What are some great places to stay in Kentucky?

My family is trying to find a good place to have a HUGE family vacation. There will be approximately 30-60 people going on the trip, and we're trying to find ANYTHING that will be fun for a huge group.
It'll be somewhat of a reunion, by the way.

We were thinking about something called "Fontana" in one of the southern states, & most of us are from GA. However, I'd like to go to a different state, so basically, does anyone know some fun places to go to in Kentucky? Thanks!

Answer
We had a family reunion at The Kentucky Horse Park. There were 20 there, infants to adults. I was a kid so I don't know how they arranged it. I do reember there was a lot of open green space by our picnic shelter so we could run around.
The Kentucky Horse Park

Also check out the state parks. Kentucky's state parks are some of the best in the nation. Many have lodges, cottages, or camping and a wide range of recreational facilities.

Cumberland Falls, one of the only 2 places globally you can see a Moonbow, is 90 mi. south of Lexington

Where are some good places to camp with kids in KY?

Suzanne

We will have a 4, 7, & 8 year old with us. We are planning to camp in a tent. I would be interested in any suggestions for this or places that have cabins. Thank you!

Answer
Any of the State Park or Army Corps campgrounds would be great. Carter Caves State Park is one of my favorite places to camp. The kids will love the caves if you opt to take a tour. Carter Caves as well as nearly all of the state parks (http://www.parks.ky.gov) have modern bath houses and play grounds. Have fun!

Where is the best place to stay in Yosemit during January?

I'm focused on location over ammenities and willing to pay $150 a night. I'm unsure if there is a cabin for rent in a great location or if you can rent camping gear for the night in a cool area in January. Also, how far is Yosemite from San Francisco in terms of driving distance? Thanks!

Answer
Try Yosemite Lodge, it's right near the falls and the restaurant and cafe/bar are both nice. The hotel is a bit basic, but it's right by the Yosemite falls. Off-season is $98-140/room/night depending on the quality of room and weekend/midweek. Poke around the site below, there are some interesting alternatives. There should be no need to stay outside the park in January and, depending where you stay, snow could be an issue if you do, I've had to use chains on a 4x4 to get in to Yosemite before.

When I drive there in the spring, to photograph the falls in full flood, I leave at 6:30am and get there for lunch and am back home for dinner. In the winter snow can be a real issue, as I mentioned before I've sometimes had to drive tens of miles on snow. You should really have 4x4 and snow chains to go there in January, sometimes they will insist that you use snow chains or don't enter the park. Time wise, 4 to 5 hours taking it easy, unless there is snow.

Where is a nice, reasonably priced place to stay near Great Smoky Mountains National Park?

Emily

We won't be able to bring our camping gear, but wouldn't mind staying in a cabin or motel with nice views in either Tennessee or North Carolina.

Answer
I'm leaving you a link below to what I think are the best and most unique cabin rentals in the Great Smoky Mountains of NC. Browse through some of the listings and take a look at what these cabins have to offer. Many have fantastic views and are private. I think you can easily find one you'll be very happy with.

Where in ontario can you snowboard during the summer?

I live in Toronto, Ontario and i get nervous and sad whenever the snowboarding/skiing season is ending.

-I am willing to drive by one province and possibly two.

Other forms:

What snowboarding/skiiing packages are offered for ontario snowboarding.

Answer
The closest place you could go snowboarding in the summer in Canada is Whistler. They have summer snowboarding camps on the glaciers there. The ski resorts in Alberta all close by May long weekend.

Looking for suggestions on places to camp in Tennessee?

flybynight

My two sons and I will be traveling through Tennessee in July and we are looking to spend a day or two at a campground. I have done some research online and have found a few state parks that look lovely... Fall River Falls for example. I was just hoping for any more suggestions from people who have more familiarity with the area than I do. Our final destination is going to be Atlanta and we are starting in Wisconsin. We are looking to do some hiking, climbing, swimming and tenting.

