Well i am doing a massive research paper and i was just wondering what were the positive outcomes of the internment camps
what did the government gain from the interment camps?
Did it help to tip the favor of the war in the U.S direction?
Any economical advancements from it?
Who gained from the Japanese being in internment camps?

Answer
I've been to a couple of talks given by internment camp detainees and I just can't think of anything positive, sorry...nothing other than how we can learn from history and not imprison citizens on a massive scale like that again.

Who gained? The local people who lived nearby the business and homes that were abandoned by Japanese-Americans. These were taken over and those in the camps lost pretty much everything. A few of them had really good friends who watched over their property while they were gone but most have tragic stories.

Some people were so disillusioned with America due to that experience that even though they didn't speak Japanese or had ever been to Japan, they renounced their American citizenship. I can't ever imagine being in such a situation and I hope I never have to.
Tule Lake: http://www.tulelake.org/history.html

Some people were returned to war-devastated Japan. Can you imagine being dropped off in Hiroshima after the bomb? yeah, that sucks. Also, Japanese were taken from South America and interned in America. This was part of a hostage exchange America was doing but it resulted in the tragedy spreading outside our country to people not involved, which is another point in history we should not repeat. These Japanese descent Latin Americans were stripped of their home citizenship and once released from American camps were illegal aliens with nowhere to go to. They are not eligible for repatriations, even though some of them stayed in the US and became legal citizens. Imagine if you have some European blood, whatever country, take your pick, and they go to war and you are shipped over to Europe and placed in a camp and lose your American citizenship and now you're in a country illegally and you don't speak the language.
http://www.opiniojuris.org/posts/1171900979.shtml

Of course, it wasn't just Japanese-descent in the camps but that was whom Executive Order 9066 was ordered at. It's a dark place in history and I used to have a copy of that order on my living room wall as a reminder: never again.

I highly suggest if you have the time to get in touch with the Japanese American National Museum and they have a good research library on this topic. Although, you might have to go in person and if you're not in the Los Angeles area it will be difficult. There may be other smaller Japanese American museums, exhibits, or research libraries in your area.

How likely is it that I will get stationed overseas after A school for master at arms?

flyxonxdre

Hi I am leaving for boot camp in a month and my fiance is concerned that i will be stationed overseas after my Master at Arms A school. Is there a likely possibility of this happening? No rude answers please, because i would just would like some information.

Answer
Yes there is a chance you can be stationed overseas in a place like Japan, Guam, Spain, Italy, Greece, etc.. With this it means that there is a good chance that if you do get married she will not be able to join you at all for you were Single when you got the orders and the Navy can require you to be E4 or higher for the orders to be accompanied. But then again you might be stationed stateside.

My finace is in the Navy and is graduating out of bootcamp on Aug 18. I never traveled out of louisiana, so really don't know what to do as far as planning this. Could someone help please?

Answer
My niece just graduated from boot camp 2 weeks ago. After Pass and Review all graduates will be allowed off of the base for the first time since arriving. They can't go more than 50 miles from the base. That pretty much leaves Chicago. It seemed like every recruit ended up at the mall of all places. I guess mall deprivation runs rampant at boot camp! Be aware that they cannot bring cell phones back onto the base, and in fact they will and should be aware of exactly what they are allowed to bring back before they leave. They are going to have to report back to base by 9pm Fri. and if they are one of the lucky ones not getting shipped out Sat. morning they can be off base from 8AM--8pm Sat. As far as sightseeing, be prepared for crowds both Friday and Sat. at all of the major tourist sites. Navy Pier has great dining, Brookfield Zoo is a really great zoo, and Chicago has some of the best museums, particularly The Museum of Science and Industry. Please check out Great Lakes Online website, it will give you lots of information on lodging, and many of the hotels closest to the base offer discounts for family and friends coming for graduation and also offer a shuttle service to the base. Chicago will be hot, hot, hot in August so dress comfortably, and have a great time.

Are there any hotels in or around Baton Rouge, Louisiana where you can check in before the age of 21?

Lisa

I'm trying to find a hotel to stay at tonight, but most of them say you have to be 21 or older to check in and I'm only 20. Does anyone know of a place where you can check in to a hotel at 20 years old?

Answer
Ooohh!
what are you up to? lol

sorry, never been to USA, so dunno.

Although, when I was only 16... me n fella went on hols to a holiday camp wher you had to be 18. We lied about my age on the form and didn't get caught.... well, until some idiot stole someones purse and happened to disappear when running past our caravan. I just happened to go to the loo at the same time so security heard the door bang.

