What is your favourite capital city in Australia?

Seanis777

Please do not be biased and just say the one you currently live in, although you can by all means (ie you may live in Sydney for work, but like Darwin better for example). Please state good reasons, ie cultural, social, climate, economic etc.

Answer
Brisbane - its a huge city but so layed back and the people are so nice!

Usually warm weather - hardly never cold - so good for those who love the warm weather.

Its in the middle of fabulous places you can go visit on weekends. 30 mins from the Gold Coast which has its theme parks - you can entertain your kids/teens or yourself every weekend of the year if you have a season pass! Gorgeous beaches. And the National Parks.

You have great markets and shops - weekends for the city and markets at Manly and some other places as well for a little longer drive.

Then you have the Sunshine Coast about 1hr or more north (Depending where in Brisbane you are) with all its attractions! A few parks oe Australia Zoo or Underwater world. Gorgeous beaches. Foresty areas for camping which are gorgeous.

Then you can go west and do things about 30-40min west - such as a country picnic or visit a lavender farm. Or see some gorgeous waterfalls and or do bush walking. Or visit Toowoomba especially during their gardening show week/weeks and or see and visit the sites of Toowoomba.

So really it offers the best of all worlds as its right in the middle of everything!

Brisbane city itself has a man made beach if you dont want to drive 30min to the Gold Coast. Maybe 40min for those on the north? not sure but from South Brisbane its 35min.

Brisbane Southbank also has the museum, art gallery etc and or you can pop over to Roma St Parklands or the City Botanical Gardens or Mt Cootha and see the Botanic Gardens there and the lookout.

Theres lots of independent great bands in and around the city playing most nights and weekends. Lots of artistic things happening in and around the city. Especially at the Power House.

Brisbane city night life is safer than other places. Theres the Casino.

But I would say the nice people win it more than anything else and the layed back attitude!

My size is really hard to find, 30D, and I need some new bras before I leave for camp in a week. Victoria's Secret doesn't carry any band sizes below 32, and I had no luck at Nordstom. Any ideas about places online I could go looking?

Is it safe to visit the Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwe side? If so where should I stay, luxury & standard?

James H

Planning a vacation to South Africa, already visiting Cape Town and the Western Cape. Would love to end the trip at Victoria Falls just need tips on safety and where to stay.

Answer
I visited the Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwean side just a month ago. It was quite safe provided that you don't go walk abouts on your own and do not openly display your camera, bags etc. Keep your wallet/ cash in a safe place.
Whatever you do, don't walk around after dark. Don't fall for any money changing scams or offers to show you around by strangers. There are quite a few luxury hotels of which I found the best to be The Kingdom. The Elephant Hills is also very nice and has been rebuilt a few years ago after a fire almost destroyed it completely. Good standard accommodation can be found at numerous safari camps around the town, one being Tatenda Safaris which offers sunset booze cruises along the Zambezi River, tours to the local crocodile farm and others. You will be required to produce your passport to view the Falls and if you do not have a Zimbabwean passport you will have to pay your entry fee in US$ so be prepared for that. The hotels also charge for the accommodation in forex. Good luck and I sincerely hope that you will enjoy the trip and be safe.

I need ideas for holiday locations. Here is a bit about me:
I work as a Vet in Bath. I have three children: 13 year old Maddie, 11 year old Patrick and 8 year old Georgia. We all need a holiday, ideally in a static caravan near the coast. We love Pembrokeshire in Wales and Dorset because they aren't too far from our home near Bath. We've never tried Cornwall because of the holidaymakers and tourists there. Where else in the Uk (preferably South West) has good caravan/ camping sites? Ideally within 3 or 4 hours at a push from Bath. Are dogs allowed on the site as we have a springer spaniel? Thanks

Answer
I can vouch for Quay West holiday park in South Wales and the surrounding areas, we had a fab holiday las year on the Haven site and some of the lesser grade caravans allow dogs, if you can't take your dog there I noticed lots of other sites around and about that area.

Searcing for uk campsites in the south-please help?

ANGELA S

We are keen campers in the uk and are searching for a site with close proximity to a pub.
A sheltered fairly peaceful site would suit also allowing BBQs or campfires
Also prefer a dog free site if possible
Thanks so much is a definate maybe

Answer
Personally I can really recommend a beautiful campsite in Dorset at Hook Farm in the village of Uplyme about 30 mins scenic walk from Lyme Regis. Don't have the number to hand but if you stick these details into the web browser it'll come up.
It is set in the valley with stunning views and there is nice freindly little pub about 5 minutes walk tops from the site! Pub food is really good and they also do a carvery on Sundays. We love it there so much we've camped there a few times and may well be back there this summer. BBQs are allowed but you need to make sure you use put it on the bricks they provide - which is fine. Unfortunately fires aren't allowed but we find our bucket bbq provides a great heat source too!

Who were living in Palestine before 1948 and where are they now?

CuteMe

between 1900-1948 and even before who were living in whats known now state of israel and how they are living now ?

I heard that almost a complete cleansing of exisitng population was carried out and a new population brought from allover the world to live in their places ?!
Is that true?

Answer
In 1900 about 6% of the people were European Jews, about 10% were Palestinian Christians (Arabs), most of the rest were Palestinian Muslims (Arabs), with a few smaller sects such as Samaritans and Druze.

By the end of 1947, about 1/3 of the people were European Jewish immigrants. These people were Zionists or had come at the behest of Zionists, some fleeing the german nazis.

