I am looking for a canyon/mountain experience but bathrooms would be nice. Tent camping not roughing it or anything. Also, I don't want to be eaten by wolves or bears. Thanks.
I think I would like to camp at a campground but one in the mountains or canyon. Not so sure about camping in a totally primative area and get eaten by wolves and bears. Thanks.

KOA rocks, you can get a book with every site in the country and they're all over the place, I used the crap out of them through my 20's travelled all over the states. Good luck!

What are some cool places to see near salt lake city?

nick b

I will have 2 days to explore the area around Salt Lake City and was wondering if there are any cool national parks/camping areas near by? Zion and Bryce Canyon are a little far away so I was wondering if there was anything closer?

Answer
I loved Golden Spike National Historic Site in Promontory, Utah. It's the site where the two pieces of the transcontinental railroad came together. They have a little museum, replicas of two steam engines, and you can hike trails along the old railroad cuts. It's pretty cool. - - - Read Stephen Ambrose's book "Nothing Like It In the World" before you go and you'll appreciate the story behind the place even more.

I'm referring to the scene where Harry and Hermione are camped atop a cliff. The ground surface is extremely cracked. As a geology student, I'm interested if this is a real location.

Presumably, the location is meant to be somewhere in the UK (though I guess it could've been shot somewhere else). Even if this was some sort of set, is there a place in the UK with this geological makeup?

Answer
It is limestone pavement at Malham Cove, North Yorkshire, England.

What are some good eduactional or adventurous camps that are free?

Sexcii Mam

Just looking for a place to have fun in the summer and is low cost or the money comes from fund raising and donations. Please help and no negative comments.

Answer
I have no idea where you are, but if you were in UK I would suggest going to Sherwood forest, and takling a history book with you. There are information huts there, and the whole place is historical for the Robin Hood legend, you can make your own camp, go hiking, and pretend to be a part of the merry men.

If you are in USA, why not pick a story from history that you like and go to the local place where it is set- without knowing where you are it's a bit hard.

Advise on buying a tent?

I know theres not too much of Summer left, We're in Northeast Ohio. We did out first family camping trip the other week, and cant wait for more. We used my sisters tent and supplies basicly. Should we continue useing hers, which isnt a problem. Tent could be bigger but we manage. Our should we buy on now, or next year. I like the tents with a screen patio and found on in the Kmart flyer. What do you all think?
http://kmart.shoplocal.com/kmart/Default.aspx?action=browsepagedetail&storeid=2422215&rapid=430829&listingid=-2092975161&pretailerid=-99572
Is that a good tent, brand?
We have two kids so the large tent that can have a wall like this is perfect I thought.
Thanxs!

Answer
I checked out this tent through your link. I would purchase this tent at that price. Looks to be a good starter tent. Even if you decide you don't like it you have not invested to much. Also note that for summer camping you can piece together a great set in relatively short time buying a cooler, propane or kerosene style lanterns, stove, chairs and sleeping bags say every other payday. I would not trust this tent to sleep more than 4 though. After years of camping through 3 seasons I have found that an air mattresses gives me much better sleep at nights and it uses more space as well. You can pay a fortune for a great tent, but to get started this looks fine. Have fun with it.

TENT HELP!!!! good quality low cost?

abby

We are planning a camping trip in july, and well i was wonding if we need to spend $100 plus bucks, or can we get a way with $40 at walmart?.... Whats the difference and do we really need to pay that much?...

Answer
No you don't need to spend that much for good quality. Coleman Tents makes good quality tents for less then $100. the bigger the tent the higher the price of course they make a 9x7 tent that will fit a family of 4 for $79.us
http://www.coleman.com/coleman/colemancom/detail.asp?product_id=2000001975&categoryid=11020&brand=

It has a stay dry guarantee and is built to last I have had mine for 5+ years now and it's still as good as the day I bought it and I use it for Boy scouts now that tells how well there made. You can spend less their two man Sundome is $49.us. So depending on the size you need is the price you pay. And you can get these at Walmart or Kmart and Sears.