Half hour later, the police turned up and ripped the caravan apart, trying to find the purse.... so we had to come clean about my age to the police.

They found the purse the next day over a fence near our caravan, the police believed us and the caravan site ignored my real age. lol

My friend and I want to go camping near/in the PA Grand Canyons (not the actual grand canyons). We don't have much money at all and don't want to stay in the State Parks which is 15-19 dollars a night. I would like somewhere for free or less than 10 bucks a night. We don't want to hike anywhere to camp. We just want to park and camp. Thanks in advance!

Answer
If you're that strapped for funds, perhaps you should delay your trip. Just pitching a tent and camping out isn't smart. Any legitimate campground will charge you at least that much per night. Here's a link:http://www.allcampgrounds.com/blog/?tag=pennsylvania-grand-canyon

Places to go camping in florida or pennsylvania?

kristin22

Anyone who knows of good places to go camping in PA or Fla, please let me know of some nice places we are planning a trip in Fla and then PA, thanks!

Answer
I'm going to agree with some of the answers that have been given out already. Worlds End State Park, Leonard Harrison State Park / Colton Point (Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania) and Hyner View all have magnificent views, and best of all, the first 2 have waterfalls nearby.

Pa State parks website: http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/ for SP campground information.

I would personally recommend camping out near Ricketts Glen, but the falls trail is closed from the recent flooding 2 weeks ago. Could be weeks to months to reopen the trails.

The poconos area is nice for rolling mountains and again, waterfalls.

I don't know much about anything other than the Northeastern part of the state yet, but if you care to see some pictures, I'll include my website: http://www.nepaphotographer.com

What qualities and features should I look for when shopping for a tent?

large family camping tents
on Big Agnes King Creek 4 4 Person Tent
large family camping tents image

Mrs.Fine

I love to camp, but my poor old tent has worn out and it is time to purchase a new one. There are alot more features available now, and I want to know which ones are worth the extra money, and which ones just add more weight to my gear. It was a little overwhelming shopping at the Bass Pro shop last weekend.

Also, where is the best place to find a good deal on these tents? I only have a family of four, so an extra large tent is not needed. Just one that is relativley simple to set up.

Thanks for your input!

Answer
First, get a name brand tent. Almost everyone I know who has purchased a tent from a discount store has had problems with it very soon. Not only is this bad economics but can ruin a camping trip.

The tent that is right for you will depend on your own use and priorities. If you are car camping, you will likely accept weight and volume to have a comfortable tent. If you are bike touring, you probably want as small a tent as you can get.

Here's a few things to consider:

Self supporting - The more self supporting a tent is, the less you have to rely on stakes, but the more likely it is to have more poles and more weight. A classic pup-tent for example is simple, has only basic center poles, but needs good ground to steak it down.

Ventilation - Very important if you will be in warm weather especially. I find that having cross ventilation (two opposite doors for example) give much better ventilation than the percent of the tent body that is netting. ( I find that if the netting is completely surrounded by the fly, you won't get much wind movement anyways)

Mosquito netting - get the smaller no seeum netting. It's helpful if you can adjust this and the door rainflies without having to open the tent door (thus letting all the bugs in)

Zipper - get one with a substantial zipper on the doors. This is a point of failure on many bargain brand tents.

In my outdoor program I purchase Eureka Timberline Tents which are the mainstays of many outdoor programs. I think they are one of the best values you will find in a tent. They are well built, have good zippers, have excellent cross ventilation and are easy to set up with poles that are unlikely to break. You can adjust the ventilation from inside the tent. They are great for most general needs, but would not be my choice for activities where light weight is needed such as bike touring or light-weight backpacking. They will make more noise than a dome tent in a wind. A good source is Campmore. They also stock spare parts such as poles should you ever need them. Personally, I find myself using this tent most of the time unless I'm in the wind or snow I use a Eureka dome tent, and if I want to go light, I use a small
Sierra Designs hoop tent instead.

Help preserve your tent by shaking or sweeping out all the debris each morning when you take it down. This will make the floor last much longer. If you are not overly concerned about weight, cut a plastic ground cloth to fit, which you can always leave out if you don't want it. (Campmore sells these very cheaply to fit the timberline)

P.S. - the Timberline has a 4-person version, but it is room for sleeping only. If you are car camping for long periods of time, you may want something more roomy for a family of four.

How much does it cost to camp in the campgrounds near lake wenatchee in Washington State?

My friends and I want to go camping in July and I need to know how much it costs to use a campground for a few days. There will be at least 8 of us maybe more. Do they charge per person? per night?

