You can check your state's Park Service website, The Bureau of Land Management website, and the US Forest Service website for areas that allow dispersed camping. This is generally free (you may have to acquire a permit to camp in certain areas or to burn fires) to do. Dispersed camping is when you camp outside of designated campgrounds. Good Luck and Enjoy! Dispersed camping is the best way to go, provided you locate the right spot.

Perris Lake in Riverside Co, Silverwood Lake, Lake Castaic, Lake Arrowhead, Big Bear, El Dorado Regional Park in Long Beach... there are many lakes in the southland that you can camp at. Just do a little research on line. Start with parks.ca.gov and search from there.
