles, are best. Plastic milk jugs, though they can be leaky, will do in a pinch.

Gallon-sized freezer bags for making ice: You'll want to fill them with water and freeze as many as you can a few days before the storm is expected to arrive.

Household bleach, without lemon scent, to purify water.

Tools: hammer and nails; ax or hatchet; crowbar; screwdrivers; pliers; a drill (consider battery-powered) with screwdriver bits and adapters to install bolts; extra fasteners and bolts for shutters; a knife; handsaw.

Duct tape and masking tape.

Flashlight for each member of the family with extra batteries

Radio or battery-powered TV with extra batteries

Fire extinguisher

Lantern with extra fuel or batteries

Matches: Wooden kitchen matches are best. Keep them dry in a plastic bag or plastic film container.

A charcoal or gas grill with a supply of fuel so you can cook if you are left without electricity or gas. Never use a grill inside.

Fuel for your generator or chain saw

Sterno stove, with extra fuel

Oven mitts, for handling hot cookware.

Disposable plastic eating utensils, to help you save water.

Hand-operated can opener

Soap with a covered plastic container

Toiletries

Toilet paper. Keep it dry in plastic bags.

Needle and thread

Mosquito repellent

A first aid kit See a list of suggested items here.

Extra prescription medications, enough for a month.

Disposable diapers and wipes

Cat litter, which also is good for soaking up spills.

A two week supply of food for your pets

Several boxes of garbage bags, with ties, to collect refuse and store goods to keep them dry.

Large plastic trash cans with sealing lids work well for the storage of most items. As alternatives, try duffel bags, camping backpacks or cardboard boxes.

Rope or heavy cord. Get 100 feet. It can be useful an many ways. As a clothesline, for example.

Tarpaulin, canvas or 6-mil plastic sheeting. Good for making temporary roof repairs or tents.

Safety razor blades

Whistle or air horn

Money (most ATMs will not be operational)

Q. i'd be in Dubai for 4d/3n this coming May. Can somebody tell me what to do, which place to go for some shopping and leisure?

Answer
You can also ask this at the Dubai section.

If you can afford it, stay in one of the hotels in Medinat Jumeirah, Dubai Marina or the newly opened Atlantis. Dubai is all about luxury.

Here are my recommendations for places of interest:
1) MEDINAT JUMEIRAH to see the landmark Burj Al Arab hotel, wander through the indoor souq of Medinat for antiques and exotic souvenir, enjoy lebanese food and shisha at one of the restaurants fronting the lovely creek or treat yourself to an expensive meal at the Al Qasr Hotel or Burj Al Arab (underwater / top floor)

2) Take a "palm cruise" in traditional arabian boat (called dhow) to see the famous palm-shaped landscape

3) View the biggest aquarium in the world and have fun at the water park at the Atlantis hotel

4) Global Village with showcase of different cultures and plenty more exotic shopping

5) Take a daytrip to the desert for sand dune bashing, dinner in bedouine camp and a good belly dance show

6) Beach out at Dubai Marina, get some spa treatment at one of the hotels. Better yet, stay in one of them. I had a great time at Haptoor Grand.

7) Take a peek at Old Dubai. Walk along / cruise the creek, enjoy authentic arabian cuisine, get lost in the old Diera Souq

8) Mall of the Emirates with indoor ski and lots of great shopping

9) Check out the brand new Dubai Mall right next to the really tall building 'Burj Dubai' under construction. I haven't been there but it must be awesome

Dubai's a really fun place if you aren't touring alone.

I have short-listed 3 locations but unsure where to go. Either Namibia, Mumbai in India or Shanghai in China. I do not know which is better or the different advantages.

Answer
My pick would be Namibia but it's really about what you like.

You can go sandboarding in Namibia, see some of the largest sand dunes in the world, beautiful landscapes, go on a wildlife safari, stars are amazing at night - you can see the milky way there brighter than most places on earth. I recommend going on a camping tour if you go to Namibia - with cardboard box or wild dogs. The campsites there are very clean (at least when I went two years ago) and at some camp sites, you'll feel like you're the only people in the whole world . I recommend doing a safari at a private reserve in Kruger National Park as well since you have to have a flight stop in South Africa anyway. No nightlife really in Namibia. You mostly go to sleep early and wake up early. South africa has more to offer too if you had time to spend more time there in addition to Namibia (though I liked Namibia more than SA, I'm glad I saw both).