Answer
The park has 155 tent spaces, 42 utility sites, one dump station, seven restrooms and 16 showers. In addition, the park provides two ADA campsites. Call (509) 763-3101 for information.

The south campground (sites 1 through 100) has parking pads 30 to 40 feet in length, with only two pull-through sites. Larger RVs and fifth-wheelers should use the north campground (sites 101 through 197) which includes42 large pull-through utility sites.

Maximum tents: one family tent or up to two 2-3 man tents.Maximum vehicles: two per site (additional vehicles may park in overflow areas).

To reserve a campsite, call (888) CAMPOUT or (888) 226-7688.

From Nov. 15 through April 1, winter camping is allowed for tent and RV campers in a designated day-use area, adjacent to the beach. There are no hook-ups available. All north campground camping and trailer dump access are closed in the winter, but the south campground will remain open. A heated restroom and hot showers are located near the camping area.

Group Accommodations:

The park offers a group camp that accommodates 20 to 50 people. Only tent camping is allowed in the group camp. Fees vary with size of the group. To reserve, call (888) CAMPOUT or (888) 226-7688.

Check-in time is 2:30 p.m., and check-out time is 1 p.m.Quiet hours are from 10 p.m. to 6:30 a.m.Engine-driven electric generators may be operated only between the hours of 8 a.m. and 9 p.m.Length of stay: You may stay up to ten consecutive days in any one park during the summer; the stay limit is extended to 20 days between Oct. 1 and March 31.

Camping fees are usually $12 for 1st vehicle; $9 for 2nd vehicle. I would certainly call first and set a reservation as they fill up fast.

I am planning on moving to Dallas or a surrounding area. Any advice on places to live?

best camping places near dallas
on Dallas Skyline From The Area Of The Trinity River
best camping places near dallas image

aeaustin85

I need a nice, affordable, safe apartment. Roommates are an option.

Answer
well right now it would be best to live in the suburbs, but you will need a car if you move into the suburbs of fort worth. Because the pub transpo doesn't go into those areas. however you can catch the train to dallas and most of the suburbs of dallas have pub transpo.

cheap and safe in fort worth and surrounding areas ( 30 mins from dallas)
Mansfield extremley cheap town homes two bed rooms are 600 and you have a backyard they are nice in a quiet area. the apartments are expensive though 650 for as one bedroom but it's spacious and luxurios with many amenities.

DON"T move to Arlington if you are going to live in an apartment it's a nice city to party in but it's dangeorous unless you stay on campus UTA but still two people get killed on campus a year and countless other abducted and stabbed and robbed.
Euless and grapevine are nice areas with cheap apartments. one bedrooms in euless range from 440- 520. Euless is really quite.
Centreport area. Five minutes from DFW airport quiet but the noise of planes, but I grew up there and it really doesn't bother you. one bedrooms in centre port range from 470- 650. In grapevine one bedrooms range from 550-700. but they are very luxiourous and spacious as well. grapevine is a very rich area.

Dallas and surrounding areas
Dallas is wayyyy more expensive than tarrant county and surrounding areas.
Irving near DFW area port in the center of dallas and fortworth It's a good central location. If you live in an apartment stay on the north side of Irving. Unless you live on the southside of valley view road 10 mins from centre port. In irving the prices vary the lowest being 380 ( I wouldn't recommend living there though, it's not unsafe but you can have better quality for a little more) to 1500 for a one bedroom. Irving is where the Cowboys ( football team NFL) practice and live so the closer you get to them the more expensive but the again it's very luxourious you get your money's worth. The area near the football camp is called las colinas and valley ranch it is still actually Irving though, It is the North side of Irving.
Grandpraire
it's okay in grandpraire. the one bedrooms start at 550-700. be careful in this area there are lots of sex offender in Grandpraire for some reason, but still the crime rate isn't that bad, only if you move into the worng apartments. so if they don't have a gate and the rent is cheap just say no!

Mesquite/Addison/Plano/ North Dallas/ Uptown/ Frisco
This are good areas near dallas ans in dallas. but they are expensive and the apartments are small in comparison to the other places I've listed. Unless you want to overpay for hosing let these places be the last place you go unless you have to be in a very metropolitan urban chic area. then this would be the only places I recommend for you.
Uptown is nice very urban life. near downtown, convience , one bedrooms can go from 1000- .... because some of them are condos and penthouses so the price range can reach triple digits. you may be able to get a one bedroom for 800. dallas and surronding areas are notorious for slashing rent prices dramatically but then rising them after you lease is up. but the special are monthly so its a right place right time thing.. in the spring and winter the prices of apartments fall in this area so although I quoted prices you may get lower prices if they have a special you can only get those prices if you come in though.
Forgot Cedar Hill nice area developing most apartments are new ( built with in the last five years) metropolitan-suburban area safe. Not far from downtown.