Answer
Fall Creek Falls is wonderful. The falls are incredible.

Another one to check out is Tims Ford State Park in Estill Springs/Winchester. It has cabin rentals too, and offers boating, golf, swimming, bicycling, and nature programs. It is only about 15 miles off I-24 (take the Manchester exit to TN-55).

If you want something less up scale, check out Old Stone Fort State Archeaological Park in Manchester. It has tent camping, golf course, archeaological museum, hiking, and is on a river gorge. Just a mile or so off I-24 but very remote.

What is the least crowded site at joshua tree? Also, if my group left on a sunday morning for camping and stayed through tuesday or wednesday would it be busy?

Answer
This time of year Joshua Tree fills up at every campground on the weekend, weekdays would be less crowded. The best area can be reserved in advance at Indian cove. Hidden Valley and Jumbo rocks fill up first any day of the week because they are closest to the best climbing and sightseeing If you want privacy and can spend the gas driving then right near the southern entrance at cottonwood would be the best. I stay in Joshua tree a lot 2-3 times a year and never have had an issue with party animals, and I always stay at either Indian cove or Hidden Vally. Joshua Tree is very well known internationally it is very likely that your camping neighbor will be a european, greet them and enjoy the company they love meeting folks from Cali.

What are the best camp grounds in southern california?

y.thelastm

In the process of planning a camping trip, but most locations seem to be very "park like" and are far too "RV Friendly." I'm looking for a more desolate location where I won't hear the noise from my neighbors. Preferably we'd like areas near hiking trails and fishing/hunting areas, but the most important thing is actually in getting as far away from RVs and other noisy campers as possible.

Answer
if you really want an rv-free experience, you need to look for primitive sites. these are sites with no electricity, no bathrooms (well, maybe pit toilets), and occasionally no water.

in summer, the only tolerable places are the mountains. check out the national forest websites for the Angeles, San Bernardino & Cleveland NF's. look at their campsite listings and look for "primitive" or similar descriptions. call and ask which campgrounds get the most & the least traffic. in the winter, i love to hit the deserts - Joshua Tree (although you will find RVs there), Death Valley, Mojave Preserve. although the mountains can be nice in winter, too.

also, look for state parks in the area. obviously the beach parks will be overrun in sunny weather, but we camped at the beach for new Year's once and had the place almost to ourselves.

there are other places, but i've listed those that are closest to the LA/IE/OC population centers. hope it helped!

Is it safe to visit the Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwe side? If so where should I stay, luxury & standard?

James H

Planning a vacation to South Africa, already visiting Cape Town and the Western Cape. Would love to end the trip at Victoria Falls just need tips on safety and where to stay.

Answer
I visited the Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwean side just a month ago. It was quite safe provided that you don't go walk abouts on your own and do not openly display your camera, bags etc. Keep your wallet/ cash in a safe place.
Whatever you do, don't walk around after dark. Don't fall for any money changing scams or offers to show you around by strangers. There are quite a few luxury hotels of which I found the best to be The Kingdom. The Elephant Hills is also very nice and has been rebuilt a few years ago after a fire almost destroyed it completely. Good standard accommodation can be found at numerous safari camps around the town, one being Tatenda Safaris which offers sunset booze cruises along the Zambezi River, tours to the local crocodile farm and others. You will be required to produce your passport to view the Falls and if you do not have a Zimbabwean passport you will have to pay your entry fee in US$ so be prepared for that. The hotels also charge for the accommodation in forex. Good luck and I sincerely hope that you will enjoy the trip and be safe.

Looking to do a tour type of ride that has either paved and/or hard packed trails to ride on. Something in a natural setting with camping (preferably cabin) facilities along the way. We will have mountain and hybrid bikes.

Answer
The Delaware Raritan Canal is the place to go. Fits your description exactly. If you camp at Bulls Island State Park, you'll have access to the canal in NJ and PA and be a relatively short bike ride from New Hope and Lambertville, cutesy little touristy towns on the Delaware River.