How can I find places to camp besides campgrounds?

Keef

I dont wanna be around a ton of people, or have to pay for a designated area to be limited to camp in. How do I find places where camping is aloud but its not a business type campground, jus camping in the wild basically?

East coast (DE, PA, VA, WV, area)

Answer
Check with your area National Forest Service and find out where the National Forest is for your state. (There may be more than one.) When you have found those closest to your immediate area, or near the area where you expect to be driving through, you have only to pick and choose from the best sites that offer the kind of environment that you prefer for your campsite. You should be able to find countless opportunities and locations to please even your most demanding expectations. To be sure you are following the rules and regulations pertaining your particular National Forest, ask your regional office to inform you of where your nearest source for the pamphlets containing all rules, regulations, and other advice can be found. They are provided free of charge and will answer all questions you may have on the subject. They will almost always have detailed maps which can also include campsites and other important features such as historic points of interest, natural phenomenon, wildlife sanctuaries & preserves, ranger stations, fire lookouts, lakes and streams with boat launching facilities, F.S. cabins for rent, etc. Most of the many National Forests in which I have enjoyed staying have a 14+ day limit as to how long you can camp in one spot. However, many of them allow you to move on down the road and set up a new camp and start the time period over again. Over-all, it is a great program and you can learn quickly and easily how to make it work to your complete satisfaction. Go for it, and have a GREAT time in the Great Outdoors.

Some friends and I are just looking for a place to camp for a night in the outdoors. Somewhere secluded and surrounded by trees would be nice. it doesn't have to be a legit camp site if you know off a place for enough out of the way to just set up a tent that would be cool too.

Answer
Check the websites for the US Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and your state parks department. Look for areas where dispersed camping is allowed. With it being summer time, you may not be able to go into certain areas or burn an open fire. So be sure to get the 411 on the laws. Good luck and have fun.

Free Camping Spots in the White Mountains of New Hampshire?

Cam

So I camped a few times for free on this dirt road that led to the trail head of a 4000 footer in the white mountains that had at several areas used for camping. These were all free, and it was first come first serve. Only a fire pit and a stream behind the site. It was completely in the middle of nowhere, which was the best part. I was wondering if anybody knows any more of these backwoods camping sites that are completely secluded, free, and are basically an open space. I love camping in the White Mountains and would love to explore different areas! Thanks fellas

Answer
The spot you are talking about is a a pay-to-camp area. But nobody checks it. Honor system. And there are plenty more like that all around the area.

Q. I am planning a big adventure in scotland for at least 2 months, wild camping, surviving of the land.

My main worry are ticks, how do i prevent from getting attacked, will they attack me in my tent, while walking on flat grass? just need abit of info on this subject please thanks guys.

Answer
Are you referring to the Great Scottish Midge? Midgeus Bitteus Extremis var Scotii?
First, stay away from water...lochs,rivers and streams, swampy marshy claddaghs, etc.
Second, go outside only when there is a high wind. Midges can't fly in that so they hide away all cozy where they can breathe.
Second and a half, only go out in bright light, preferably Glorious Scottish Sunshine cos the blighters really like evenings and nights better than bright stuff because all blood-sucking vampires do that anyway....it's only natural.
Third, buy a midge net or three to cover the places like faces that normal clothing doesn't cover
Fourth, buy Deet or similar sprays and spray everything but it's harmful on skin so take care.
Also Fourth, buy a big pack of mosquito coils, commonly called Elephant coils which you wouldn't know quite likely cos they're mostly commonly called that in Malaysia and Singapore cos the major brand of them there is 'Elephant Brand' and fishing by a river without them in the evening is a soddin' nightmare....
When you sit down for a rest or a go at the Glorious Scottish Rainbow Trout and Salmon beside a beautiful Scottish loch or river in the evening, light a couple of coils and they'll smoulder away for six hours or so unless you got cheapies which last an hour if you're lucky, and the fumes will deter midgy stuff and most other small flying things.
If you want to put one out....extinguish it, not put it out by the back door out of the way cos you won't have one there unless you've got a really posh tent....just break the smouldering end off.
Fifth, buy a sleeping bag with legs and arms and keep it on continuously with a well fitted crash helmet with a full visor, a thick scarf wrapped round your neck to seal the gap, and thick leather gloves on your hands, trousers tucked into the outer pair of socks and the join covered with well fitted gaiters, and go in winter so you stay cool enough.
Just don't drink anything. It's a bit inconvenient that way.....and later on.