How do I find a place with the things I enjoy?

Madison

It's kind of hard for me to really ask my question in that thing so I'll explain. I'm not really into a lot of activities. I like technical theatre stuff such as lighting, sound, make up, costume, props. I prefer lighting and stage make up. I also enjoy writing. I want to find something to do that involves the things I love and other people. Like camps, programs, clubs. Something of that nature. Just something social I can do in my area. I live in Arlington Texas, so anything in the Dallas/Arlington/Fort Worth area would be good. Or if you know of a website that would help me find something. I should also add that I am 15. And I would like something I could do over the Summer or during the Fall. Thank you,

Answer
I think the best thing to do would be to first find a local theater production company. Maybe a youth theater group, community theater, or kids acting camp. Nothing serious, just something near by. To find these you could ask local community centers and theaters. Find a few and give them a call. Explain to them that you really enjoy working backstage with the technical aspects of theater. Ask them if they'd be willing to let you work backstage with the set, lighting, sound, etc. I do community theater and most of the people working backstage are parent volunteers. They work on building the set, changing scenes, helping with costumes and props, etc. Since it's around summer break, there are probably tons of production companies and camps, that would be more than happy to have you around. Just make a few calls and see what you can do! Good luck :)

How to plan for trip to Australia?

good camping places melbourne
on Best Camping Places for 2008 Daytona Bike Week? - Harley Davidson ...
good camping places melbourne image

Will D

I am toying with the idea of packing up a backpack and moving from the U.S. to Australia. I want to experience a different life with new people and new places. I think this would be during the summer in Australia and I would be exploring the West; is this plan feasible? What do I need? What should I expect?

I will be graduating from high school soon and I don't want to go to college right away.
Also if this "living-off-the-land" thing doesn't work, how expensive are rental properties in Australia; how is their economy and job-less rate?

Thanks

Answer
yes, it is a feasible plan. prepare yourself for some very hot weather though (35+ celcius). the further north you go, the hotter it will become. if you are coming for some time i would recommend exploring the rest of australia as well, not just the west. Western australia is very beautiful, but you would be missing out on some fantastic attractions on the east coast (eg the great barrier reef, sydney, byron bay etc) not to mention other lovely parts of australia such as adelaide and melbourne.
you will probably need a visa, depending on how long you plan to stay. bring plenty of sunscreen, loose, warm-weather clothing, and your sense of humor! be prepared to do a fair bit of traveling around - the towns are quite far apart, especially on the western side.
not quite sure what you mean by 'living off the land'... you will definitely not want to be camping or anything if there is a heatwave! rentals can be found for a reasonable price, however since you wont be here all that long and you are from another country, land-lords may be reluctant to rent to you. backpacker hostels such as the YHA hostels provide cheap share accommodation that could be right for you.
as for the jobless rate etc, we have done much better than a lot of other places around the world, our unemployment rate has actually been going down over the last few months and the economy is recovering from the GEC. Travelers such as yourself often find short-term jobs grape-picking or working in restaurants.
anyway, sorry to make this so long! best of luck with your trip.

EDIT: i would just like to point out that one of the other answers here gives a misleading idea about australia... a 2 bedroom place in the city suburbs of melbourne/adelaide/perth is NOT going to be 5000 a month unless you are right in the CBD or it is very fancy and brand new. A 3 bedroom house in Adelaide would be about 300-400 a week (we do rent by the week). also, eating out here is relatively cheap! you can get a GOOD meal at a nice restaurant for about $60-$70 inc drinks etc. the living standard here is high, but it does not have to be expensive. of course, there is an expensive option as there is everywhere else, but you can get by on a very minimal income and still be comfortable. just thought i would point this out!!

General Info on making a new start in Phoenix, AZ?

best camping places in upstate ny image

WakeUpCall

Hi everyone! I am a 32 year old who is considering moving to Phoenix after living my whole life in Upstate NY. Just a few things: 1. I never finished college and while I've remained consistently employed, my work background is all over the map. How attainable is work in Phoenix, particularly with my education handicap? I know that the city is growing by leaps and bounds and that unemployment is around 3% (being from NY, that's an incredible statistic!) so I have high hopes! 2. Any tips on what towns offer affordable apartments? From the preliminary research I've done, it looks like $800 is the starting point for basic dwellings.

