So, my family and I are trying to find a nice tent-camping and fishing park before school starts up again near the end of August. We've been to the Pinnacles and San Luis Reservoir and although nice, we're still looking. Someone told me Angel Island, but my brother-in-law is freaked out by being on an island overnight (I don't know why), so I'm looking for help.

Any suggestions?

Can some recommend a very good quality 2-3 Person Backpacking Tent?

Here is an article on how to choose a tent,

Some friends and I are planning a camping trip to Texas over spring break. We'd like to be fairly desolate, embedded in nature's surroundings, hopefully away from the spring-breakers. I have no idea what a good place to go would be. We'd preferably like to stay out of State or National parks.

Answer
Well, I'm not sure if New Brunsfels is too far for you, but they have nice camp sites next to the river you can go tubing on. The river actually does the work for you. Other than that, there are several good parks but they're all state parks in the East. On the West there are some cool ones, Balmourea being a cool one where there is a swimming pool with a natural corral reef.

What are some good camping sites that are in Texas?

This summer my family and I are going to go camping some place in Texas. Preferably near a river, mountain, or a lake. As long as it's pretty. And it has to be at most 5 hours from Beaumont. Thanks! (:

Answer
There are many state parks, 25 or 30, within 5 hours of Beaumont . Here is a Texas state park site .
One thing to remember when camping especially in south east Texas is alligators . Check with park personal . Also mountains are about 11 or 12 hours away in west Texas .

I already know it's beautiful - I just need practical advice. Planning on a trip with our two pre-teen boys between April and August. When is the best time to go? How and when do I make reservations? Are there cabins within the park to rent (we don't really "camp") or places fairly close outside the park? My son wants to fish there -are there good spots? What else is there to do?

Also, I was reading that maybe we should continue driving North to see some places along the Oregon coast. Any advice there?

Thanks in advance - oh, we are coming from So. Cal. Maybe flying to Sacramento then driving.

Answer
Follow the news to see whether the National Parks are open. They seem to be closing them as of today.

Curious to know the specific laws about pitching a tent in public if it's not at a designated camp site?

Angela

Sometimes when I take my kids to the park we pitch a little tent there so they have a place for shade & rest in between playing. I like to stay at the park with them for a few hours because I'm a playful mom & love playing outside. I bring plenty of snacks & water.

The main reason I bought it was because at most parks there is no toilet or the toilet is so far away, so I also bought my daughter a training toilet that we put in there. It's very handy. I keep it clean for them.

So Is it ok to pitch a tent in public in a place that's not designated as a camp site?

One kid at the park who was particularly outgoing invited himself into our tent and asked all about it. His mom got upset and of course I understood why she would be upset. I would not let my kids go anywhere near an unidentified tent. No WAY!

But I know myself & my circumstances and I'm a harmless, law-abiding citizen & a loving mother and I just wonder if I'm allowed to pitch a tent in any old park for the comfort of my kids with close supervision?

Answer
This is entirely up to local laws. Unless you are told to remove it, I would think that most parks would be fine with such a use. Don't lock paths, don't make a mess, don't leave it overnight, and it should be fine.

What will the weather be like when I visit the Canadian Rockies in May 2012?

Jonathan

Hi,
I arrive in Calgary on May 13th 2012 and plan on driving to Banff, Lake Louise, Jasper then on to Vancouver.
What will the weather be like at this time of year as I have read mixed reports and am a little confused?
Will driving conditions be ok and will hotels, camp sites, and activities be open?
Many Thanks

Answer
As others have pointed out, mountain weather can be unpredictable. You're getting mixed reports because anything is possible. The roads will be clear of the winter snow though it's still possible to get flurries at higher elevations. Remote possibility but still there. If you are driving in the mountains, it's a good idea to get a weather and road report before starting so you have some idea what to expect. It will probably be warm and even hot in the daytime but nights could be much cooler. It could be rainy on the coast, could be sunny, could alternate between the two all day long.

Hotels will be open, most campgrounds should be open, same for most activities. The Victoria Day weekend is the traditional start to the summer season in Canada and on that weekend you can expect hotels and campgrounds to be very busy. In 2012 that will be the weekend of May 19-21. Anything that isn't open by then probably isn't going to open at all that summer. You'll be just ahead of the crowds.