Where is a good place to go camping in central NJ area?

Jack

I have a lot of experience camping, I just want to know a good place that is deep in the woods to get away from everything. Somewhere peaceful. Not some cheesy scout campsite or park.

Answer
That's very difficult to find in NJ, particularly in central NJ.

In western/northern NJ you have 72 miles the Appalachian Trail. Camping is only permitted in the provided shelters (or nearby/within view, if the shelter is full), and only for one night per location.

There are some nice and relatively separated family campsites in Stokes State Forest, also in northern NJ.

In southern NJ, the Pine Barrens offers some nice campsites off the beaten trail. Many of these are sparsely populated in the Fall. There are even two sites, Mullica and Lower Forge, that are hike-in or canoe-in only.

If you want more remote/secluded camping you'll need to travel to upstate NY or western PA.

What do I expect when moving from California to Washington State?

Mother of

My fiancé and I are moving from the Bay Area to Washington by September of this year. Since we are quite done with the CA city lifestyle, we were hoping for some tips, pointers, and personal experiences.

What we don't care for:

Smog, dirty cities, conservative mindsets, hate of any kind, social media trends, materialistic personalities, emergency sirens going off every night, disrespectful neighbors, crammed houses, mass produced unhealthy food, everyone and their mom on man made drugs, overload of clustered pop dance clubs, not seeing any stars at night, hot humid mosquito filled weather, nor cal/so cal gang nonsense...

What we are interested in:

GREEN. Trees everywhere. Wildlife! Rivers, lakes, ocean, beaches, mountains, hiking trails, dog parks, shopping centers, co ops, farmers markets, metaphysical crystal stores, bead stores, book stores, library, jr college/state college, yoga, mma/boxing, art scenes, music venues, local eateries and bars, good 'ol coffee shops, Marijuana (hey, we're from Cali...that will never leave lol) fishing areas, museums, movies, camp sites, near points of interests, cabin/wilderness lifestyle, gardening, archery/hunting, tattoo shops, community volunteering

We're both artists (he plays professional metal music and I draw)
Along with our dogs Bear the Pit Bull and Wolf the German Shepherd, we are curious if WA has any 'land/acreage' areas. I've been training both my boys from day one and I would love to find some land to work them on.

How is the weather?
Whats the social life like per demographic?
What are the employment opportunities?
What is the best dog friendly nature points of interests?
We practice Shamanism, where can we find some love in that area?
Art scenes? Tattoo Shops? Music venues? College life?
Any schools you would recommend?
Our budget for rent is $1,000, is that doable?
What about the laws out there?
Dispensaries and marijuana? Do they have them like CA?
Vegetarian/raw lifestyle areas? Thanks!!!

Answer
The Olympia area sounds like you. Go there and poke around. If you want land, there is plenty of rural around there, to the south and west.

Marijuana has been decriminalized. Dispensaries will be open to all by the end of this year.

Almost no sun in the winter, but summer is spectacular. The forest is so dense you can't walk in much of it. Evergreen State Univ in Olympia has a very liberal reputation. So many questions!

I have twenty acres of forest for sale, remote but 20 miles from the ocean. Beautiful vista of just trees.

What are you waiting for?

Scott L

A couple of people and myself are planning one in the next couple of years and were wondering what would the best things to pack for a winter start in Georgia. Plus what would be some things that our families could mail us along the way as the weather begins to get warmer?

Answer
Several months of free time.

Strong legs and good overall health (well, this is not absolutely necessary, but comes in handy...)

Good, comfortable hiking boots - a "must". Also, keep your feet as dry as possible. If your feet are prone to sweating, change your socks more often, and you can reduce sweating by bathing your feet in a borax solution daily for a couple of weeks before the hike and occasionally during it if the sweating comes back. Proper foot care is VITAL on a long hike. Cut your toe nails regularly, and don't let fungal infections get established between your toes. If you stat to get a blister, put a porous bandaid on it as soon as you notice it: don't let blisters grow.