Any comments, insight, toughlove would be appreciated! THanks!

Answer
Great question! My finace and I moved here from Michigan a little over a year ago, and we love it! We are in our twenties, so our major puch to move so far from our families was work, which we had no trouble finding once we got here. We both work for American Express, a really great company. Neither of us have a completed degree, and my finace didn't even have much computer skills. They pay well and offer good benefits. We live in North Phoenix, not too over populated yet, and the traffic is not nearly as bad as down town. We rent a modest sized apartment, about 1000 sq ft for about $830 a month.

The biggest shock for me when I got here was how clean the city was. I know there is air polution, but I don't see it as bad as the previous person mentioned. Compared to Michigan, the roads are wonderful, and you can see your tax dollars being put to good use.

Jobs are plentiful, you just want to make sure the companies you apply with do not employ illegal workers, that can really drive down your wages. With most companies who employ illegals, they usually won't offer any benefits.

I have never been to New York, although I would love to visit someday, but I'm sure you will notice a considerable difference in almost every aspect of life here compared to living in the east. One thing to do your reasearch on is the heat. If you don't handle it well, this may not be the place for you. If you love hiking, sight seeing and camping, Arizona offers it all. Another great thing about living in Phoenix is that the landscape is always changing. You can drive two hours north of Phoenix to Flagstaff to get relief from the summer heat and enjoy the green that you will surely miss from home. We recently took a trip back to Michigan and was shocked by all the green everywhere. You really take it for granted when the city you live in is completly brown!

All in all, for the reasons you mentioned above, I think you would love it here. Great opportunities, beautiful landscape, and wonderful people. I hope this helps! Good luck!

Where is a good place to go camping in central NJ area?

Jack

I have a lot of experience camping, I just want to know a good place that is deep in the woods to get away from everything. Somewhere peaceful. Not some cheesy scout campsite or park.

Answer
That's very difficult to find in NJ, particularly in central NJ.

In western/northern NJ you have 72 miles the Appalachian Trail. Camping is only permitted in the provided shelters (or nearby/within view, if the shelter is full), and only for one night per location.

There are some nice and relatively separated family campsites in Stokes State Forest, also in northern NJ.

In southern NJ, the Pine Barrens offers some nice campsites off the beaten trail. Many of these are sparsely populated in the Fall. There are even two sites, Mullica and Lower Forge, that are hike-in or canoe-in only.

If you want more remote/secluded camping you'll need to travel to upstate NY or western PA.

Answer
it could be causeing spikes in the pressure
try a new supply line and ballcock (both easy ro replace)
if the problem persists then I would recommend getting a pressure gauge with a high low indicator on it to see what the max pressure is
if it exceeds 70psi I would recommend a pressure reducing valve

where can i get the right cylinder tent stove?

Q. i want to buy a cylinder stove for camping. one that goes inside the tent. good for cooking, and keeping things warm. all the ones i have looked at are in a wall tent. i just have a good old family camping tent without a hole in the top for the chimney.

do i need a wall tent for a cylinder stove?
is there a specific type of cylinder stove i can purchase that does not require a stove?

Answer
The cylinder tent stoves are designed for wall tents with proper venting and heat a tent by radiating heat from it. All the fumes are exhausted out the chimney. A regular walmart type of tent would not work with it. Also using fuel powered heaters in tents are dangerous they produce carbon monoxide gas and burn up oxygene, the combination will kill you. there are plenty of ways to stay warm through proper equipment, insulation and diet here is a link to winter camping info,

Answer
I don't know what state you live in or if it is warm...but here is my suggestion.

There is a wonderful place in West Virginia called Ace Adventure Center that is a great inexpensive vacation. I am enclosing the website and they will send you a brochure. They offer whitewater rafting, camping (cabins, tents, or bring your own), horses, hiking, biking. Just about everything. The best part is that you can plan your own trip and the costs. I strongly suggest it. It is family friendly and you can bring your congregation if you like.

Any suggestions on camping sites (not RV but tents) in/near DC area (Virginia, Maryland)?

AtypicalHa

Any suggestions/recommendations on sites where one could set up a tent for a weekend. Somewhere with nice scenery and a little bit of history but not too far from the city center. I took a look at some websites but there's just too much to choose from. I'm hoping for some suggestions to narrow down my choices.

Thanx

Answer
I would be happy to give you some suggestions. My family and I just went this summer for a two-week trip to Washington DC, and we stayed at two campgrounds during our visit.