Shanghai is the total opposite of Namibia. If you want to experience a very big city with great chinese food - Shanghai is great.

I've never been to Mumbai so can't say much about it. Is India very safe?

You really should get some travel books on each area.

Why does my friend believe in this crap?

Ok, let me list what he believes is going to happen this year.
1) He believes New World Order is going to happen.
2) He believes in Illuminati.
3) Martial law is going to come soon.
4) People will find out that weed cures cancer (wtf.)
5) FEMA camps
He gets his information from Info Wars, Before Its News, and Prison Planet. I don`t believe in this because I have heard that Alex Jones is a nut job and Before Its News is a hoax site.
What do yall think of this??

Answer
-The DunningâKruger effect is a cognitive bias in which unskilled individuals suffer from illusory superiority, mistakenly rating their ability much higher than average. This bias is attributed to a metacognitive inability of the unskilled to recognize their mistakes.[1]
Actual competence may weaken self-confidence, as competent individuals may falsely assume that others have an equivalent understanding. As Kruger and Dunning conclude, "the miscalibration of the incompetent stems from an error about the self, whereas the miscalibration of the highly competent stems from an error about others" (p. 1127).[2]-

-Confirmation bias (also called confirmatory bias or myside bias) is a tendency of people to favor information that confirms their beliefs or hypotheses.[Note 1][1] People display this bias when they gather or remember information selectively, or when they interpret it in a biased way. The effect is stronger for emotionally charged issues and for deeply entrenched beliefs. For example, in reading about gun control, people usually prefer sources that affirm their existing attitudes. They also tend to interpret ambiguous evidence as supporting their existing position. Biased search, interpretation and memory have been invoked to explain attitude polarization (when a disagreement becomes more extreme even though the different parties are exposed to the same evidence), belief perseverance (when beliefs persist after the evidence for them is shown to be false), the irrational primacy effect (a greater reliance on information encountered early in a series) and illusory correlation (when people falsely perceive an association between two events or situations).-

I know that's a tall order but we're trying to find a place to camp. We bought a used tent trailer to fix up and now can't find a place that's under 40$ a night (per family/site - not per person) to stay.

Anyone know of a place in Ontario that would be under 30$ (family of three - mom, dad and 18 month old) that we could camp for a few days?

Thanks!

my family and I, consisting of people ages 16-20 so teens pretty much want to go to a new exciting place that is really cool. we live in brantford so we want a camping place that isnt more than 4 hours away and camping spots that are enclosed. we went to Grundy lake last year.. that was cool. does anyone have any suggestions?

Answer
I just booked Grundy for my boyfriend, myself, and our dog for this summer, it looks beautiful!

Are you looking for Ontario Parks? I've heard great things about Bon Echo:
http://www.ontarioparks.com/english/bone.html

It looks stunning, and there are apparently a lot of great hiking trails, as well as canoeing, swimming, fishing, etc.

The Pinery is always a good time, I'll bet the teens would have a blast. We used to go there all of the time when I was in highschool. Its just outside of Grand Bend, so its convenient to take the drive into town and go for lunch or do some shopping on the main strip. If you are out there on a holiday weekend though, its pretty busy *everywhere*. But the beaches are great, there are some light hiking/walking trails, and the park is very well maintained:

I'm wanting to start up a charitable organization for kids whose parents either are currently battling cancer or whose parents have passed away from cancer. As part of the organization I'd like to maybe start a summer camp where kids can come to get away from everything and be with others who are going through the same thing. I'd like to have the usual summer camp acitivites there.
Aside from the camp, I'd like to have a year-round place where kids can go and support each other and get information and advice.
Any ideas on how to get this kind of thing started? Any tips or information you can provide would be really helpful. Thanks!

Answer
I would contact one of the following places and ask for advise:

http://www.alfoundationforoncology.org/campnewhope.php

These are just a few. I did a google search: cancer parents kids camp

I'm getting ready to set up an organization much like Make A Wish. My son, 24, has brain cancer. There just aren't any organizations like Make A Wish for this middle age category. You have to be young or old. Wish me luck!

That sounds like a very worthy effort. In fact, there are a few organizations doing this - so you could either join forces to help them or contact them for ideas in replicating their model in your community.

A good starting point would be Camp Kesem National at www.campkesem.org.