What is a relatively non technical but high peak to climb within 2 days in Alberta or BC?

KILDYOURFA

I am planning a road trip through the Canadian Rockies through Jasper, Banff, and then off to British Colombia, Vancouver, and Vancouver Island. Does anyone know of any easily accessible day or 2 day hikes that are not too technical (No rock, ropes, or ice climbing) and would offer significant elevation and views? I am not worried about straight aerobic difficulty or altitude...

Answer
Fisher Peak near Cranbrook BC. it is a challenge but there are no ropes and nothing vertical. an average person can be at the summit in about 5-6 hours but the way down is a lot faster. there is clean water most of the way up and incredibly sweet and cold pools in the basin that you can fill hydration bags for the rest of the way up. i have been up countless times and i never fail to be amazed at the view. it's the tallest peak in the range at just over 9000 feet and the air does get a bit thin near the top. i have met people from age 8 to 80 on the trail so it can be done by most anyone who is fairly fit. here are a few links.

http://www.trailpeak.com/trail-Fisher-Peak-near-Cranbrook-BC-6904
if it's good enough for Scott Neidermayer and the Stanley cup you might like it too. the bonus is the trail-head is about 30 minutes from Cranbrook and there are a ton of camping sites closer if you are not doing the motel / hotel route. i have camped in the basin a few times and really enjoyed the experience.
have fun, take a lot of pictures, and be safe. make sure you read up on safety in bear country as well as cougars habits. i once watched a grizzly steal my pack for the Snickers bars in it while i was on my way down from the summit but i at least got it back though it was in rough shape.

what do we need to go camping?

Jess

So me and my brothers just got a tent, and we really want to become a camping family.
We now have a tent, a portable gas stove, cooking utensils, chairs, sleeping bags, what else do we need to go camping for a few days?

Answer
Hello, Happy to hear that you have caught the camping bug. Its always a fantastic adventure to explore the great outdoors. I take it that you'll be car camping. If you're going to a camp ground you won't need to bring any water purification methods.
You did say that you already have a tent so to go along with that you should have a ground sheet. You can use a tarp that is a little bigger than the footprint of the tent or make one from heavy plastic. This is a moisture barrier that will keep your tent dry should it rain as well as adding a little layer of warmth. If it's a new tent you won't have to worry too much about waterproofing it right now. But over time it will need it. I do use waterproofing spray is on my hiking and snow boots, as well as rain/windproof jacket & pants and gaiters.
You'll be much warmer and drier in a sleeping bag with a sleeping pad underneath you. If you want extra cush or you're snow camping use two sleeping pads underneath you. Besides your tent, your sleeping bag is the most important piece of camping equipment.
You probably already have a lot of stuff that you can use for camping in your house.

Here's a short list of camping equipment:

Shelter - Tent, poles, stakes, ground sheet
Sleeping - Sleeping bag, sleeping pad
Essentials - Water bottles, waterproof matches/lighter, map & compass, basic first aid kit, whistle and/or signal mirror, nylon cord-50', pocket knife, emergency blanket, extra food, extra clothing, sunglasses, sunscreen, water purification, headlamp or flashlight and extra batteries. Keep these items in your day pack when you go hiking and exploring.
Cooking - Cook set, spoon/knife/fork set, biodegradable soap, scrub pad, food
Base camp accessories - Cooler/ice chest, water bag or large jug, dish pan, paper towels, lantern, storage containers for food, Ziploc bags, large spoon, knife, spatula, can opener, small whisk, small grater, hot pad holders, plate/bowl, cup, cutting board, aluminum foil, spice kit.
Miscellaneous - bandana, camera, binoculars, repair/sewing kit, fishing gear, journal/pen or pencil, reading material, nature guides, trail games, trowel, toilet paper, personal toiletries, lip balm, bug repellant, towel, day pack.

Make sure you take clothing appropriate for the climate you expect to encounter.
Inner Layer - wicking layer: long underwear top & bottom, liner socks, outer socks, t-shirt, shorts
Insulation Layer - Wool, synthetic or fleece shirt/sweater down/fiberfill jacket, wool or fleece pants, gloves, wool or fleece hat.
Protective layer - Rain/windproof jacket & pants, gaiters, hiking boots waterproofed, camp shoes, sun hat.
Happy Trails to you!