Lightweight tent that is also durable. Best tent bargains are right now - end of season sales!!

Adequate water containers - you should carry at least a couple of liters at all times, and some water purifying tablets in case you get caught in a situation where you have to use them.

A bit of money for use in emergencies - $100 would be just fine.

A good, easily-carried pack: make sure it doesn't cut into your shoulders when fully loaded, and balance it properly for carrying with minimum back problems. Carry your load fairly high on your shoulders: too low is bad for the lower back.

Contact information to carry with you - not just one telephone number, but a couple and email addresses would be a help in some situations.

Rope - to help secure your tent in storms, for use as clothes-lines, etc. Recommend hemp rope, not nylon or polyester. Rope comes in handy in a variety of situations: don't be caught without it!!

Strong but thin twine.

"Emergency kit" - first aid stuff like bandaids, antibiotic ointment, aspirins, triangular bandage etc., and matches in a waterproof container, a few fish hooks and lures..... the ingredients of a good first aid and general survival kit can be found on many websites.

A good general knowledge of edible and medicinal (and poisonous!) plants wouldn't hurt... can come in handy in many situations. For example if you know that jewelweed/"touch me not" is a great antidote for poison ivy, that could save you a lot of itching!! If you know that the common plantain weed is very effective to calm down wasp and bee stings, this could also be very useful, etc.

A "tin can stove": something you can light a little contained fire in when the woods are dry, will come in useful in a variety of situations.

Maps: the trail is well marked, but if you ever get off it somehow, or like to know precisely where you are, a map is really useful!!

Couple of changes of clothing: staying dry is necessary for good sleep and good health.

Rain clothing is a "must"!! It can be very light weight but make sure it is strong and durable.

A few camp cooking things and dishes.

Food to last a few days should be carried: dried food is best. Cans are heavy.

Sun screen, and if you are sensitive, bug repellent (but if you completely ignore bug bites, they go away very quickly).

Be sure to check your body for ticks at the end of each day - if discovered on the same day, hardly ever transmit parasites.

Wear a hat - and a good walking stick will come in handy in a variety of situations.

What should I put in the emergency kit?

Adela

My family will go camping this weekend. I was told to bring a emergency kit in case of any unexpected things. What should I put in it?

Answer

Chemical hand/foot warmer

Tent repair:
Spare pegs
Spare guy rope
Gaffer tape (useful for other things too, like splints)
Waterproof seam sealant
Tent repair kit
A soft pencil (which you can rub on a sticking zip to lubricate with the graffite)

Car:
Tarpaulin & rope
Tool kit - spanner, pliers, screwdriver
Spares - Jubilee clips, fuses, tyre & rad weld
Check the spare tyre

What is the best and cheapest way to travel Italy and France?

best camping places france

best camping places france image

Sarah Welc

I wanted to travel around Italy for a couple of weeks at the end of my school year and now I'm thinking of adding on France but I'm not sure what the cheapest way to do it is. I was looking at the Eurorail but it is a bit expensive and seems limiting since there is a set amount of times you can use it within two months. Would it be easier to just fly to Italy or France and then take buses from one city to the next? Does anyone have any suggestions on what cities or regions I should see in these two countries if I only have a month or less to see them both. I am a college student so traveling cheaply is an important piece. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Answer
The trains are an excellent way to get around. It's not necessarily cheaper to get a rail pass than to purchase individual tickets; individual tickets are almost always cheaper in Italy. If you buy tickets early enough to get the "smart" fare on night train from any of several stations in Italy to Paris, you can travel through the nioght for as low as 35 euro for a berth in a 6 bed cuchette or 55 euro in a 4 bed cuchette. Much of the travel time is time you'd be sleeping anyway and you do not need to pay for a hotel/hostel for that night. See: http://www.trenitalia.com/cms/v/index.jsâ¦

Prices depend on exactly where you start from, where you fly into, the kind of places you stay and what you see/do/eat. People who backpack generally can get by for $100 per day staying in cheap hostels and carefully watching their budget (not including airfare). However, if you stay in hotels, it will cost you more. I usually spend 100 to 150 euro a night for a hotel just for myself, but there are cheaper places.