It should be noted that the Zionist immigrants had a plan to take over Palestine from the native people, that is, the Palestinian Arabs, and expel them by one means or another. They had the help of the British, who ruled Palestine after WWI, in their colonization project. The British helped them set up militias and institutions and also brutally suppressed objections by the native people to having their land taken over.

In 1947, the British empire was collapsing and they turned the matter over to the UN which recommended partitioning Palestine into Jewish and Arab states, giving the majority of territory for the Jewish state. The Zionists used the oppurtunity to conduct a campaign of terror and massacres to get rid of most of the people. Those people are known today as Palestinians - without the Zionist campaign they would have been the majority in what's now Israel in 1948.

Today, the Palestinians are scattered throughout the world, some still in refugee camps. The main part live close to their original homeland: about 1 million refugees live in Gaza, another 3/4 million in the West Bank, 2 million in Jordan, 400,000 in Lebanon, another 450,000 in Syria.

Many Palestinians managed to stay in their homes. About 1.2 live in Israel, however, many of these are "internally displaced," meaning, they were expelled from their homes but still lived in Israel and thus became citizens. About 3 million Palestinians live in the West Bank and maybe 500,000 Palestinians are native to Gaza, i.e. their families originated there.

What is the controversy with Israel and Palestine?

Dream Thea

I've heard read many different things about the countries and have no idea what's
happening with those countries. I really don't know because I don't watch the news much and I doubt it would be on America news since TV in America is so monitered and biased. Also what is the United State's relationship with Israel? So can someone give me a complete UNBIASED and NEUTRAL explanation.
Thank You.

Answer
Palestinians (Jews & Christians & Muslims ) lived in harmony as Arabs until some of the European Jews tried to immigrate to Palestine at the end of the 18 Century. The Jews were minority in Palestine. The whole Arab country was at that time under the occupation of the Ottoman Empire(Turkey) for the last 400 years. The Jews were trying to find a place to establish Israel in.

Places were offered, and places discuseed:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proposals_fâ¦

The Jews tried to buy Palestine from the Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid II who did not accept and in 1901 he sent a historical letter to Dr. Herzl informing him that he can not sell any small piece of Palestine to the Jews ( not even a handâs size of land). One of the reasons that made Arabs rebel against the Ottoman Empire was the crimes against Arabs by the Ottoman ruler Jamal Basha as al-Saffah, "the Blood Shedder" . Arabs repelled against the Ottomans in what was called the Great Arab Revolution. Great Britain promised the Arabs to help them to re-establish their one Arab country again if they help them in fighting the Ottomans and the Arabs bravely did and the Ottomans were defeated. But, upon defeating the Ottomans the British and the French occupied the Arab land instead of the Ottomans and this was a big surprise for the Arabs and a start point of new era of Arabian struggle . Then, Great Britain and France divided the Arab country through the SykesâPicot Agreement in 1916.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sykes%E2%80â¦

In which they secretly divided the Arab country into small states such as Syria, Lebanon, ...etc .

Great Britain directly after that gave the Jews the Balfour Declaration in 1917.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balfour_Decâ¦

In which Great Britain promised the Jews to establish Israel for them in Palestine.

The UN was founded in 1945 after World War II. Which was under the full control of the same countries that they divided the Arab big country into small states and /or supported the Jews against Arabs all the way no matter what. Arabs felt that what was happening was unjust and a big conspiracy against them.

How would you feel if some strangers just showed up and wanted to kick you out of your home by force ? claiming that their ancestors were in this spot 3000-4000 years ago. Would you say âOK â and just leave the home you and your ancestors have been living in for thousands of years? .

After WW2 and the Holocaust by the racist Hitler of Germany Jews immigrated in very large numbers to Palestine and used extreme force against the Palestinians who lived in Palestine for thousands of years. As a result Palestinians were expelled from their cities, farms and homes to the neighboring countries and elsewhere . Where millions of Palestinians are still living for over 60 years in the neighboring Arab states refugees camps in many cases in non humane conditions. So poor that they have nothing to eat or dress, no health, no education, no social security number, they are not allowed to buy a property or work, ........ etc. All that Palestinianâs suffering is because some strangers decided to invade Palestine.

Arab generations understand that Palestine was stolen from Arabs by:

1-Biased, unlawful and unjust UN conspiracy resolution/s.
2-By extreme force.

Conclusion:

1-400 years of the Ottoman occupation to the Arab country( since 1512 ) where the ottoman empire was a military one ignored good education in times where many other powers where rising up though sciences and good education.
2- The European occupation of the Arab country and dividing it into small states. Where Great Britain and France divided the Arab country through the SykesâPicot Agreement in 1916.
3- Planting Israel in the middle of the Arabs so they will never be able to get reunified again; and as a disastrous result part of the Arabs money have been wasted on silly armaments and armies.
4- Placing many ignorant puppet rulers (Dictators) to head the newly established small Arab states and as a result the resources and wealth of the Arabs were wasted in many different ways.

In spite of all the suffering, mainly the middle class and the high class Arabs understood the importance of the good education and many of them are highly educated. Now, many of the Arab countries have a serious problem with the number of highly educated people where they have no enough jobs for them; and they import foreign people for services.

All the Above made the Arab world unstable place until now, 500 years of suffering and STILL going on...... Arabs are just good peaceful humans being backstabbed again and again; and stereotyped and portrayed wrongly.

What do I expect when moving from California to Washington State?