Before we went I did some pretty extensive research to try and find us the closest campground to the city as we planned on going back and forth daily.

The three campgrounds that are closest to DC are all in Maryland and are:

Cherry Hill Park: http://www.cherryhillpark.com/
This one is supposed to be the closest one to DC, and very nice as well, but we did not stay at it so I can't tell you exactly how long it takes or what it is like. The only reason we did not stay there was because they did not have enough room for us for the entire two+ weeks we were going to be there.

Capitol KOA: http://www.capitolkoa.com/
We stayed here the last ten days of our trip. Typical of a KOA, it was very busy, but the tent sites were set back towards the woods. You didn't say if you are bringing kids, our kids loved the activities there, and Jennifer, the activities director, is a down-to-earth nature-lover so all of the activities had a nature theme to them, such as leave no trace, nature hikes, leaf identification, etc. There is a nature trail on the premises. It was about 35-40 minutes for the commute between here and DC, although they do provide transportion either into DC or to the metrostation if you prefer.

This campground was closer to Baltimore for us, than to DC.

The third campground, which is where we spent our first week of vacation is Duncan's Family Campground.

http://www.duncansfamilycampground.com/

This is a former KOA so the layout is similar, but far quieter, homier and more rustic. There were also many activities here and the staff was very warm and friendly.

This campground was much closer to DC for us than the Capitol KOA was, taking us 20-35 minutes, depending on traffic, to get there.

It was repeatedly recommended to us to not drive in DC and take the Metro. Based on our experience, especially on the weekends, we were able to drive in and get free parking right on the Mall. If you end up having to pay for parking, it will probably cost you close to what you would have spent for a family to go down on the Metro anyway.

In addition, all three of the campgrounds I mentioned provide some form of transportation to DC and to the Metrostations. The only disadvantage of that, however, is that you are on their schedule for your sightseeing hours.

There are also some state parks in the area, but again, my understanding was that they were much farther out of the area then the campgrounds I mentioned, so your daily commute into the city and back might be a little longer.

If you are interested, I blogged about our entire DC trip, which includes the historic sites we saw, our commutes back and forth, and about the campgrounds and what we did while we were there. You can find that at:

http://www.your-camping-guidebook.com/Camping-Tips-blog.html

If you have any other questions about camping in the area, feel free to let me know. Otherwise, have a great time!

Does anyone know any good camping spots in Northern California?

Helpful Ha

I'm looking for a camp site to go fishing and camping along a river in Northern California. I'm planning to go with my girlfriend and 2 other couples and none of us have really gone camping before so it would be nice if it wasn't too rugged and out there. We are from the bay area so we were thinking of someplace near Sacramento. The location is pretty flexible, I just don't want to drive to the Oregeon border.

Can anyone give me some popular titles or books that take place in New England during the fall or winter? Thanks.

Answer
Russell Banks - Affliction

Richard Russo - Nobody's Fool

Both of these books are dominated by a New England winter. Both write of New England in other works as well, some fall some winter, but these two works are dominated by the season.

Oh and one for the fantasy camp

Julian May's Galactic Milieu series takes place mostly in New England and has number of pivotal scenes focused around winter including at least one telekinetic enhanced motorcycle race on ice.

What is the cheapest way to visit England for someone who isn't comfortable with staying in a hostel?

Contessa

How do two adults and two teenagers travel to England, inexpensively, without staying in a hostel?

Answer
ok, well before you totally discount it, there are some which are very nice, and since you can stay in a family room, or pair of double rooms, in a castle, or beautiful manor house, give it another think...
http://www.yha.org.uk/ one of the castle hostels~ http://www.yha.org.uk/hostel/st-briavels

you could also email and negotiate prices with b&bs. ive knocked prices down by skipping breakfast, which means they can sleep in : ) its actually reduced the rate by a fair amount.

camping is super cheap, and you can buy kit here or bring your own over. public transport is good into cities, and variable in the countryside. i just stayed at a spectacular place in the countryside; new shower block, beautiful farm, 4 miles from the sea. £5 a night for utter bliss, and i was completely alone : ) the smaller places are cheaper, and quieter. http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/

best of all, and utterly free ~home swopping. you let a family stay in your place, you stay in theirs. my parents did it a few times when we were small as it ment we'd have places ok for kids to stay in, with tons of toys and whatnot. we also had our cats, rabbits etc fed, though the dog went to kennels. we got their car for free, too, and they had ours. there are loads of sites doing it, all over the world.
obv, it means you can self cater.
there are loads, this is one run by a major news paper. http://www.guardianhomeexchange.co.uk/
you pay a small fee to register, then pay only for flights! take a look and see what's on offer : )

Where is a good secluded spot to camp in the northeast?