Here are some resources that can help you plan and check options and current prices for your trip (expect prices in the future to rise):

http://www.kayak.com/ - airfares & hotels; the explore function is useful for finding the less expensive places to fly into from your starting point.

http://www.skyscanner.it/ - particularly good for budget flights within Europe, but you can also use everywhere as a destination to do something like the explore option on Kayak. You may not need the airfares, but you can compare to the cost of the trains to get around. this one may be more useful for you.

http://www.seat61.com/ - a great train site with details about railpasses. It can be cheaper to buy individual tickets than passes. This site will tell you how to determine whether you're better off with a railpass or individual tickets or some combination for your trip. It also details how to use the pass and what to avoid to get the best use out of a pass. Most high speed, international and night trains require reservations and will require you to pay a supplement when you use a railpass. You need to be aware that a railpass is almost always more expensive for trains here in some places like Italy and Spain.

http://www.trenitalia.com/cms/v/index.js⦠- Italian train schedules & prices. You can find links to the various national train sites on the Man in Seat 61 site above.

http://www.venere.com/ - hotels/B&Bs - prices for the same hotel can vary hugely depending on the season and what local events are going on.

http://www.hostelbookers.com/ - hostels.

http://www.monasterystays.com/ - monasteries & convents that offer accommodations

You can also look into camping or couch surfing as cheaper alternatives for accommodations.

http://www.whatsonwhen.com/sisp/index.ht⦠- festivals, exhibitions and events

http://www.backpackeurope.com/ - information & advice

For sightseeing prices: check the websites for entrance fees for the museums & galleries you're interested in. I spend anywhere between nothing and 40 euro a day depending on exactly what I go to see when out exploring. For food, I spend around 25 to 50 euro for a meal, but you can eat for less. A pizza is 8 to 13 euro and a panino or wrap is around 3 to 6.50 euro in many places. You can often get food at festivals at a relatively low price. You can also shop in the markets and put some meals together for yourselves. When I travel, I like to try the local specialties and the good restaurants.

Where is the best place to visit in Europe for a naturist holiday?

noggin

My wife and I are thinking of going to Croatia or Bulgaria for a change (as opposed to France or Spain). Any other ideas are welcome.

Answer
I'm not sure everyone so far has understood your question. By naturist, do you mean you want to go to nudist beaches or that you just want to spend a lot of time in nature, like, camping, hiking etc?
Croatia has a lot of gorgeous natural resorts where you can hike and camp but you have to be careful not to thread into uncharted territory, as there are still minefields in many places.
If we're talking nudism, every slightly larger tourist resort has a secluded nudist beach, it's considered a part of the standard tourist offer here.

Who makes the best camping tents?

Live Wilso

I would like to know who makes the best camping tents?

Answer
"Best" is an opinion that also applies to what your budget is. The best tents in the world are the handcrafted tents made by tentsmiths these run around a thousand dollars or more. If your looking at the common tents that you can find available at sporting good stores everywhere "best" falls into what sells the best, again in each category of mountain tents to family camping tents. The best selling tents in the world are Coleman tents. Now are these the "Best" tent there is in each category and of course not NO, but are they the best tent in any category Yes Family tent camping.

If your looking for a mountain tent for back packing "Best" becomes what is lightest to carry and can withstand the high winds and severe weather. Here the competition is very big and well over 25 different tent makers all claim "best" in one way or another. I again go back to what sells the most and has good reviews. REI has the Half-dome tent that is the best seller in this category with consistent reviews.