Bet Head

All my family is going to Kern River, CA for this fourth of july weekend... and they are begging me to go. Only problem is my baby is 3 months old and she hates the heat. They're saying it wont be that hot since will be camping by the river, but I'm still not sure if its a good idea. Need some advice..

Answer
My husband and I took our daughter camping for 3 days when she was 1 1/2 months old. She loved it! It's just one of those things though. Your baby may like it or not. Only one way to find out. Try to find a shady area to camp in. We had bought a huge 2 bedroom tent with a screened in front porch. We opened the 2 rooms to make 1 big one and I was able to fit her bassinet in the room with us. I was also able to fit all the coolers and her swing in the porch area. If you have a camper it may be easier but could get stuffy.

How to get rid of snakes in my yard?

BeagleMomm

I live in AR, we have recently had quite a lot of rain. My backyard has a small river in it.
I have recently had to take care of a fire ant problem... but then I have also come across a few snake holes while walking my dogs in the past few days.

I realize it's only natural that they be here, but I have a horrible fear of snakes. I was bitten by one as a kid and I'm just completely terrified of them now. Even the ones that aren't poisonous or don't bite. I cannot stand to look at them.

If I can't get rid of them completely in my yard, how do I at least keep them away from the house? So I don't have to be afraid to leave my back porch? Is there a time of the season when they will just naturally go away?

I'm also afraid of my dogs finding one and trying to play with it and getting hurt. Can this happen?

Any help would be appreciated. Please - serious answers only. Thank you everyone.

Answer
alright. Snakes are pretty dangerous reptiles to begin with. i hope i did bring u some help.

Best solution is to contact the local pest control and ask them to advise your situation and probably set traps to catch them.

For your part, U might want to clean up your rubbish around yard if you have any. This might lead to attracting rodents, which is food for the snakes.

Clean the possible hide outs as well. (Get rid of lumber piles, trash piles, high weeds and grasses, and debris) If you are out doing so, so should anyone u know are, please advise them to put on heavy boots and pants as a precaution. Be cautious and keep a lookout at areas where u are stepping or handling which might be possible areas of rest for the snakes. Block openings where snakes might enter buildings. Snakes can pass through extremely small openings and usually enter near or below ground level. Be sure doors, windows, and screens fit tightly. Search walls and floors for holes or crevices. Inspect the masonry of foundations, fireplaces, and chimneys; plug or cement cracks. Plug spaces around pipes that go through outside walls. Fasten galvanized screen over drains or ventilators, or over large areas of loose construction.

If you do encounter any snakes, do not try to provoke it and take note of its appearance, this will greatly help the pest control. Should anyone be bitten, do not allow the victim to eat nor drink especially alcohol. Do not place ICE on the wounds, do not attempt to give anti-venom or anti-anxiety medications.

During your time in the yard, do keep a stick handy. Explain to your children or family about the serious-ness of the situation and best keep the dog indoors for the time being as you do not know whether the snakes are poisonous.

OR

i have always used this methods during long camps in the wild. I used SULPHUR as a precaution and dump the powder in a circle around my tent to prevent pest and snakes.

lastly, i personally dont believe there is a season where they will go away. They might be here due to possible food sources or like u said, the rain. Its better to solve the problem on hand than to wait for something to happen.

I hope the snakes will go away! Good luck!

Where can I go camping in New York or other nearby states?

sik892

I want to go camping this weekend but I don't know where to go. This is what I am looking for. Somewhere in upstate New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey or anywhere else not to far from NYC. I want to go tent camping and I am looking for something secluded, meaning I don't want to be at a campground with other people and RVs, I want just a random place in the woods where it will be just me and my friends. And it would be nice if they have a river or lake nearby.

Answer
In PA you can camp in the state forest land with no one camping near you. You will need a permit (free) and they will either mail it or fax it to you. Check out the website www.dcnr.state.pa.us/forestry/camping

This site has maps and shows you trails and things to do while camping. It will also tell you how to obtain a camping permit.

Have fun!!