Mother of

My fiancé and I are moving from the Bay Area to Washington by September of this year. Since we are quite done with the CA city lifestyle, we were hoping for some tips, pointers, and personal experiences.

What we don't care for:

Smog, dirty cities, conservative mindsets, hate of any kind, social media trends, materialistic personalities, emergency sirens going off every night, disrespectful neighbors, crammed houses, mass produced unhealthy food, everyone and their mom on man made drugs, overload of clustered pop dance clubs, not seeing any stars at night, hot humid mosquito filled weather, nor cal/so cal gang nonsense...

What we are interested in:

GREEN. Trees everywhere. Wildlife! Rivers, lakes, ocean, beaches, mountains, hiking trails, dog parks, shopping centers, co ops, farmers markets, metaphysical crystal stores, bead stores, book stores, library, jr college/state college, yoga, mma/boxing, art scenes, music venues, local eateries and bars, good 'ol coffee shops, Marijuana (hey, we're from Cali...that will never leave lol) fishing areas, museums, movies, camp sites, near points of interests, cabin/wilderness lifestyle, gardening, archery/hunting, tattoo shops, community volunteering

We're both artists (he plays professional metal music and I draw)
Along with our dogs Bear the Pit Bull and Wolf the German Shepherd, we are curious if WA has any 'land/acreage' areas. I've been training both my boys from day one and I would love to find some land to work them on.

How is the weather?
Whats the social life like per demographic?
What are the employment opportunities?
What is the best dog friendly nature points of interests?
We practice Shamanism, where can we find some love in that area?
Art scenes? Tattoo Shops? Music venues? College life?
Any schools you would recommend?
Our budget for rent is $1,000, is that doable?
What about the laws out there?
Dispensaries and marijuana? Do they have them like CA?
Vegetarian/raw lifestyle areas? Thanks!!!

Answer
The Olympia area sounds like you. Go there and poke around. If you want land, there is plenty of rural around there, to the south and west.

Marijuana has been decriminalized. Dispensaries will be open to all by the end of this year.

Almost no sun in the winter, but summer is spectacular. The forest is so dense you can't walk in much of it. Evergreen State Univ in Olympia has a very liberal reputation. So many questions!

I have twenty acres of forest for sale, remote but 20 miles from the ocean. Beautiful vista of just trees.

What are you waiting for?

How to clean a camping tent that smells like mildew?

family camping tents
on Camping Tents... Dome, Family, Backpacking Camping Tent Guide.
family camping tents image

Stella

I haven't used my camping tent for quite a long time and it now smells like mildew. How to get rid of this bad awful smell?

Answer
First, you need get a tote and fill it with clean water then add pine-sol in it. After that, you can place the tent, rain fly, tent poles, tent bag, stakes and stake bag in to the water, and leave them soak in the pine-sol solution for an hour or so. One hour is enough for the camping tent to absorb the aroma of the pine-sol solution, and then you will get a fresh smelling tent.

After the tent has soaked in the pine-sol solution for one hour, now you should take it out of the access water and reassemble the tent in your yard. Use water hose to pray the tent off and you should pay particular attention to the fabric on the bottom. Be sure it is thoroughly rinsed.

The last step is to dry the camping tent. You should let the tent air dry both inside and outside. Itâs important to wait until the tent and all the contents are fully dry before you pack it back up. Otherwise, the mildew will return. If you have a large family tent or multi-room tent, then you should wait patiently. If the weather is not good and you cannot dry the tent outside, you should place the tent in your garage or even inside your home or basement to let it dry. One thing you need to keep in mind is never dry your camping tent in a dryer because this could reduce the lifetime of the tent.

How to fix the broken camping tent poles?

Adela

I found one of my family tent poles is broken. How to fix that?

Answer
The easier way to fix the tent poles is to use tent pole repair sleeves. You should count your broken tent poles then go to a sporting goods store and buy as many sleeves as you have broken tent poles. Slip the tent pole repair sleeve over the broken tent pole, and wrap duct tape around the top and bottom of the sleeve to further secure it in place.

If you are not able to find a tent repair sleeve in the nearby store, you can go to a hardware store and buy some aluminum roof flashing and nylon clamps. These things can also help you to fix the tent poles. You need to cut the aluminum flashing to size with tin snips and wrap it around the broken sections of the tent pole. After that, put clamps at the top and bottom of the sleeve you have created to secure it in place. At last, you need to wrap the aluminum flashing with duct tape to cover any sharp edges.

secluded places to camp memorial day weekend, in the northwest?

Rosie

My friends and I are planning a camping trip memorial day weekend which is a very busy camping weekend in the northwest but we are hoping to leave a day early to get ahead of the rush. We're interested in warm climate, maybe some swimming areas and are willing to go 5-6 hours out of Seattle. If you know just the place please let me know!

Answer
Well you are starting you planning 6 months late all the best "secluded" places to camp that are reservable for the holiday weekend will have been booked up that long ago. Lesson learned there is always next year. Get reservations here,
http://www.reserveamerica.com/
http://www.recreation.gov/

Now for plan "B". Not all campsites are reservable many are on a first come basis and if you plan a few days earlier to take your trip you may actually find a spot to camp through the holiday weekend as always the early bird gets the warm and this holds true for popular destinations. http://woodalls.com/ lists all the campsites there are

Plan "C", Another option are truly secluded campsites away from the crowds called "dispersed camping" sites. These you drive out a forest service road or hike into the wild lands and pick your own spot to camp. You may still need to pick up a campfire permit and a parking permit but you will not have competition to find a spot and here is why. Dispersed camping does not provide any services that means no toilets, no picnic tables, no running water. You bring your own everything. To find the best locations where these sites are contact the Forest Service in the district you would like to go to. To start a search use a trip suggestion from webs services or a good book here is one I like,

Good Luck!