If you mean ticks as in grass type ticks that live on grass, well that's one reason for the traditional arrangement of socks and boots used by walkers on the hills and far away.
Cover all exposed skin when walking in long grass and get the wrists and neck sealed well.
Wear short thick woolen socks over long 60% cotton 35% wool 5% Elastane or similar walking socks.
Roll the short woolen socks over the top of your boots to seal the gap.
Tuck the trousers neatly into the long socks, one bit of trouser each side so there are two pleats evenly spaced, one on each side, not one one side and none the other side which looks totally stupid.
Put on a pair of lightweight or heavyweight hopefully breathable waterproof gaitors for added protection.
All sealed up and tick-proofed. Jumping spider proofed. Snake bite proofed for desert and jungle walkies.
Wind proofed and even wet water splash proofed for jumping over streams and tramping through deep puddles but they won't save you from sinking up to your neck into black holes on Rannoch so take care.
Good at what they do though.
Proper professional job. Turn up to a village rambling club and watch the horrified faces.
Oh nooooo....a real one...what on Earth will he think of us.....oohh,grief.
It's happened....quite a few times...hahahaha

If you meet a wild haggis in full battle regalia it's fair game.....use anything at hand.
You'll need it.
All the others cannot be shot on a Sunday and must be treated as honorary guests at the dining table.
Have a great time.

Was the Vietnamese refugee camp in Pulau Besar or in Pulau Tengah?

Minja

As a child, my family was in the Vietnames refugee camp during 1978-79. I always remembered it to be Pulau Besar but based on recent Google searches, I now have some doubt that it might have been Pulau Tengah. Does anyone know for sure?

I would like to revisit that beautiful island. Has anyone been there?

It definitely wasn't Pulau Bidong, which became a much larger Refugee camp soon after I arrived at Besar/Tengah. My father escaped later from Vietnam and he was housed at Bidong.

are you allowed to camp on sandbanks beach, England?

inky

if not could you please tell me some beaches around that area, in the south, where you can camp...

Answer
I can not locate confirmation of it. But I feel sure that a beach is crown property and like common land any one can pitch a tent after nightfall, so long as they take it down before daylight.

You must leave the site as found and cannot build a fire.

Perhaps some one knows where I have made the mistake with this 'old law'. It is very many years since I studied that sort of thing.

What is the best place to camp in Adirondacks NY?

yellowstone camping best place on ... available in order to accentuate the natural essence of Yellowstone
yellowstone camping best place image

Lost007

Hi

What's the best place to camp in the adirondacks NY and close to the nyc? Camp site that has decent hiking trails, water fall, or maybe rafting and fun things to do.

Answer
Do you know that the Adirondacks is the largest National Park in the US, bigger than Yellowstone and Yosemite combined? There are hundreds of camping areas, dozens of lakes and waterways and thousands of miles of trails. There is no "best" place to camp, almost every area is great in some way. If you want to be as close to New York City as possible, and it sounds like you want outfitter provided experiences like rafting and car-camping tent sites, I suggest you look on line at commercial campgrounds around the Lake George and Glens Falls areas, less than an hour north of Albany. These sites will have photos and descriptions of the resources and scenery in those areas.

http://www.adirondackcampgrounds.com
http://www.lakegeorge.com/camping/

Because August is a peak month for camping in the 'Dacks, it would be best if you made sure you had a reservation at any campsite before heading up there -- don't count on being able to just drop in wherever you want this time of year.

Which of these places in america would you rather live in and why?