What is a good knife for self defense and practical applications?

best camping site maryland
on Hart-Miller Island State Park: Best Maryland Places to Picnic Guide
best camping site maryland image
Q. I am looking for a good knife that would fulfill these roles but I am not sure on what to get. I live in Maryland, and I am looking for a knife that I can openly wear and use when I go on hunting trips and one that I can use to defend myself also. I am looking for a knife that is not serrated and preferably has a tanto blade. My price point is at the max $120. Any ideas?

Answer
NO!
DON't GET AMERICANIZED TANTO POINTS!
I get it, they look cool. Technically, the point is stronger than other conventional blade types. But it's a horrible cutter, and the tanto point gets in the way of slicing. And ask yourself, do you need to be stabbing into cinder blocks every day? If not, don't go tanto.
So please, please, I beg of you, don't get a tanto.
Here, I'm going to copy and paste my usual answer for you:
Spyderco Tenacious, Manix 2, Persistence, Resilience, Byrd line, Delica, Endura, Military (I especially recommend a spyderco- steel is good and the opening hole, although strange looking, functions great)
Kershaw Leek, Chive, Skyline, OD-2, Junk yard dog, damascus skyline
Kabar Dozier
Cold Steel Voyager, Spartan, Recon 1, Pocket Bushman
SOG flash, twitch
Ontario Rat 1
Benchmade 710, Griptillian, Mini Griptillian, Ritter Grip
Emerson Commander
Sanrenmu 710 (bargain priced chinese knife, good little thing for around $13. This is if you really don't want to spend that much. Otherwise, ignore this.)

If he likes traditional style knives, look up Case knives. A stockman or whittler pattern is very useful, but these are in the range of 50-90 bucks. IMO, still worth it. (and they're made in the US with great steel, too.)

If you're going really cheap, look up rough rider folding knives. Will last quite a while, and the best knives I've seen come out of China. The difference between these and the American made ones are that the steel on the Americans' hold an edge better, and will last longer.

Most of the knives I listed will seem a bit pricey. IMO, it's worth it- I have to use my knife daily, and I all my suggestions are from experience (yes, I actually do spend that much on knives.)

PS: If you, by any chance, have a $300 budget, get him a Chris Reeve Sebenza. I know, you probably won't drop that much money on a knife, but I'm just putting it out there that the Sebenza is classic perfection.
You've never mentioned if you wanted a folder or a fixed blade.
If you want a fixed blade,

Fixed blades: ESEE Izula. Small, compact, around 35 euros. Great bang for the buck, search the web for it. It's crazy sharp, you can do custom paracord wrapped handles, look it up on google. The drawback is that its 1095 steel. While 1095 is very durable, keeps its edge for a long time, and can sharpen to a very fine edge, it is more prone to rust than any other steels. Don't let this worry you, as long as you're not using it near salt water environments, and remember to wipe the blade after use to make sure its dry.
KABAR BK2 and the BK9. Same steel, 1095. Keep it dry and keep it away from the ocean, it'll be fine. The BK2 is an all-around camp knife, the BK9 is the chopper. Great blades, still doesn't bust 80 euros.
Moras: Made in Sweden, dirt cheap. Around 8 Euros each. It's no chinese crap, however, and don't be fooled by their "innocent" look. They're hard use knives, with good choice of designs and steels. Look on ebay, they have both carbon steels, and stainless. It's always good to have an extra 1 or 2 on hand.
also take a peek at this site. I don't know if they ship to Europe, though, so look on the net for other suppliers. : http://www.ragweedforge.com/SwedishKnifeâ¦
Ontario knives: Cannot go wrong. Look at the SP-10, it's also carbon steel, but it's got a protective black coating, and it's 45 euros. If not, browse through their site. http://www.ontarioknife.com/catalog
You're going to need a European distributor, though.
KABAR D2: Takes after the classic Marine's knife, except in D2 steel. It's semi stainless, so it rusts less easily. If you look up KABAR D2 Destruction test, you can see some guy hammering it through several pipes and cinder blocks before it breaks. I'm holding mine right now, it's been through hell and back for the past 3 years. Pretty good. Expect around 100 euros.
Swamp Rat:. Research it yourself. They release a new knife every while and then, and the wait is wicked long. However, you can find some floating around ebay.
Busse: High quality stuff, you might not have enough money. As with swamp rat above, they are semi-custom producers and will have you waiting a long time. Try to snag one, though. I bought a Battle Mistress, my wife is PISSED.
Cold Steel: Alright, I'm a bit tired. I'll leave you to do research yourself. Look for the SRK, the Recon Scout. Also see their line of San-mai steels. The SRK San mai 3 is good, but pricy. It's got a good balance of rust resistance and edge retention. If you want a machete for clearing brush, look no further. Cold Steel ones are about 25 euros each and are the absolute best. The Recon Scout has my vote here. SK-5 steel has very good rust resistance. They use it in their lines.