Where to visit attractive places in Victoria and Vancouver BC?

Q. Hi Friends,

I want to go Victoria Vancouver Kelowna Abbotsford and places around. Could you tell me what are the best and attractive places to visit?

To go Victoria how much ferry charge if I take my car with? Two or three families will come with me? To explore these cities but We don't have any idea where to go to see beautiful and attractive and never forgettable sites in these areas? :)

Thank you for help. :)

Answer
Well, lets take this is alphabetical order:

Abbotsford - There are a number of wineries that offer tours and tastings as you are coming to Abbotsford. In the Abbotsford area you can take a self guided farm tour which can be interesting. In Matsqui (a part of Abbotsford) you can find a wave pool.

Chilliwack - I know you did not ask about it but since it is only about 20 minutes beyond Abbotsford I though I would mention it. There are a number activities and places to see in the area from Cultus Lake to farm tours and then, if you want to take a farther drive, cross the Fraser River, head through Agassiz, and stop at Harrison Hot Springs..beautiful views and several campgrounds if you feel like camping. Back in Chilliwack you will find two water-slides, one at Cultus Lake and another farther up the Valley just past the turnoff to Agassiz by Bridle Veil Falls. While you are there stop and take the walk to the falls. You may also want to take time to visit Minter Gardens, located in the same area.

Kelowna - In the Okanagan area of BC, the terrain there is more oriented towards the desert, you will find some if you head about half an hour south. Kelowna has many wineries open to the public and a couple of nice orchard tours during the summer and fall. My sons enjoyed the orchard tour and got hooked on the fresh apple cider...so did I for that matter. Kelowna is at the northern tip of Okanagan lake and although it has become touristy over the past few years it is still worth a visit. Take time to drive down the lake towards Penticton...there are several places to stop along the way.

Vancouver - The largest city in BC, visit Stanley Park and certainly the Capilano Suspension Bridge and the Lynn Canyon area in North Vancouver are worth a visit. There are several museums and art galleries if your interests are in that area as well as a number of theatres (both live and movie). Although Granville Island is touristy, I think it is worth spending some time at, especially during the summer months. There are several beaches in the area and if you feel like a drive, head along the Sea to Sky Highway to Whistler. A beautiful drive and Whistler, for all it's tourism, is still an enjoyable place to visit....make a day of it

Victoria - The Capital of BC and home to the BC Legislature and many museums, art galleries, and parks, both public and private. Take a trip to Butchart Gardens or wander around the Inner Harbour region near the Legislature (take a tour there) and the BC Museum and IMAX theatre. A short drive (or long walk) from there you will find the official residence of BC's Lieutenant Governor, the grounds and gardens are generally open to the public although the residence is not. Last time there I had the pleasure of a tour of the house with excellent guides, the Lieutenant Governor and his wife. The city itself has and "old England" feel to it in many parts and there are many interesting sites within a short walk of the downtown area. Take a "Ghostly Walks" tour in the evening for a glimpse into the past of Victoria and stories about some of the former inhabitants that do not want to seem to leave. There are also many other tours you can take from a gardens tour to whale watching and a variety of activities suited to most tastes.

The ferry to Victoria leaves from Tsawwassen regularly and the current one way costs (without any taxes) are as follows:

Car only, up to 20 feet - $ 43.20
Adult Passengers (12 and older) - $ 12.85
Child (5 to 11) - $ 6.45
Child under 5 - Free

The ferry trip itself, once you reach the gulf islands, can be quite enjoyable from the scenery on the passing islands to boats on the water and a variety of wildlife in the water...I have even seen Killer Whales from the deck of the ferry.

Going camping may 18 and I live in ct, but I wanna find a campground that allows under 18 people to camp there without adult supervision. So stupid answers please!

Answer
You want "stupid" answers, but I'm not going to give you one.

However, it's highly unlikely you're going to find any type of campground that will allow children to stay there without adult supervision. It's undoubtedly illegal and would be a big liability risk, as well.

Recomendations for camping in the New England Area?

Greyshoesw

I want to go camping this summer with some friends. We're looking for a place that's good for hiking, has a lake to swim in, boat on, and maybe a waterfall or something. Also, allows us to light campfires. We're looking for a good place somewhere between New York state and... Maine, I guess. What are your favorite camp sites?

Answer
Rangeley Lake State Park in Rangeley, Maine. Its on an 8 mile long lake with trophy size landlocked salmon. There is a boat launch at the park and a swimming area. Lots of hiking is nearby. Some favorite hikes are Bald Mountain and Aziscoos Mountain. Both have awesome views. You can hike into Angel Falls, Maine's highest waterfall with one drop of 90 feet. Its about 10 miles from the park. Three miles from the park is Cascade Stream with a series of small waterfalls.

Where is the best place to stay in Yosemit during January?

Droppin Kn

I'm focused on location over ammenities and willing to pay $150 a night. I'm unsure if there is a cabin for rent in a great location or if you can rent camping gear for the night in a cool area in January. Also, how far is Yosemite from San Francisco in terms of driving distance? Thanks!