.:Riku's h

Which of these places would you like to live in the most?
Casper, Wyoming
Denver, Colorado
Rapid City, South Dakota
Cheyenne, Wyoming
Lincoln, Nebraska
Salt Lake City, Utah
Boise, Idaho

Do you live in any of these places? If so, what's it like?

Answer
Casper WY No! There is nothing going on there and WY can get very windy. Small time hick town.

Denver CO No! Live about an hour north and I prefer to stay away from there. Denver has no personality and there is nothing to do there.

Rapid City SD Yes! Actually I would love to live in Deadwood or Keystone. Both places are pretty close to Rapid City. In the area there is Mount Rushmore, Badlands, Devils Tower, Wind Caves, Custer State Park, and many places to camp. It is very green there too and not too much humidity.

Cheyenne WY No! Live about 45 minutes south and there is nothing to do there except to see the capitol building, Sierra Trading Post and the brewery. Also, like I said before WY can get very windy and this too is a small hick town.

Lincoln NE No! No! No! Too hot and humid and boring.

Salt Lake City UT No! Have you been here? I have and it sucks. The suburbs aren't much better, trust me. Dry and dirty and I will leave it at that.

Boise ID. I do not have an opinion on this place because I haven't been in a long time. I would definately visit though to see what it is like. The saving grace of Boise ID is that it is close to Yellowstone WY and Jackson Hole WY.

That's all I have to say about that!

Have you considered Juneau or Anchorage AK?

J

I want to travel across Europe or the pacific islands and volunteer In exchange for living and possibly explore different places. I'm hoping to maybe even make a little money to do touristy things as well. I'm a student in the US.

Answer
It's illegal for you to work in Europe without first obtaining a visa that allows you to live and work there unless you are a European citizen. Work visas are applicable only to a single country and not to the whole of Europe. If you were a Canadian citizen, you could get a working vacation visa which would allow you to live in a country and do limited work, but those are for a stay of more than 90 days in a single country.

Right now, the overall unemployment rate in Italy is around 12% and it's around 37% for young people. In Spain and Greece, the unemployment rate is 27% overall and much higher for young people. In Portugal, the unemployment rate is 18% and France is seeing record high numbers of unemployed people. In the UK, the unemployment rate is 7.8%, but at least the number of jobless fell in June. Sweden is a lkittle higher. The lowest unemployment rates are in Germany, Austria, Denmark and Norway. The possibility of getting a job even if you had a visa are currently poor.

You're better off saving up for your trip and planning on getting around on that. Prices depend on exactly where you're starting from, when you go (prices vary a lot), how long you stay, where you go in Europe, how you get around, the kind of places you stay in and what you see/do/eat. People who backpack generally can get by for $100 per day staying in cheap hostels and carefully watching their budget (not including airfare). However, if you stay in hotels, it will cost you more. I usually spend 100 to 150 euro a night for a hotel just for myself, but there are cheaper places.

Here are some resources that can help you plan and check options and current prices for your trip (expect prices in the future to rise):

http://www.kayak.com/ - airfares & hotels; the explore function is useful for finding the less expensive places to fly into from your starting point.

http://www.skyscanner.it/ - particularly good for budget flights within Europe, but you can also use everywhere as a destination to do something like the explore option on Kayak. You may not need the airfares, but you can compare to the cost of the trains to get around. this one may be more useful for you.

http://www.seat61.com/ - a great train site with details about railpasses. It can be cheaper to buy individual tickets than passes. This site will tell you how to determine whether you're better off with a railpass or individual tickets or some combination for your trip. It also details how to use the pass and what to avoid to get the best use out of a pass. Most high speed, international and night trains require reservations and will require you to pay a supplement when you use a railpass. You need to be aware that a railpass is almost always more expensive for trains here in some places like Italy and Spain.

http://www.trenitalia.com/cms/v/index.js⦠- Italian train schedules & prices. You can find links to the various national train sites on the Man in Seat 61 site above.

http://www.venere.com/ - hotels/B&Bs - prices for the same hotel can vary hugely depending on the season and what local events are going on.

http://www.hostelbookers.com/ - hostels.