Look at ESEE's line again, http://www.eseeknives.com/index2.htm

any cheap but decent Carribean vacation packages for under $2000 for a family of five?

We are looking to book a carribean vacation but are having trouble booking it online since the max usually you can book is about 3-4 people per room We are looking to go anytime between August 6-18 for about 7 days and are departing from Toronto.

Answer
You're going to have a difficult time finding anything in that price range, even though it's the low, hurricane season in the Caribbean. The airfare alone would probably be more than that. Don't think you could even do the platform tent camping at Maho Bay or Cinnamon Bay in St. John USVI for that.

Best bet would probably be a travel agent who has package tours. CheapCaribbean.com sometimes has good deals - don't know how reliable they are. Also could check TravelZoo.com or VacationsToGo.com.

Perhaps Caye Caulker [Belize], Roatan [Honduras], Cozumel [Mexico] or Riviera Maya [Mexico] would have something more-affordable.

What kind of tent should I buy?

Jade Orchi

We bought a pretty expensive tent at Walmart last year and it leaked when it rained (horribly), was hotter than all get out, and blew flat to the ground in a stiff wind. We are going to buy a new one this year and trash the other. Which tent should I buy or what features should I look for to combat rain, heat, and wind.

Thanks.

Answer
No, you did not buy an "expensive" tent at Walmart. Walmart does not sell any expensive, high-quality, lightweight tents. Walmart does sell cheap tents that can be effective for casual use IF you buy a strong seam sealer, like a silicone rubbery adhesive, and spread it across every seam and joint between different fabrics. Furthermore, the reason that your tent "blew flat" or contortioned is because you purchased a tent with cheap fiberglass poles that flex in the wind rather than break. Your existing tent is fine for car-camping in fairly pleasant weather. I even use one for certain car-camping outings when I want a little higher ceiling and am not concerned about weight. For backpacking, I have two $300 tents, a one-person and a two-person backpacking tent, weight respectively two pounds and four pounds, hub-design, low-profile, aluminum poles.

If you want a higher performance tent, then you will need to spend, depending on capacity and style, $300 to $1,000. Do not go cheap on a tent, since failure will end your vacation or force you to spend a lot more money on motels. Features that you need to consider ~ Rain protection: full-rain fly. Heat: adequate ventilation design. Wind: high-grade aluminum poles and a low-profile dome rather than a high-ceiling cabin tent or a very expensive four-season tent. You did not specify sleeping capacity. However, "we" implies a family, so I will offer links to several tents that may meet your criteria. Purchase a tent at least one-person larger than the specifications imply, unless you want a very tight fit. If heat and bugs are a significant problem, then consider also purchasing a screen room.

As best as I can figure from your description of necessary criteria, look at the Big Agnes Flying Diamond 6 Tent, $540, 19 pounds, 5' 6" ceiling height or Big Agnes King Creek 6 Tent, $470, 16.5 pounds, 6' ceiling height. If you want smaller and cheaper, Big Agnes Coulton Creek 4 Tent, $300, 9 pounds, 5' ceiling height. I own a Big Agnes Fly Creek UL-1 that holds up well in high-altitude tundra backpacking, $300, 2 pounds, 3' 2" ceiling height.

Where is a good place to float in Central Missouri?

We are trying to find a place to float/camp for my dad's birthday this year. We live in Kansas City and he dad lives in St. Louis. We are looking for a place around Columbia or the least amount of driving for all of us.

