best camping site on lake garda image

I'm planning on flying from Ireland to north Italy and hiring a campervan to travel round those 3 countries. I'm basically looking for loads of really good scenery and stuff to do for the 10 days. If anyone has suggestions I would very much appreciate it.

Hi There,
We made a similar trip in 2006, we drove to Dover in our VW Camper and caught the "cheap" ferry from Dover to Calais. and drove down the eastern border of France and Germany, very unspoilt and picturesk we sppent our first night in a place called Charesville, whice from memory was about 278 km from Calais. the second night we spent just south of Strasborg. Both these camp sites were municipal sights the dearest being 17 euros, very reasonable. we then crossed into Switzerland through a tunnel which brought us out in Bazel, this was a bit of a hole to be honest, we then travelled through Switzerland where it became more as you expect, very pretty although the weather wasn't great. We stayed just south of Zurich in a odd campsite in a huge valley on the edge of a lake with enormous mountains all around, most of which you couldn't see the top of due to the clouds, not being low but the mountains were just that high. I beleive the area was where Heidi was filmed in the 1970's. We then drove towards the Italian border through St. Moritz over some spectacular mountain passes. Our first destination in Italy was to be Lake Garda, after passing into Italy we drove passed Lake Como which was beautiful and then through northern Italy which was quite univentful really and the roads were much busier than in France and Switzerland. We had four nights in a camp site on the banks of Lake Garda for a well earned rest after all that driving. From there we fancied seeing the Tuscany so headed south again, unfortunately this was the Saturday that the whole of Italy went on holiday. We got struck in the most horendous traffic jams and ended up in a seaside resort just south of Pisa, not good! you couldn't se the sea as all the campsites along the coast had their own beaches and were fully booked, we stayed in possibly the worst camp site of the trip and most expensive, booked out first thing the next morning and headed for rural Tuscany and found a delightful campsite just south of Sienna, we could have stayed there for three weeks as a lot of Brits were doing. we'll go back one day. as it happens we had four marvolous nights there enjoying the area, the pool, the bar and pizzeria. and also the large football and beach volley ball courts for the kids. Then it was time to embark on our return trip. Not wishing to retrace our tracks we pointed the van towards Mont Blanc and set off on our longest single drive of the fourtnight but it was well worth it for an extra night in Tuscany. we camped on the slopes of Mont Blanc in a lovely alpine campsite and the following day set off through the Mont Blanc tunnel into Chamonai (not sure if that's how you spell it) and up through Dejon for one night and then up to Calais and stayed in the next best place to a refugee camp. A pretty naff camp site full of Brits and it rained. Hope this inspires you to do something similar. sorry rushed this a bit on my lunch hour.

lake garda family camping?
Kirsty Ran
We have an 8 yr old and two babies, and we want to go on a reasonably priced camping holiday in Lake Garda in August, organised by ourselves rather than a package,we have our own tent, transport etc. We want a friendly, child friendly campsite, where my 8 year old can make friends with other kids, can anyone recommend anything?