http://www.monasterystays.com/ - monasteries & convents that offer accommodations

You can also look into camping or couch surfing as cheaper alternatives for accommodations.

http://www.whatsonwhen.com/sisp/index.ht⦠- festivals, exhibitions and events

http://www.backpackeurope.com/ - information & advice

For sightseeing prices: check the websites for entrance fees for the museums & galleries you're interested in. I spend anywhere between nothing and 40 euro a day depending on exactly what I go to see when out exploring. For food, I spend around 25 to 50 euro for a meal, but you can eat for less. A pizza is 8 to 13 euro and a panino or wrap is around 3 to 6.50 euro in many places. You can often get food at festivals at a relatively low price. You can also shop in the markets and put some meals together for yourselves. When I travel, I like to try the local specialties and the good restaurants.

best places for wild camping in sweden?

Hi. I am planning a wild camping to beautiful sweden in the summer and am looking for any advice on the best places and any festivals or anything that would be good to take in. The time im going isnt decided yet. It will porb be the middle of summer.

Answer
My favourite is the northern part of Kungsleden (the king's way) in Lappland. The route from Abisko - Kebnekaise (highest mountain in Sweden) - Nikkaluokta - Kiruna.

It has a wonderful landscape, many stations on the way where you can buy food and other stuff (so you don't have to carry so much) and can be done in a week (including some days off to enjoy the nature).
I recommend the way over Unna Allakasstugorna. There not as many people go as the other way directly to Alesjaurestugan.
You can also head for Narvik from there.

Unfortunately it's also the most walked part of Kungsleden, so you will meet many people there (for walking in nature). But it's also interesting, as they come from all over the world.

Best maps are the 'Gröna Kartan' (1:50.000)

Start and finishing point can be very easily reached by train from Stockholm or Göteborg.

I try to google "Go camps" or "places to learn Go" and stuff that are the same but every time I do it comes up with something that is obviously not the Japanese oriental board game Go. Please help find some places nearby OKC (Oklahoma City) to learn this mind-stimulating game!

Answer
Well, online resources are easier to find than live clubs, but here's some links you may find useful.

Promote Go lists clubs in many locations. For Okla City they list the Oklahoma Go Players Association.
Their website link is no longer current, but it can't hurt to try the e-mail or phone number. Even if the group died, you might find someone to play.
http://promotego.org/locations/oklahoma-go-players-assoication

There are other groups listed elsewhere in Oklahoma.
http://promotego.org/search/go-clubs/radius?address=oklahoma&radius=25&commit=Go!

Online resources:

This is the best online tutorial to learn the game! It's completely interactive, and will get you started.
http://www.playgo.to/index-e.html

KGS has a beginner room where you can find people to play online or teaching games. (Do the tutorial website first, if you don't know how to play at all, or they'll just send you there.)
http://www.gokgs.com/

If you are a kid, you can ask questions and find resources at Tiger's Mouth, the American Go Foundation's kids' website.
http://tigersmouth.org

If you're NOT a kid, Life in 19x19 has a forum with a beginners' section where people are happy to answer your questions, probably in much greater length and detail than you wanted. :D

Some friends and I are planning a trip to California, I am a sucker for Southern CA, but two of my guys friends are trying to convince me that we should go to Northern CA near Campbell, San Jose, Saratoga and San Francisco. What is there to do there? I mean, clearly there is San Francisco, but in specific what is there to do there?

Answer
San Francisco is the most beautiful city I have ever seen. You can enjoy walking the various ethnic neighborhoods, Little Italy and Chinatown being the most picturesque. The Golden Gate is awesome. For me, the real attractions of the area are just outside of SF. Take a drive along Highway 1 in Marin County. See the giant Redwood trees. Lots of terrific places for hiking and camping. Touring the wineries of Napa County is also a lot of fun. In the San Jose area, I recommend going to Palo Alto and touring Stanford University. It is the most beautiful university campus in the world, in my opinion.

What are some good places to tent/car camp within 3 hour drive from San Jose, CA?