I live in Boston and my buddy lives in Portland, ME. I would like to find some place within two hours of both cities to take our families camping. We prefer rustic camping and I dislike RV's. I think the Old Orchard / southern Saco River area is too built up - too noisy and too busy. Any ideas?

Please recommend an 8 or 10 person family tent for us?

Jack

Can anyone recommend a tent that would be big enough for me, my wife , and 3 children? My youngest will be sleeping in a pack and play.

Would like a bathtub floor, good ventilation. A canopy over the front door would be a great bonus. I like the idea of divided rooms.

We are not camping anywhere very cold.. but would need something that will stand up to rain.

We are considering a family camping tent a friend is using.

Answer
Your best bet is a 6-man and a 4-man, with the two oldest in the 4. Consider one quality tent (REI? Sierra Designs? Big Agnes?) and one cheapie (Eureka Tetragon 8?) and upgrade later. Anything over 6 is difficult to set up, is bigger than most ideal spaces (10X10) at the campsite, usually is under-engineered with poles too thin for the amount of "canvas" they're holding up, have too thin a denier of fabric, large to transport and possibly compromised with steel poles, lack full-coverage rainflys, have screen porches you will almost never use, etc. Those huge tents are great for long-term or seasonal setups but are a real PIA for typical 3-day weekend camping. The advice above regarding Costco Coleman tents is good advice, while they are the bottom-rung in quality, the low Big Box price makes parting less difficult and at least you're out there gaining experience.

How to fix the broken camping tent poles?

good family camping tents
on Six great family camping tents
good family camping tents image

Adela

I found one of my family tent poles is broken. How to fix that?

Answer
The easier way to fix the tent poles is to use tent pole repair sleeves. You should count your broken tent poles then go to a sporting goods store and buy as many sleeves as you have broken tent poles. Slip the tent pole repair sleeve over the broken tent pole, and wrap duct tape around the top and bottom of the sleeve to further secure it in place.

If you are not able to find a tent repair sleeve in the nearby store, you can go to a hardware store and buy some aluminum roof flashing and nylon clamps. These things can also help you to fix the tent poles. You need to cut the aluminum flashing to size with tin snips and wrap it around the broken sections of the tent pole. After that, put clamps at the top and bottom of the sleeve you have created to secure it in place. At last, you need to wrap the aluminum flashing with duct tape to cover any sharp edges.

Any suggestions on where to camp in California?

AJ

My family and I are looking for a great place to camp in California. We love being surrounded by redwoods, but would like to stay near central California (close to where we live). Yosemite is booked and we have stayed at the KOA in Santa Cruz and liked it. Does anyone have any other suggestions on great places for a family with young children?

Answer
Good evening AJ,

I hope you are having a great day. AJ, it is very hard to pick out a good location if I do not know what type camping you mean? Do you like tent, cabin, or sleeping bags? I like rough areas with fly fishing and hiking. I made three (3) trips last year into the Mighty High Sierras Mountains. I usually hike over Kearsarge Pass, which is an old Indian trail, to Bull Frog at 10,000 feet. I have been camping and hiking the Sierras since 1958.

I remember as kids we would lie in our sleeping bags and count shooting stars all night. Your mind would run amok with the wonders and vastness of space. You could point out and view constellations which until then were part of chapters in a school text book. We would fall asleep viewing the heavens and our own Milky Way.

http://www.naturalbornhikers.com/KearsargePass/KearsargePass.htm

Some of my best camping trips were with my family as a kid in Yosemite. We could not wait to see the fire falls at night (website below). I feel so sorry for people like you and your family, especially the kids. The fire falls stopped in 1968. Today, you must have an appointment for two years in advance to get a camping spot. The crowds are unbelievable, times change.

As for your question, I ready do not know how rough you want. Try Cedar Grove in Kings Canyon National Park. They should have some openings. I tried to give websites with phone numbers.

My favorite camping locations are along the Kern River. I can always find a good location because I know the area like the back of my hand. The camping can be mild to rough. I have included websites with phone numbers. On the first website, click on Hospital Flat and Camp 3. Both sites are right next to slow moving riverâ¦.great areas for kids.

What do I expect when moving from California to Washington State?

best camping site in wa
on Of The United States: From The Accession Of George Washington ...
best camping site in wa image

Mother of

My fiancé and I are moving from the Bay Area to Washington by September of this year. Since we are quite done with the CA city lifestyle, we were hoping for some tips, pointers, and personal experiences.