I want to go camping and do it right. I want a secluded place, so I don't have to deal with kids or idiots. I'd like a place where I can have a small fire. It seems like campsites have wi-fi and water and electricity at its sites...none of that for me. I want to get away. Where can I go?!?!?! CT,NY,RI area

Answer
Adirondack high peaks in northern NY, althought there are tons of rules there (many of them really stupid) so you may need to do some research to find a place allowing fires.

Any Advice on a great vacation in the NY Tri-State area?

BroadwaySo

I need a family vacation spot that is inexpensive, but comfortable for a week. If you know of great places to go, hotels to stay in, houses to rent and great shops and restaurants, please share those in your answer!

Answer
Saratoga Springs, NY has both ritzy and down to earth hot spots. There are a ton of historical sites (free), two very family friendly horse racing tracks (both flatrack and harness track) with general admission at a low price. There are amazing parks downtown and a beautiful "main drag" called Broadway lined with beautiful buildings and eclectic shops and eateries. There is a little bit of everything from old record shops to Brueggers Bagel Bakery. The architecture in this town is breathtaking. Just driving around looking at the beautiful old victorian homes could take all afternoon. The Ben & Jerry's sealed the deal for me though! (just a block off of broadway) There is an amusement park called Great Escape about an hour away to the north, and you are only about an hour away from Albany for tours of the NY state capital. And check out Sharp's Cozy Cottages, adorable little places for rent just a minute or two outside of downtown in a town called Gansevoort. If you want to go the camping/hiking route, theres nothing better than the Adirondack and Catskill mountain ranges. Sacandaga lake comes very higly recommended, small town atmosphere and one of the most pristine lakes in the NE. Check out this website, I can't even list all the cool things about the Saratoga area. PS, if you go in the fall, around late Sept to early Oct., the racetracks wont be open, but you will see the prettiest foliage you have ever seen.

Looking for a place where I can go primitive camping (open camping/dispersion camping) within driving distance (less than 5 hours) in the New York City area. Anyone know of a National Forest or park that allows this that they would recommend? One with great hiking would be ideal. I'm looking to go in the fall when the leaves start the change. Many thanks.

Answer
you can get to many places within a 5 hour radius of nyc...
in new york state you can go to the adirondacks or catskills (the catskills are closer but the ADK's are way more magnificent)...

since you're willing to drive up to 5 hours you can also get to places within new england such as vermont and new hampshire..in NH the area around mt washington and the presidential range has the best mountain scenery in the east

...as far as specific camp istes you'll have to do your own research depending on if you want to car camp, backpack or canoe camp and depending on how difficult you want

Just got a camper and looking for good places to camp with kids within 3 hours of Hartford CT?

Cheryl P

The kids are 4 and 7. I have tried to find reviews of campgrounds in New England/New York/New Jersey but have not found any good sites. Most have so few reviews I cannot get a good comparison. I would like to find a campground with lots of things we can do (biking swimming playgrounds etc) that is very family friendly and possibly has some inexpensive activities in the area such as wineries, kid museums or outdoor adventures.

Answer
Catskills State Park in NY is only 2 1/2 hours from Hartford. It's GORGEOUS and there's a lot to do in the area. We love Woodstock (no hippies now). There are some wineries (not at the level of California, but nice) and plenty of outdoor activities. As far as family friendly - you can't get more family friendly. Families go there every year in the summer. There are some links below that might help-

Where a good place to camp in Southern California allowing to build fires and allow paintball?

Belisario

Some friends and me can't choose between forest, beach, but still don't know of any good places to camp for the summer.

Answer
Paint ball is not an approved activity in or at city, county beaches, state, national forest or BLM lands. There are many privately operated parks that have paintball activities on a pay as you go plan. Any regular campground allows the use of fires with in seasonal limits. Dispersed camping areas in the forests and deserts would be an option for paint ball wars however if Johnny law catches you he could confiscate your toys. Good Luck

How can i teach soccer/football in the usa?

I'm English and have passed my F.A coaching level one grade. I want to teach youth soccer in the USA as i have just finished my A levels and do not want to go to uni. I also wish to make football coaching a full time profession and therefore this would be great experience. I looked at the Camp America site but i don't think they do football. Anyone have any ideas or alternatives? Cheers
Thanks bellow, btw I live in London, England. Anyone else got any ideas?