The opinions you get here are obviously skewed by personal opinion some by folks that have absolutely no clue so if you want to find out for your self you need to do research of your own. One resource that has consistent information is BackPacker.com they do product reviews constantly and get peoples opinions form all over. Some major online sellers also have product reviews like REI, Gander Mountain, Campmor and the many many others

Have fun shopping

I want to buy a truck and put a cab cover thing on and wondered if I could use a closed bed truck to tow a 5th wheel or if I have to leave the bed open to connect the 5th wheel. I need a place to store camping gear when it isn't being used.

Answer
It all Depends on what size Fifth-Wheel you have, If you do not want to go to any expense then don't even think about a short box pickup, Some 1/2 ton trucks can do the trick, depending again on size of 5th wheel.
The bed of your truck has to be open as the rails and hitch are attached to your frame. some people have had covers made that go around hitch leaving the pintle open.
As far as storage place? Well most 5th wheels come with alot of storage compartments that can be used to store camping gear.
I my self would go with a 3/4 or 1 ton truck. And again, depending on size, go with a diesel engine as it has more torque vs. a gas motor.

i want to git some camping gear and start traveling the world but?

i want to git some camping gear and start traveling the world but how do i eat baeth and is thar any thing els i need to know any tips i dont have any family to take care of i will only have whats on my back and i want to see the world

Answer
Campgrounds and hostels are available in almost every country around the world. Most campgrounds and all hostels have bathroom and shower facilities. You can take a sponge bath or use a shower bag when going extended periods without access to a shower. Prices can range from free to $50 a night, depending on location, facilities and amenities. If you avoid the more luxurious campgrounds, and stay where its free as much as possible, you will probably average around $10 per night.

Almost every village and town has a cafe, a baker, a grocer, a market or a farm. You will need money, local coin and currency, to buy food. You can go to a restaurant or cafe, or you can cook it yourself using a backpacking stove (using unleaded gasoline for fuel would be best) and cookset. If you go to real remote places you might have to buy or trade for food with families. I am told that when traveling in these remote areas, trade is often better than money; but I don't know for sure because I've never gone that far off from civilization.

You will also need money to travel by bus and by train, unless you plan to walk. Or you can buy a cheap car once you get in country and drive around, then sell it when you leave. This leads to another possibility: buying a cheap, small, used recreational vehicle (often called a Caravan or Camper Van outside the US), which provides not only transportation but your own rolling bedroom and kitchen, maybe even a potty and a shower. Many used camper vans are listed on eBay's UK site for under £2,000 (about $3,200 US). Of course you'll also need insurance and have to pay for fuel. But when you consider the cost of buying all the lightweight gear you'd need for backpacking, then paying for bus or train fare, and the discomfort and other factors, buying a used camper van might be the ideal way to see the world.

Preferably in the north east of England ? Me and some friends want a cheap drinking holiday so we have been looking around and the campsites generally look like they are for people who are just relaxing.
We dont want to be disturbing other peoples fun so I was wondering if there was anywhere we could go

Answer
If you go onto a mixed site, with tents and caravans and some have chalets, you'll find that most of them have a bar, a restaurant, and fun things for the kids.
My bit top end fave is way up at the top of Scotland at Cape Wrath.
The campsite bar is the village pub becaause the other option is the community hall with a bar, a long mile up a steep hill away and the next one is on the road to Tongue...but....yeah, that's a nice pub. Brill... If you have a driver who isn't drinking.
That campsite bar can hold 400 and boy does it rock some nights......read the first few lines of the review

Happy camping.....you're safe at Sango. There's a fence round the top of the cliff.....

Need advice about where to stay in Scotland?

Kathryn O'

We will be spending a week in Scotland, and I'd like to know various opinions about hotels or perhapes bed and breakfasts. Any suggestions? We will be there in July.