Answer
Try Yosemite Lodge, it's right near the falls and the restaurant and cafe/bar are both nice. The hotel is a bit basic, but it's right by the Yosemite falls. Off-season is $98-140/room/night depending on the quality of room and weekend/midweek. Poke around the site below, there are some interesting alternatives. There should be no need to stay outside the park in January and, depending where you stay, snow could be an issue if you do, I've had to use chains on a 4x4 to get in to Yosemite before.

When I drive there in the spring, to photograph the falls in full flood, I leave at 6:30am and get there for lunch and am back home for dinner. In the winter snow can be a real issue, as I mentioned before I've sometimes had to drive tens of miles on snow. You should really have 4x4 and snow chains to go there in January, sometimes they will insist that you use snow chains or don't enter the park. Time wise, 4 to 5 hours taking it easy, unless there is snow.

Where are places to get good looking hiking/camping gear?

I am going on a hike with my mum and it isn't the sort of thing we usually do. I want to get some cute hiking/camping gear like boots, pants or packs. What are some good places where i can find these?
thanks

Answer
Academy
Wal-Mart
Target
K-Mart
REI
Cabella's
Bass ProShop
Campmor.com

Really though, even though there are plenty of designs and colors, you don't usually pick gear this way, that is, based on looks. You want the item that meets your needs and fits your budget. Usually if you are hiking you want your items to be as lightweight as possible so your backpack isn't too heavy. But the weather will always affect your major choices. In summer you need less clothing, less bulky sleeping gear, can use a lighter weight tent...etc...it all fits in a smaller pack.

For a winter hike, your clothing absolutely must be suitable for the weather, no matter what, this is for safety. You need to stay warm but you don't want to sweat. Dress in layers so you can add and shed pieces depending on your needs. You want 4 distinct layers: a thermal layer like long johns or under armor, a light layer like a long sleeve T-shirt, at least one warm layer like wool or fleece, and a waterproof layer like a rain jacket or poncho. Also avoid COTTON except for undies. Your layers described above must be synthetic (polyester), wool, or silk. If you get cotton wet in the cold, it will not keep you warm. Vests are handy because they keep your core warm...which is your chest and abdominal area...where all your organs are.

For what it is worth...

Jansport makes pretty bookbags, and they are very durable. These would be suitable for a day hike but not backpacking.

Kelty has bright colored sleeping bags, tents, and packs. This is "real" gear, and it is relatively affordable. It is on the lowbudget of the real deal.

Slumberjack makes pretty sleeping bags. This is another low-end outfitter but they make camping gear as opposed to sleepover gear.

Another piece with a lot of choices in pattern are travel hammocks. Look for parachute nylon. They are pretty reasonable price, and they ball up in your hand. You can hang them between two trees for a very restful nap or afternoon with a book.

You can also express yourself with your water bottle. Try a Nalgene bottle, it is almost indestructible. They come in lots of colors.

I suggest really...that you borrow your tent and sleeping bags, etc. And spend your money on good boots and raingear, gloves, skiband and beanie hats.

Any suggestions for a good camping site in New Hampshire?

Hi, we are looking for a good tent campground near the white mountains in New Hampshire. We just went to Jigger Johnson's- nice sites but not much to do...river was low. We do not need any specific kid-oriented activities because we do not have kids, but looking for somewhere cheap, lots of room at the tent sites and a river or lake on the campground. Thanks!

Answer
I love Russell Pond. The pond is great for swimming or canoeing and the sites are real nice. No running water or electricity at the sites but the bathrooms have flush toilets, hot water, electricity and hot showers ($2.00 a shower though).

A small group of friends and I are interested in going camping this summer. We're all around 18 and 19 years old, and don't feel the need to pay an arm and a leg to camp in tents. We're just looking for a place that will let us camp for a few days (since some sites consider 21 years or old as an adult, others it's 18). Does anyone know where we could go? I'm having a hard time finding places online.

Answer
National forests do not have age restrictions and they don't cost an arm and leg. look for sites in the Alleghenny national forest.

Where should I take my photographer boyfriend away as a surprise to get good pictures of stars?

Romantic g

I want to surprise my boyfriend by taking him away to a nice hotel somewhere in the uk, but as he loves taking pictures of the stars - and I know that's difficult unless you're in certain places, I would love to be able to take him somewhere perfect for this. Need photographer help! Any ideas?

Answer
Hotels aren't usually so great because they are in towns, where there is light. You might be better off trying to find a campsite somewhere like Dartmoor, the Lake District, west coast of Wales, or the Scottish Highlands.

You'll still to walk/drive a little way away from the campsite and then you'll need to sit in the dark and wait for at least 15 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the darkness. If possible, turn off or cover up the LCD display on your digital camera and avoid using your phone, as the backlight of the screen will dazzle you. Don't use a torch because this will spoil your night vision. Either wait until you can see clearly in the dark, or use a red LED rear bike light. It won't affect your night vision so much.

You will need a tripod to get any decent pictures of the night sky. Other non-technical things you will need: warm clothes, fingerless gloves, flask of hot drink, camping chairs. It gets surprisingly cold outside at night, even in summer, so wrap up warm!

Have fun,
Jonathan

Me and my boyfriend would like to go to Michigan but we are not sure the best location. We plan on going sometime this June or July. Anybody have any good ideas?
We love the outdoor and the water. We want a something on the romantic side but also fun. Also any good festivals around that time?