Answer
Really are not float-able rivers in the Columbia Area. Most of the good float streams are in the southern part of the state. There are many off Highway 44 such as the Current, Meremac, Huzzah and Courtois, These will be a short drive for you but a much longer drive from KC. We just recently went from St Louis to KC to Springfield/Branson and 44 back to St Louis with a stop at Bennett Springs. There isnt any short route from KC to Highway 44. We took Highway 7 to Highway 13 to 44 but it was a three hour drive. However, there is one place that does a guided kayak/canoe float on the Missouri river out of Rocheport which is along the Katy Trail. Its not your usual float trip but might be interesting. Mighty Mo Canoe Rental is the one who does this.

Is there anywhere you can legally camp out in your truck for a night in Colorado Springs?

krillzth

A buddy and I are going on a trip there, coming from Kansas, and we don't want to pay for 3 nights at a hotel because it is expensive. We only booked two nights. The third night we are just going to sleep, and head back home in the morning.

How to choose a family base camping tent?

I am planning to buy a family camping tent, what things should I consider?

Answer
1. Consider how many people will be sleeping in the tent and if you'll be requiring one or two tents to house everyone. Make sure you have enough room for everyone to be comfortable. Every tent has its dimensions specified on the package, listing how many people it will house and how big it is. If you're looking for roomy comfort, subtract the number of people the tent says it will hold by one or two.

2. Figure out what style of tent will best suit your needs. There are two basic types of tents: dome and cabin. While there are a variety of styles of both, each has its own advantages and disadvantages. A dome tent is easier to assemble, having only two poles for the tent and one for the top cover. Since it's shaped like a dome, you'll give up some space in its height. A cabin tent offers more room since it is built in a square shape, but because it has more poles, it can take longer to assemble and be heavier to carry. If you're looking to house more than four people comfortably and have only one tent, a cabin tent is probably the best option.

3. Consider what extra requirements you need in your tent to properly accommodate you and your group. Do you want an extra attached screen room or a tent with several rooms? Do you have a tall person in the pack that will want to stand up straight while inside the tent? Will you be spending large amounts of time inside the tent? All of these things need to be thought out before you buy a tent. There are many varieties of tents on the market that come at a variety of prices.

4. Think about the area where you will be setting up your base camp tent and what the weather will be like. If you'll be camping in a cold region, you don't want a tent that has a screened top with a liner that allows more air inside. You also don't want a tent that allows little ventilation if you're staying in a hot area.

5. Consider the camping experience of the people you're camping with. If you're a novice camper, you might want a tent that's easy to set up. Generally, the fewer poles you have to deal with, the easier it is to set up and take down and the lighter weight.

How were the "Internment Camps" during WW2 in the USA for the Japanese different from?

The concentration camps in Europe?

Answer
They relocated Japanese-Americans away from the coastal areas and into places in the Heartland like Iowa. There were actual houses and garden plots for the families, which is significantly different than the barracks that the extermination camps in Europe. The Japanese were allowed to work and earn a modest living, though they couldn't use telephones or have access to Western Union. It's fair to say they were under serious scrutiny, but they weren't physically harmed or under risk of death. There weren't armed guards or land mines around the camps, though there was a significant barrier with barbed wire. People lost their dignity in the camps and their civil rights were trod upon, but they didn't lose their lives or get separated from their loved ones.

What's the cheapest way to get ferry's and coaches around europe?

amazondebs

I'm a student and me and some of my friends are going to go round europe for a few weeks, camping in various places, whats the cheapest way to do this and I mean really cheap. We're literally just taking a tent and some clothing with us.

Answer
Early booking for the coach companies, Eurolines is most often mentioned: http://www.eurolines.com/
In the UK you can also use Megabus, can only be booked online:
http://uk.megabus.com/default.aspx
Other countries may also have cheap coach companies, but not in all countries the bus is the best option. I think you should try google for more companies.
Within France, the Netherlands and Belgium you will not find many or even any cheap coach options, but between these countries and from them to the rest of Europe you will find cheap bus/coach travel.

In some countries the train can be almost as cheap and have more options. In Germany there are special tickets for people traveling together on the slow trains, very cheap but not fast. More flexible than the bus though:
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en?newrequest=yes&protocol=http:&

A good site for train info is: http://www.seat61.com/

'Remember that farther east is mostly cheaper, as soon as you are beyond Germany, Switzerland and Austria and Italy.
Countryside and small towns are cheaper than capital cities, certainly when camping.
If you are from the UK you might be able to get a cheap flight to Eastern Europe for less than you would pay on the ferry to the continent.
http://www.skyscanner.net/ or a site like it.