What we don't care for:

Smog, dirty cities, conservative mindsets, hate of any kind, social media trends, materialistic personalities, emergency sirens going off every night, disrespectful neighbors, crammed houses, mass produced unhealthy food, everyone and their mom on man made drugs, overload of clustered pop dance clubs, not seeing any stars at night, hot humid mosquito filled weather, nor cal/so cal gang nonsense...

What we are interested in:

GREEN. Trees everywhere. Wildlife! Rivers, lakes, ocean, beaches, mountains, hiking trails, dog parks, shopping centers, co ops, farmers markets, metaphysical crystal stores, bead stores, book stores, library, jr college/state college, yoga, mma/boxing, art scenes, music venues, local eateries and bars, good 'ol coffee shops, Marijuana (hey, we're from Cali...that will never leave lol) fishing areas, museums, movies, camp sites, near points of interests, cabin/wilderness lifestyle, gardening, archery/hunting, tattoo shops, community volunteering

We're both artists (he plays professional metal music and I draw)
Along with our dogs Bear the Pit Bull and Wolf the German Shepherd, we are curious if WA has any 'land/acreage' areas. I've been training both my boys from day one and I would love to find some land to work them on.

How is the weather?
Whats the social life like per demographic?
What are the employment opportunities?
What is the best dog friendly nature points of interests?
We practice Shamanism, where can we find some love in that area?
Art scenes? Tattoo Shops? Music venues? College life?
Any schools you would recommend?
Our budget for rent is $1,000, is that doable?
What about the laws out there?
Dispensaries and marijuana? Do they have them like CA?
Vegetarian/raw lifestyle areas? Thanks!!!

Answer
The Olympia area sounds like you. Go there and poke around. If you want land, there is plenty of rural around there, to the south and west.

Marijuana has been decriminalized. Dispensaries will be open to all by the end of this year.

Almost no sun in the winter, but summer is spectacular. The forest is so dense you can't walk in much of it. Evergreen State Univ in Olympia has a very liberal reputation. So many questions!

I have twenty acres of forest for sale, remote but 20 miles from the ocean. Beautiful vista of just trees.

What are you waiting for?

How long will it take to drive from Nelspruit Airport to the Orpen Gate of Kruger National Park?

best camping site in kruger image

l00kt0thec

Answer
Nelspruit has an international airport now but its at Whiteriver which is much closer to Kruger so thats cool.

Why not enter the park at a Southern Gate and drive through the animals rather than the pot holed and somewhat dangerous roads on the outside??

Kruger gate or even closer Numbi Gate are real close to the airport.

You could then stay the night at Skukuza or any of the other rest camps in Kruger.

The public self catering sites are great, clean cheap and friendly.

A bit further to the South is Berg-en-dal, the south is where you ar emost likely to see Rhino.

I'm waffling the question was how long to Orpen 2 1/2 hours max speed 120km watch out for the cows and potholes though.

If you want to be really senic travel up to Sabie, take in the Blyde River canyon and Gods window and then go via Klasserie to Orpen.

Enjoy your stay

Any good safaris in Krugar National Park?

John Matri

I'm looking for some good programs or tours for krugar national park for me and a couple of friends. Or at least some general knowlege of where the best areas in the park are, as far as wildlife and scenery go.

Answer
The following is an example of a self drive itinerary and can easily be amended to suit your requirements.

Day 1: Johannesburg - Kruger National Park
Drive from Johannesburg to Kruger National Park following the N2 to Nelspruit (355 km) and then another 46km to Malelane. It will take you about 4.5 to 5 hours including a stop along the way. Please note the entrance and restcamp gates close at sunset (17h30 in winter) and you need to be in the camp before this time. The speed limit within the park is 50km / hour.

However, should you be delayed, you can use the late entry escorts (at the main gates) until 21h00 at a fee. Enter the Park at the Malelane Gate. You'll be requested to pay a daily conservation levy amounting to R120 / adult / day for foreign visitors.

Proceed to the Berg en Dal Restcamp (7km) and check-in at reception quoting your reservation number. Check in at you bungalow or chalet.

Rest of day at leisure until you do your first game drive at about 15h30. Follow the Rhino Trail in the Camp and view the eco-display in reception. Berg-en-Dal also has an Internet Café - should you wish to check your email.

Get a detailed map of the Kruger Park at the shop and to stock up on refreshments for the game drives. Plan your game drives from the map and check at Reception the list of the day's game sightings and locations.