Answer
What do you like? What are your interests? Mackinaw is fun, but you're talking high season then, especially in July. Traverse City is the same - and Cherry Festival is the first full week of July, or thereabouts, so the hotels and motels are probably all booked up already then. Saugatuck can be fun. Frankenmuth is interesting, but I don't think there's enough there to take a week to see it all. The Les Cheneaux islands in the UP have places to rent, and great fishing, I'm told.

If you like camping, we have lots of state parks. If you can get reservations, you could stay at 2-e parks for a few days each, and see several areas. If you like biking, there are a lot of trails, like the White Pine Trail, Kal-Haven trail, and Hart-Montague trail that are great rides.

I'd suggest you update your question with more details about what you might want to do or not do, and also go to Michigan.gov and see what they have for tourism resources.

edit - again - go to the michigan.gov website, and see what you can find. The link below will start you at the travel and tourism page. There's an e-newsletter you can sign up for that will get you monthly ideas of places to visit, including a list of festivals.

If you like the water, I'd suggest you go to Mackinaw City. There are lots of hotels there, from mom and pop places to the big chains, so you should still find some place to stay if you start calling now. Try the travelocity and other hotel sites for better prices. You can use Mackinaw as a base to explore Mackinac Island, the UP, and the northern lower peninsula, too. Try going down to around Wolverine, MI to rent a canoe and paddle the Sturgeon River. Or go up to Les Cheneaux Islands, and take the kayaking tours offered there. Go down to Traverse City, and explore there. Take the ferry over to the island, and rent bikes on Mackinac Island. You can ride the perimeter of the island, and shop in town. One caution - there are no cars allowed on the island except for a few emergency vehicles, so most travel is done by bikes and horse-drawn buggies. Watch your step, or you can be hit by a bike, or step in something you would rather avoid.

Where is a good place to camp in South West Michigan?

I'm looking for a great place to camp in South West Michigan between South Haven and Michigan City on or near Lake Michigan. I really don't want one of those trailer park/camp grounds with a million other people. We're looking for a place where we can be left alone and have fun in nature.

What is the cheapest way to travel across BC?

Cam

So I'm looking at coming over to canada and travelling around BC for about 2 or 3 weeks during your summer, I will have a mountain bike with me and will need to transport that around with me.
What are your suggestions for cheap methods of transport around BC and what would let me see most of the scenery that I can without spending too much?
Hire Car, campervan, Bus?

Answer
It might not be the cheapest but travelling in your own vehicle is the only realistic way if you want to see a lot of places in BC and take the bike with you. If you want to take a bike on the Greyhound bus, it has to be in a box meant for bicycles, and there's a surcharge for that, $30 no matter how short the trip is. The bus just doesn't go to some places and in others, such as where I am on Vancouver Island, it only goes once a day. That makes scheduling travel a bit complicated.

Whether it's worth hiring a camper is hard to say. They aren't cheap to rent but having one would allow you to camp, which is cheaper than staying in any other kind of accommodation. Campgrounds, which are everywhere, range in price anywhere from free or close to it to $50 for the most expensive ones, averaging around $30 a night. Motels won't be any less than $70 a night, usually more. Of course, renting a smaller vehicle means you can still camp, but then you will need a tent and all the eqiupment. Camper vans usually come with it all built in. And while many people camp all over BC with tents, being inside a vehicle at night is safer, with fewer worries about wildlife getting at your food.

Quiet beach spot around Vancouver that you might even be able to set a camping tent just for a day?

mohsen

I'm looking for a beach in Vancouver with minimum traffic that ideally you're the only couple in there. Any suggestion?? Thanks :)

Answer
It's illegal to camp on beaches around Vancouver (for public health reasons, among others). That's true of any densely populated urban area like it anywhere in the US or Canada. If they did not enforce such measures the beaches would be clogged with squatters and the cities would have to maintain toilet facilities and other services to avoid befouling the areas.

Closest place nearby I can think of would be to rent kayaks in Deep Cove, northwest of the city, and paddle up to the end of Indian Arm fiord to camp there.

Or take the ferry to Vancouver Island and find camping areas near the shores there. Most areas restrict camping actually on beaches anyway. You have to be set back a ways from the actual beaches for various reasons including interfering with day use and natural habitats and the fact that most people are clueless about the levels that the tides reach on coastlines.

we will be going to sidney on april 2nd, and we were thinking of visiting the blue mountains park. is there any way which we could see the local wildlife (roo's and koalas) in something approaching a natural environment?

We have a limited budget, and need to stay in NSW. thank you for your input.

Answer
I am sorry nobody has answered you earlier, honestly, if you are in a scout group, I would seriously get on the www and find scout groups in places like Katoomba, Leura, Blue Mountains, etc etc, and get involved with your scouts teaming up with Australian Scouts and off you go, I don't think you'll get cheaper and more fun than that. Also, the Blue Mountains are surrounded by native bush, so if the Australian Scouts just take you all on a bush walk and camp, you will see wildlife and plants and have a great time. The Blue Mountains are incredibly natural, it's like winding road thru bush, villiage, town, more road, trees as far as the eye can see. I think this would be almost free if you can get local scout masters involved, and you know what, I think they would jump at the chance.

where is a good spot to camp for free around the Campbelltown district in NSW Australia?

We are willing to travel a bit but obviously not hours away. Like we go to Blue Mountains alot but we prefer somewhere a little closer to home. Any suggestions would be great.