Uncle Penn

Seems like every time I go camping, it's always the same no matter where I go. Very dry and brown. Dirt. Slimy or dirty lake.

Maybe this time some place with green grass, nice trees, and a nice lake or river to play in.

Answer
- Big Basin, it's in the Santa Cruz mountains.
- Big Sur, beautiful drive down HWY 1 and you'll also be able to support the regrowth of the area after the fires last summer. Big Sur has amazing hiking, beaches, waterfalls and near Carmel is "the greatest meeting of land and sea", Point Lobos.
- The Pinnacles National Monument (East Side) has a swimming pool and amazing caves to explore.
- Sunset / Manresa beach near Watsonville

All of the above mentioned places are within 2 hours or less of San Jose. Big Basin is about 40 minutes, Big Sur is about 1.5 hours, and Pinnacles is just past Hollister.

Call all of these places beforehand and you will be able to reserve a site and learn about what trails are open.

Specifics: Looking for info on Bond Canyon, history of Alto Camp, folks who lived in the area, schools, Alto Cemetery, and Josiah and Minnie Bond. Minnie was killed by lightning on 9/1/22. Her husband, Josiah was a mine egineer. Also looking for info on the Alto Camp Post Office and General Store that was supposedly owned by Josiah and Minnie. Any offspring of them would be nice to find.

Answer
I have done some historical research on other mining activities in that area and can give you a few places to look for more details:

The mining camp of Alto was located in Santa Cruz county on the southwest slope of the Santa Rita Mountains south of Tucson. Just to the south was the larger and better known mining camp of Salero, so you may want to look for info on Salero as well. The entire area was considered part of the Tyndall Mining District. The district was worked back in the Spanish period (1700s) and was a small producer of lead, gold, and silver until the 1960s.

There are several good books on Arizona ghost towns including Phil Varney's "Arizona Ghost Towns and Mining Camps" and James Sherman's "Ghost Towns of Arizona". The entry for Alto on the website that another poster lists above is pretty much copied exactly from Varney's book (with out giving credit, I might add). As you can read, it only gives a brief background on the camp.

The most detailed account of the mining activities in that area is in the book "History of Mining in Arizona, Vol 3" (various authors). In Chapter 3, "The Patagonia Area Mining Districts, Santa Cruz County, Arizona, 1536-1930", Robert Lenon gives a detailed description of the various mining companies and owners. He specifically mentions Josiah Bond as well as George Clark, Jens Peterson, Albert Steinfeld, Mark Lulley, Mike Hogan and Herb McCutchin as operating mines in the area after 1911. It refers to an 'Alto Mines Co.' that combined the 'Alto' and 'Wandering Jew' mine claims (Lulley referred to himself as the 'wandering jew').

Another good resource is the booklet, "Index of Mining Properties in Santa Cruz County, Arizona" by the Arizona Bureau of Mines. For the Alto Mine Group, it also lists Bond as an owner and notes that the mine produced 3,500 tons of ore averaging 12% lead, 14oz silver per ton and 3% copper in an ore body of quartz-barite fissure veins running through Creataceous rhyodacite and Jurassic granite. Despite its long life-span, the mine was a usually a comparative small-time operation.

The book "Arizona Post Offices" by Patera and Gallagher notes that the Alto post office was established on June 6, 1912 and discontinued on Dec 30, 1933.

Depending on how much detail you want, here are some other sources of info you should check:

Arizona Historical Society Archives (Tucson, near UofA) - Many people and companies donated their papers and records there.

University of Arizona Library, Special Collections - Also a good source of documents and records. I seem to recall at least one collect there that had a lot of info on the nearby Aztec mines group.

United States Census - If they lived there at a decade mark (1910, 1920) than you should be able to find them listed in the census. This would give their age, income, occupation and other useful information. These can usually be found on microfiche at major libraries.

Local Newspapers - The Arizona Historical Society has archives of many old AZ papers. The Tucson papers (Citizen and Star) often carried mining news and probably would have noted somebody being killed by lightening.

Arizona Department of Mines and Mineral Resources (Phoenix) - They usually keep a folder with a lot of good ownership and operations information on each major mining claim in AZ.