Start you game drive about 2.5 hours before sunset. Follow the Jock of the Bushveld Route to Crocodile Bridge (42km) searching for the elusive creatures of the bush. Remember slow travel and regular stopping produces much more action than covering a lot of ground. There are so many creatures to see and sightings of rare species can be the highlight of your trip.

There are some very interesting rock art sites and en-route stop at one of the Bushman Paintings sites. Berg-en-Dal is the only camp set in a rugged mountain environment and is built on the site of a prehistoric settlement.

Return to camp before the gates close. Enjoy an early dinner at the Rhino Restaurant offering guests an âa la carteâ menu and for breakfast a full English Breakfast or a Continental Breakfast. The restaurant also has the option of light meals.

Retire early amidst the sound of Africa's nocturnal animals

Day 2: Berg en Dal
Rise early to leave camp when the gates open - from 04h30 in summer - for your first game drive of the day. Early mornings and evening time are usually the most productive game viewing periods. Remember to take a camera, binoculars, bird and wildlife reference books and map with.

Follow the circular route to Afsaal Tea Room. The Berg en Dal area hosts white rhino, kudu, impala, giraffe, elephant, reedbuck, klipspringer, grey rhebok and warthog. Leopard are seen regularly in the region - some lucky people have even seen them drinking at the dam in front of the camp. Wild dog are also found in the area. Lion are usually found in the lower plains on the roads to Skukuza and Crocodile Bridge.

Return to camp and spend the day at leisure before you depart on a Sunset Drive on an open safari vehicle. The drive departs 2 hours before gate closing time and expose you to the nocturnal activities of Kruger's secretive creatures. Experienced guides drive the groups and last for about 3 hours.

After the excitement of the drive return to camp for a late dinner.

Day 3: Satara
Depart Berg en Dal early morning for your next restcamp - Satara. Follow the H3 to Skukuza - for breakfast - and then via the H1-3 to Satara. En-route you'll find many opportunities to view game. At Tshokwane on the H1-3 approximately midway between Skukuza and Satara is a picnic spot with a small shop where you can stop. You'll also pass the most southerly Baobab Tree and some memorial sites.

Satara is situated in an area with the bush relatively open and the animals plentiful and diverse. The camp itself has a rustic charm, with the bulk of the accommodation set out in a series of circles. The camp is well wooded and the bird-life is prolific.

Satara is regarded as one of the best game viewing areas in the park and is particularly noted for the big cats, with lion, leopard and cheetah recorded regularly. General game includes blue wildebeest, zebra, waterbuck, giraffe and the ubiquitous impala. Rhino, buffalo and elephant are also easily seen.

Of the smaller animals, the honey badger is something to look out for. At night spotted hyena regularly whoop from the campâs perimeter while the repetitive sonar chink of fruit bats blends with the chirp of cicada and cricket. Satara, like other camps, has a plethora of resident birds

On arrival check-in at your bungalow or chalet and spend the rest of the day at leisure. Satara offers you an Eco Information Centre, Film Auditorium, the Nhuthwa Restaurant, a Cafeteria and a Shop.

Enjoy an early dinner before retiring for the day.

Day 4: Satara
Satara offers various routes around the camp with excellent opportunities to view a variety of wildlife on your early morning and late afternoon game drives. Plan your drives and consult the sightings map at Reception.

The N'wanedzi Picnic Site (24 km from Satara) provides a viewing platform with an elevated view down on the N'wanedzi River. About 2 km from N'wanedzi on the S37 Road the Sweni Bird Hide is well worth stopping at.

There is also a bird/game-viewing hide at Ratel Pan near the Timbavati Picnic Site and a picnic site at Muzandzeni.

The following are 5 "specials" to seek in the Satara area: Red-billed Buffalo Weaver, Lion, Giraffe, Blue Wildebeest and Honey Badger. During your game drives you are likely to see lion, zebra, waterbuck, giraffe, rhino, buffalo, elephant, impala and other buck.

Meals can be enjoyed at the Nhuthwa Restaurant.

Day 5: Pilgrims Rest

Leave the Kruger Park early the next morning via the Orpen Gate about 30 km from Satara. Proceed via the R531 towards Swadini and at the intersection with the road to Hoedspruit keep left towards the Abel Erasmus Pass and Echo Caves for your first stop.