Answer
It is easy to coach Soccer in the US. You just go to your local youth soccer program and sign up as a coach. They do a background check etc and bingo you get to coach a season. But that is recreational soccer so you will probably only get a couple of real soccers players and of the rest about half of them might be playing for the first time. You would get to meet other local coaches and maybe move to a travel team (which is one step above rec soccer...kids have to try-out for the team). But that assumes you already live in the US.....and they are no-pay volunteer positions.

However if you are actually living in the UK and want to know about opportunities to coach over here then here are some sites that might give you some ideas. (Don't get too excited I think the ones that speak of abroad are abroad from the US).

It is possible a high school might be open to hiring a British youth soccer assistant coach/coordinator so you could just do some web searches and find some schools that have good soccer programs and see if they might be able to offer you something.

You will need a visa. I don't think short term educational visas are that hard to get. So if you are in the UK you might want to contact the US embassy in London both to ask about the visa situation and perhaps see if they have any ideas. (Making your own progress on a visa also be a good way of letting any one you contact in the US know you are serious).

Is there anyway of finding out who land belongs to in the UK?

XemogurlX

Im going camping and want to find out where im planning to camp, who that land belongs to. Is there any website which will tell me?

Answer
Hi there. Apart from designated camp sites, you have to ask permission to camp on any other land. This ownership information is not readily available in advance. The rural population is generally sensitive to illegal camping. If you turn up somewhere and decide to camp, you must make an effort to knock on doors and check out who owns the place. Farmers and landowners might not mind, but you can bet you'll be one who wakes to find Farmer Giles pointing a shotgun at you saying "Get off moy land!".

What to do in Alsace and/or the Vosges Mountains with a family?

Teflonmon

I am going to spend 5 nights in a hotel near Colmar mid June and would like to know what there is to do in Alsace, the Vosges mountains and the surrounding area (Germany and Switzerland) for a young family (our son is nearly 5 years old).

We do have a particular in swimming in lakes and rivers so any suggestions that include that would be welcomed.

We will be hiring a car and I would like to know whether we can easily park in places like Ribeauville and Riquewihr. If not, what would be the best way to get to these kind of places.

Thank You.

Answer
Congratulations on selecting Alsace as your holiday destination. On a recent trip I was talking to the owner of a Michelin starred restaurant in Riquewhir who said that very few visitors came from the UK or the USA to the region. You are in for a treat: so many ravishing old villages and little towns with gorgeous houses dripping with flowers from spring to Autumn, quaint churches and monuments, and masses of folklore. The main activities, besides exploring these are walking and cycling. For people interested in wine, the Route du vin is the big draw, and for those who care about what happened under Hitler, the Strutof concentration camp is an eye opener.
http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attraction_Review-g187071-d247511-Reviews-Le_Struthof_concentration_camp-Alsace.html

There are spectacular waterfalls to walk up to but swimming in rivers is not recommended especially with a young child. Here are beaches which are safer:
http://www.tourisme67.com/en/open-air-bathing-places.htm

With regard to parking, that is easy in Colmar but smaller places like Riquewhir, Eguisheim, Ribauvillé have parkings just outside and it is a very short walk to the main attractions. The main tourist spots have a little train on wheels that takes you round the main streets but some of the finest things to see are often on narrow little streets than are only pedestrian. There are very few crossings across the Rhine and bear in mind that you will be driving on relatively small roads and not on parkways. Five nights actually means four days and you will not have the time to go to Germany or Switzerland as it involves a long drive and would not be worth your while. Strasbourg, with its magnificent cathedral, canals and the superb Petite France area, in itself takes a whole day and with a small child you will not be able to move very fast whatever you do. Likewise, the visit to the Haut-Koenigsbourg, which is an absolute must, requires at least half a day.
Your hotel will have tourist information and local maps, and there is a tourist information office in each important location that will provide you with brochures, etc...
Meanwhile If you look at the official Office du Tourisme website and select the headings that interest you (wild parks, animal kingdoms, folk museum, etc...) you will find a great deal of information already and can plan in advance.
http://www.tourisme-alsace.com/en/
There is a site map when you scroll down to the bottom of the page.
Whilst you are in Riquewhir, take your child to tour Kate Wohlfahrt's Christmas shop: it is pure magic even if you do not buy anything.
http://www.wohlfahrt.com/24-1-ferie_de_noel_in_riquewihr_france
Have a great time and I hope that you get a good view of the storks nesting and flying as they will be will be back from Africa when you get there.