Arizona Corporation Commission (Phoenix) - If they incorporated a company in Arizona (especially after statehood in 1912) than there is a good chance that the company papers would still be on file (including owners and funding).

The people at the Arizona Historical Society or Arizona Department of Mines and Mineral Resources could probably give you other leads.

Where is a great secluded place for camping in Arizona?

I'm trying to find a place in the mountains to get away from the summer heat, to be near a lake or river so I can fish (preferably have the fishing area right by or in my campsite), and where I would hardly see any other people?

Somewhere in the White mountains or near the Mogollon Rim would be ideal.

Answer
And so is everybody else. That is a big issue in az where 90% of the state is dry hot desert. There will be folks anywhere you go wanting the same escape. Of the places I enjoyed the Mongollon rim is my top choice and the Christopher creek area was the most quiet. As for a lake or two woods canyon lake and willow springs lake are as quiet a place you can find.

Good Luck

I am leading a youth group camping trip this summer and I'm looking for a very large tent to accommodate optimally 15-16 people? I have looked at several 12 person tents (Gettysburg 12 Family Camping Tunnel Tent, Trekker⢠20' x 16' Cabin Tent and the Copper Canyon 12), but was hoping for something maybe a bit bigger.

Positive reviews about waterproofing is also a must. Our tents last year leaked horribly in the rain, even with the rain fly on and tarp underneath.

Answer
How much money do you have, how big do you need to go?
http://armytents.com/tents/tent-tmpr.html

As far as managing a group several smaller tents would be more suitable, you can arrange the tents around a central canopy for example like the circling of the wagon trains of old. this works best with vertical wall tents of the cabin styles like the Copper Canyon 12 or the Coleman Instant 8. Figure also gear for each camper unless they are on a cot each person will have gear that takes up sleeping space so figure 1 extra space for 3 persons is needed so a four man tent actually comfortably sleeps three, an eight man sleeps 6 and so on.

Personally as having been there done that thousands of times as a scoutmaster, The Coleman Tent family has the best reputation for staying dry in and not breaking the bank, so I highly recommend them.

Just bought a brand new jeep wrangler and I would love to take it to the beach... but what beaches near the Los Angeles area allow you to drive on the beach?

Answer
Yeah I used to work at Dockweiler Beach and I'm sorry to tell you that no, you cannot drive it on the beach.....
I actually just bought a brand new wrangler too and want to take it to the beach.
The only place I've been to, where you can actually ride on the sand is at Pismo Beach near San Luis Obispo.
It's far but it's so much fun.... they are big sand dunes, you can camp on the beach over night... it's great for a weekend.
That's the closest to LA.....

Any good places to go camping with family, near a beach or lake? That allow bonfire?

My family and I are traveling to PEI this Summer and we want to know the best places to camp. We are from Toronto, Ontario. We have been to Algonquin Park every year since 2004 and I must say, it is the best camping place and we decided to try something new. So what are the best places to camp in PEI. Is there any good camping near Toronto?

anita

I just moved to Toronto and i wanted to set up a camping trip, i don't want to have to drive more then 2 hours from Toronto and i wanted to rent a cabin anyone have suggestions for a place that's decently priced (we're only going to be there for a few days ) It can be in a camp ground I do have a 3 year old so if its family oriented that would be lovely!

Answer
thankfully, toronto is next to a whole lot of great outdoors and has memorable camping places. Now, if you could drive about 3 or 4 hours, then i'd say that you should definitely check out algonquin provincial park. But i understand that you can only drive only 2 hours and with a 3 year old with you, it really can be hard to travel to far places. Try getting a cabin near orillia which is a city about 1 and and a half north or toronto or barrie which is only 1 hour away. The region around lake simcoe is great for fishing and its scenery and also it is a great place for families to visit. Here it is on a map:

The kawartha lakes is also a nice place to find a cabin for rent. The lakes are very calm and nice. The region is shown here

You should also ask some neighbors and friend ansd they can tell you about some other places too.