Answer
?, this is not Camplelltown it is more a place called Windsor, the place we used to go to, if it's still operating is called Mitchell Park, on Cattai Creek, it's more a darn river than a creek, had some great times there.

I need an out of the ordinary emergency kit any suggestions?

family tent camping supply list

family tent camping supply list image

Ether D

It needs to have things that normal emergency kits don't, packed with stuff I wouldn't think to have in a very very BAD situation. I don't care how big it is. I am talking earthquake, flood, tornado, w/e survival situations where I cannot get to a hospital. Any suggestions? :)

Answer
How long an emergency are you talking about preparing for? 2 days? 2 weeks? 2 months? 2 years?

It makes a difference. We have two years food storage in our pantry, for three adults, at a 5000 calorie a day diet. We can also purify our own drinking water, heat/cook with a wood stove, and we have our "living pantry" which includes a large garden, fruit/nut orchards, dairy goats, meat goats and sheep, chickens, etc.

I'm going to assume you want to get through a big crisis, in your local area (not nation-wide). You have to look at Hurricane Katrina for your example. You should have at least two whole months of supplies on hand, before things even get back to normal. OMG! LMAO! We're having a minor earthquake as I type to you. I live in the Ring Of Fire, so that's not actually that uncommon, just really funny that it happened while I'm typing this!

What is the primary need as a human being? The answer is air. You do not seem to be concerned about biological attack. As long as you don't live near volcanoes, air is probably a mute point.

Second most important need for humans? Water. You can store two months worth of water. You need 1 gallon per day, per person. This ONLY provides water for drinking and cooking. Not washing yourself, clothes, plates, etc. If you live in a hot climate, store more.

More importantly have ways to purify your own drinking water. We capture rainwater off our roof and purify it on a daily basis. Have several methods on hand. I HIGHLY recommend you purchase a Big Berkey. Have other methods as well. Do not purchase bottles of bleach, put them on the shelf, and forget about them, believing you will have the method to sterilize water forever. After about six months, bleach breaks down to little more than salt water. Old bleach will NOT provide you with safe clean water.

Humans third most important need is a tie. Shelter and heat (usually fire in an emergency situation). Both keep you in place and safe from moving around doing stupid things. It's also good for moral to have both shelter and fire. So a camping stove which runs on the white gas canisters is great for cooking (DO NOT USE INSIDE/carbon monoxide). A tent large enough for your entire family is also good. Remember if your house is damaged (like all the windows blown out), but still structurally safe, you can pitch the tent inside your house. Just clean up any glass, and pitch the tent. Everyone sleeping together will be safer and warmer.

Fire extinguishers, ultra important post disasters
Long burning candles
matches
LED head lamp flashlights. The batteries last a long time, and both your hands are free, since they are on your head. We use them all the time on our farm. They are cheap too, buy lots.
Food you can cook with little effort, which your family is use to. A crisis is NOT the time to spring dehydrated split pea soup on your family.
Any medications your family takes on a regular basis
Prescription eye glasses for anyone who wears glasses or contacts. I say glasses too, NOT more contacts. Glasses can be put on RIGHT NOW in an emergency.
Hand crank radio
Solar charger, for your cell phones
Good sturdy leather gloves for cleaning up dangerous debris.
Bicycles can get through most disasters if you have to leave your home. Plus you can lift them over things, unlike a larger motorcycle.
Copies of all documents to prove who you are, and what you owned (marriage, birth, insurance, social security, etc) You should also have a current list of phone numbers of all family/friends. If your cell phones dies you probably don't have those numbers memorized.
Rugged farm type jeans, boots, and coats.
Womens Kotex and pressure bandages (like ace bandages) so you can stop bleeding on a wound.
Wool blankets, wool retains 80% of its heat keeping abilities even soaking wet, and can be used to put someone out, if their clothes catch on fire. Modern synthetic blankets would melt to them, and make it much worse.
Tweezers, of many different sizes and shapes to pluck large objects like glass shards out, and really fine splinters.
I recommend Dr. Bronner's mint soap. It has natural antibacterial properties. You can wash yourself with it, brush your teeth with it, and wash your plates with it.
Have disposable plates and silverware on hand, so you don't need so much water.
Bottles of eyewash are very important.
Anti-diarrheal medication and pain relivers
Have children? Brand new coloring books, quiet games, and soft toys will go a long way toward their mental state.
Garbage bags. You can wear them as a poncho, and you will need a LOT of them, until garbage service picks back up.
Two really good can openers (in case one breaks, gets lost, ect)

That's all I have time to type right now, but if you want more ideas, send me an email, and I'll direct you to some very good food storage/emergency prep groups.

Want to go camping with my dog, what should I bring for him?

Kelly

My family are planning a three days camping trip and we want to bring our husky with us. What should we bring for him besides dog food?

Answer
Following are some safety tips for camping with a dog:

1. Protect your dog health by talking to the vet about flea and tick prevention.
Before leaving out for the camping trip with your dog, consider your pet health care needs for flea and tick prevention. Have a conversation with the veterinarian about the place youâll be camping, trends in the region, and the overall health of your dog.

2. Bring enough dog food.
Your dog will need more food than usual during the camping trip because that camping activities burn lots of extra calories. So you should take enough dog food and be generous with food if youâve had an especially active day.