At Echo Caves take the turn-off to Blyde River Canyon (R352). Visit theCanyon, Bourkes Luck Potholes and God's Window before proceeding to Graskop. From Graskop travel to Pilgrims Rest - the historic mining town.

Spend the remainder of the afternoon exploring the old town and its variety of curio shops. Overnight at the Royal Hotel

I have a very large back yard, and even with a riding lawn mower it takes a almost an hour to mow on a goood day. Since I'll be leaving for Marine boot camp soon, I want to plant some trees to cover space so its easier for my mom to take care of the yard. I recent found a place that will sell African Tulip Trees. They grow quickly, but I'm not sure if planting something refered to as an invasive species is a good idea. Does anyone have any in their yards that could tell me if its a good idea or not?

Answer
I have planted many over the years with out a problem of seeds germinating underneath. Its a beautiful tree, but it can drop alot of leaves. They are listed as an invasive species in Queensland and Sri Lanka, meaning you will not get approval to plant them if asking permission first. The seedlings are easy to spot and remove from the yard. Here is a link about it.

Does anyone know the location of apostlebirds. Do they live in Queensland?

Bagosh

Hi.
I am a studying photographer and I have always been interested in photography for wildlife. To be able to take great photos, I will need to set goals for capturing the wildlife. To start out I will need to know the whereabouts. I am currently trying to research about the Apostlebirds(Grey Jumper). Is there anyone that knows if these birds live in Queensland? Any other information about these birds would be helpful too. e.g. bait. Thankyou.

Answer
LOL... you don't need bait for apostle birds. They're not bothered by humans at all! We recently did a Qld outback trips and there were squillions of them at Carnarvon Gorge in the camp grounds. The staff at the Takaraka camp ground were also very knowledgeable about them. There were lots in the Gaske's fossicking area in Chinchilla. And at Mt Surprise in the north there was a little place that had snakes. The guy let my kids hold some of them, but when you put them on the ground the apostle birds would come down, stand in a circle around the snake and squawk away. Those are the 3 main encounters that stick in my head, they're everywhere out there though. If you're eating a sandwich, the birds will come. They're amazing little critters - good luck with the photography!

My family is looking to go camping this summer, again, we just got back from tent camping for a couple of days at McGrath State Beach in Ventura and it was actually really great! just a bit on the pricey side though.
I've seen the forest service camp site listings but a lot of their information is outdated and inaccurate. Do you guys have any suggestions, preferably in the SoCal area, details would be great! thanx in advance!

Answer
If you think McGrath is nice, try Carpinteria. You'll never go back. VERY family friendly, loads of fun, beach camping at it's finest.

El Capitan and Refugio are also nice. At this time of year, you'll have to check reservamerica every day to try to find a cancellation.

Note that Leo Carillo State PARK is not on the beach, but on the other side of PCH. I dislike Leo Carillo because the beach is too rocky.

Down South, Doheny is good.

Further south, San Clemente, San Elijo and South Carlsbad are OK, but you have to hike down those steps to get to the beach, then hike back up to get to your campsite on the bluffs. Pretty tiring.

Good luck!

Answer
Hi there, the safest place to camp is in Eden Nature Park, Davao City. It has an area which campers are very welcome to stay, tent ready also, it's a developed farm and very clean. It also has adventure areas and activities and the place is large enough to stroll, you could be mountain trailing there because it is well-designed like there are falls that you see while walking your way out from trailing. I suggest you see this site for sure information: www.edennaturepark.com.ph

You go to Eden Experience, then Adventure button, then Campsites.

I am looking for tips on camping in the Philippines.?

Philippine

I have camped in the USA. I have lots of camping gear. I have camped at 90 to 5 degrees Fahrenheit ( 32 to -15 Celsius )

Where are places to go camping in the Philippines? Are there any campgrounds in the Philippines?

Answer
I go camping myself. Since I was in grade school, as a boy scout.

However, I would suggest that you join a local group, like an organization of mountaineers or any travel club. These groups know where to camp, and camping as a group is always the way to go. In fact, I would advise you to NEVER camp alone, because strangers could just intrude into your tent.

The best camp sites are those in the mountains. Like at Mount Pulag, Mt. Apo, Mt Banahaw, and Mt. Makiling. The latter is in fact an official campsite of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines, and has hosted international jamborees.

You can also camp in beach areas, with permission from the resort owner. A camping charge is usually levied.