If this is not cheap enough yet, you can try organized hitchhiking, this is a German site, there are more, Google can help you out: http://www.mitfahrzentrale.de/index.php?landnr=D&lang=GB
And in case you hit the bad weather jackpot, couch surfing:
http://www.couchsurfing.org/ or http://www.hospitalityclub.org/ and again there are more sites to be found.

What are some good eduactional or adventurous camps that are free?

Sexcii Mam

Just looking for a place to have fun in the summer and is low cost or the money comes from fund raising and donations. Please help and no negative comments.

Answer
I have no idea where you are, but if you were in UK I would suggest going to Sherwood forest, and takling a history book with you. There are information huts there, and the whole place is historical for the Robin Hood legend, you can make your own camp, go hiking, and pretend to be a part of the merry men.

If you are in USA, why not pick a story from history that you like and go to the local place where it is set- without knowing where you are it's a bit hard.

How can someone who hates camping make the most of it?

A friend invited me on a 3 night, 4 day camping trip with her and her family. I would really like to spend time with my friend, but I've never been much of an "outdoor girl". I like a nice hotel room over sleeping on the ground. That said, I need to get away and would really like to try something new. How do you make the most of a camping trip? What's the best way to sleep comfortably and avoid getting eaten alive by mosquitoes? Any hints, tips, or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Turn it into a glamping adventure by bringing all the comforts of home. The easiest way to do that is to use a recreational vehicle they can be rented for the day, the weekend, the week or all summer. These are a hotel on wheels basically and all campgrounds accommodate them.
http://www.cruiseamerica.com/?utm_source=adcenter&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=full

If that is not your thing then tenting can still be a clamping adventure but still just as costly for the first timer. You start with getting a spacious tent and then outfitting it with the state of the art air beds, warm fluffy sleeping bags and or bedding, and comfy camp chairs and a nice side table with a coleman lamp an indoor/outdoor rug by the door and you have a wonderful and comfortable set up.

Skeeters can be kept at bay the same way that you would in your own back yard and decorate your campsite to. You can set out citronella oil lanterns and candles and then use a deet based product on your clothing.

What kind of stuff do I need if I go camping?

amber

I'm planning a surprise camping trip for my boyfriend and I since he's never been. I have to plan early so that I cant budget all the things I need to buy for it over time. I haven't been camping since I was a kid so I forget all the things I'll need to bring. Obviously I need a tent, which I happen to have, and sleeping bags. What else should I bring? Also does anyone know any brands or specific sleeping bags with room for two people, or that can be zipped together? We will be car camping for sure so hauling in stuff isn't a problem, we have a truck. Thank you to anyone to answers :)

Answer
Use a checklist for the gear you need,
http://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/family-camping-checklist.html

Prepare for the season,
http://www.princeton.edu/~oa/winter/wintcamp.shtml

Choose a destination
http://www.totalescape.com/

Make reservations, some destinations get booked six months in advance, like national parks.
http://www.reserveamerica.com/
http://www.recreation.gov/
http://woodalls.com/

Buying camping gear during the off season will be a bit troubling as most places that carry it do so seasonally and what they have will be at full price and in limited quantity. Walmart would be the low price leader for the type of gear you need even though their prices would not be at their seasonal lowest They do have winter rated sleeping bags made by Coleman that would zip together. If you have a truck I suggest a camper shell at the minimum and you could shack up in the back of that. weather being no issue at all then.

Is camping a popular form of accomodation with backpackers in Malaysia and Phillippines?

best camping site in the philippines

best camping site in the philippines image

Answer
Not really.

There are a few camping sites in both Malaysia and the Philippines, such as Cameron Highlands (Malaysia) and Camp John Hay (the Philippines), but in general, camping is done with others, preferably with acquaintances from local camping enthusiasts.

In the Philippines, where I am now based, camping is fairly popular in the mountain resorts of the Cordilleras, as well as in the beaches throughout the Philippines. Indeed, "tent-living" is gradually becoming one of the "in"-stuff to do here. However, it is usually done only if you have a companion (preferably a local camping team).

can anyone tell me where I might get the Nikon D90 kit at the lowest price ?