3. Keep your dog warm at night.
If you have a multi-room family tent, itâs nice of you to let your dog sleep in the tent especially when outside is cold. If there is no more space for your dog inside the tent, make sure your dog will stay warm. Dogs lose heat from their noses, so they hide them when theyâre cold. In addition to a favorite bed, offer your dog blankets to burrow under. Dogs with short coats may even need an extra layer like a doggie sweater.

4. Get a good tie-out stake and choose the right ground location.
A metal corkscrew tie-out stake and 20-foot lead will allow your dog to safely enjoy the campsite. Check the stake often as tugging and wet conditions can loosen it, especially in sandy ground.

Please advice my family how to choose a 3 season tent for camping for 6 people.?

We would like to begin camping again this summer, but haven't done any since before our children were born. Please advice how to determine the best choices for our investment. We need 1 with a lot of room and at least room for an air mattress. We would prefer 1 with multiple rooms option but do not want poor quality. Anyone know anything about Turbo Tents? Any advice- will be great.

Answer
I haven't heard of turbo tents. A bit pricey I might say. If you want good quality, a stay dry guarantee, easy set up, and room for 6 + all your gear I recommend Colman Tents. And this model,

According to 'Family Radio', the 'Judgment Day'(the Rapture) will begin May 21, 2011 and the Earth will be destroyed on October 21, 2011.

Of course this is all nonsense, but I would like to know, does it scare you that a very powerful group is saying the world will end this year? Do you feel that this is another 'Heaven's Gate' or Jonestown type cult?

The 'Family Radio' website says:

"Judgment Day, May 21, 2011, The Bible Guarantees it!"

It shows the year 2012 crossed out, as if to say there is no 2012.

The host of the radio show, 89 year-old Harold Camping, has said he "knows" he will be taken up into Heaven before the end of the world.

I wonder, does he intend to participate in some mass suicide?

No crazies please.
"Rolling apocalypses." Very funny..lol

Answer
Hi there - good question.

I did not know that Camping was proclaiming then end of the world in May , but you were right.
I checked his web site and it said in big letters.

''THE END OF THE WORLD IS ALMOST HERE! HOLY GOD WILL BRING JUDGMENT DAY ON MAY 21, 2011''

I GUARANTEE you , the world will NOT end on that day , and Camping will be proved to be a false teacher.
The unmistakable fact is that according to Mark 13:32-33 is that no man has advanced warning of the time when the end of this world system will take place.

But for the moment lets consider how Camping and his FR is wrong.
Camping bases his 'end of the world' date using a known start date and adding 7 days.

In his view the Bible says that each day equals 1000 years.
So Camping is saying that the end will be at the end of the seventh day , which is 7000 years., and by his calculations that comes to May 2011.

Unfortunately his calculations are based on a fundamental error.

His reckons that a day truly is , and is exactly 1000 years.
Camping and co' believe this as they take the account of creation to be a literal 7 days long.

Exodus 20:11 .''For in six days Jehovah made the heavens and the earth, the sea and everything that is in them, and he proceeded to rest on the seventh day.''

However, the Bible does NOT says that 1 day for God EQUALS 1000 years in man's time.

It says this instead.

Psalm 84:10 ''For a day in your courtyards is better than a thousand [elsewhere]. I have chosen to stand at the threshold in the house of my God Rather than to move around in the tents of wickedness.''

2 Peter 3:8 ''.However, let this one fact not be escaping YOUR notice, beloved ones, that one day is with Jehovah as a thousand years and a thousand years as one day. ''

The scriptures may seem to indicate that a day is a thousand years but it does NOT say that it is equal.

This next verse goes contrary to the idea that 1000 years equals one day , it now compares it to a mere night watch , which is obviously far less than 1 day.

Psalm 90:4 ''For a thousand years are in your eyes but as yesterday when it is past, And as a watch during the night.''

In the next verse we see another reference of a day with God , and it too does not indicate that the day is equal to 1000 years in man's time.

Revelation 16:14 .''-- to gather them together to the war of the great day of God the Almighty.''

When you go through all the instances where a day and God are concerned the vast majority of them do not indicate a specific time duration , and definitely nothing to indicate that one day equals 1000 years.

On Campings site he did not show any scriptual proof to back the claim that 1000 years equals one day., because there is none.

This is a most fundamental requirement for his 'theory' and his teaching to be true.

The facts is , according to the Bible is that days are not fixed in duration , they can be short or long.
Some people have a problem understanding this , especially when it comes to the creation account in Genesis , but it is really very straight forward.

I am a man, I used to work building houses , it was a hard job.
Some days I was at work from sun up to well past sun down.,, on other days my work day was only a few hours long if I accomplished the days assigned tasks quickly.
This is not hard to comprehend , my work days varied in length , but I can still call them quite correctly , my work days.
Just as my work days varied in the exact time length so can Gods.

Jehovah Gods work days vary in duration and he kept going until the task set out upon was completed.
When looking back on the creation account , this means that some days could have been millions if not billions of years long , and some may have been very short by comparison....Whatever it took to get the job done.

So back to Camping.
His whole theory is based on fixed 1000 years days , but this is NOT supported in the Bible.

Camping is simply WRONG., and he is misleading his listeners.

Matthew 15:14 ''LET them be. Blind guides is what they are. If, then, a blind man guides a blind man, both will fall into a pit.â

By his own words he will prove that he is not following the true God of the Bible - Jehovah.

Matthew 7:15-16 ''âBe on the watch for the false prophets that come to YOU in sheepâs covering, but inside they are ravenous wolves. By their fruits YOU will recognize them''