Answer
The visiting angler, whatever you need, will find a variety of good holiday accommodation throughout Scotland. Whatever your chosen location, from the Borders to Shetland, from the North Sea coast to the wild hills and lochs of the Western Isles, you will have a choice of excellent hotels, guest houses, self catering holiday cottages and numerous camping and caravan sites.
it's not my advice just suggest.

Where can I find cheap camping in Southern California with Toilets and Showers?

MthrNature

I was just looking at Silverwood Lake. They want $35-$45 just to pitch a tent. Then I know I'm going to be over run with RV's with generators till 10PM. This is very frustrating. I could find some cheap motel and a lot more privacy for that.

Where can I find inexpensive camping in Southern California that doesn't charge cheap motel prices for tent sites but offers good bathrooms and showers?

Answer
Your options are limited to whats available going rates for general camp sites in the so cal area are $20+ a few can be found at under $20 on the outskirts of so cal in the desert regions and if your willing to primitive camp at a dispersed area the cost would be the annual parking pass $5 a day $30 for the year.

Near Silver-wood lake in the back country along 2N33 or pilot rock road a 4WD route you can camp anywhere along it's route with the pass.

North of Silver-wood lake is Apple-white campground in the lytle creek area $10-15 a night no showers though.

Some private parks in the area such as Mountain lakes resort are even higher than Silver-wood lake.

Supply and demand drives the price of full service campgrounds way up and only a handful in the so cal public parks have showers, these all are $25+ a night. It is still cheaper than a hotel and I challenge you to find any in the area that are less than $50 a night. Cabin rentals in the area are triple that per night.

camping in PA, where can we go roughing it?

family tent camping virginia image

So a few friends and I are planning a camping trip in the first week of August. We live in western PA, so we're looking for places towards the middle of the state, and the far right side of Ohio. The whole point of the question is that we don't want any old campground. We want to be somewhere that is in deep woods, not next door to some family in a pop up. Basically a place that will let us "rough it" with lots of tent sites. Any good suggestions?

Answer
The only way you will find quiet deep woods camping in PA in the summer is if you are willing to hike at least a few miles into the forest. Anyplace you can drive up to will be occupied by others. So a place with "lots of tent sites" may be problematic if you are looking for solitude.

That said, there are many places in the Allegheny National Forest to your north and in Monongahela National Forest in WV, to your south. Both are about a 4 hour drive from Pittsburgh. The West Virginia mountains will tend to be more rugged and less populated. Due to increased logging and gas well development in the Allegheny Forest it is getting harder to find your way away from people and roads.

I've backpacked and camped extensively in both areas. As the previous answer mentioned, the PA department of Natural Resources has excellent state maps and guides on line to all the camping areas in the state. Some of the more spectacular and remote areas in WV are Cranberry Backcountry, Dolly Sods, Otter Creek and Spruce Knob and you can find info on line from the state of WV on those.

Even closer to Pittsburgh, there are nice campsites along the Laurel Highlands Trail that runs roughly north-south 50 miles to the east. And the John P. Saylor Trail near Johnstown has several loop trails with great campsite areas for multiple tents. Go on line and check the reservation requirements for any place you are headed to make sure you comply with location restrictions and that areas are not already overbooked. There are published guides to both National Forests available in outfitter shops and book stores. I recommend taking a book -- easier access than on on-line when you're beyond "civilization".

The closest really deep roadless wilderness is the Adirondacks in upstate NY.

My family and i want to take a simple vacation with our 8 mo old baby we just dont know where to go.?

We want to stay near the indiana, ohio, Illinios area.

Answer
I cant believe the people that say camping is great with a baby. They may be right, but I wouldnt try it with my kids (ages 2 and 3 weeks). Why? Because when we take my son to a new place to sleep, it bothers him- be it grandma's house, a hotel, a condo, whatever. So he gets fussy, he doesnt want to go to bed, he cries a lot, etc. And this is a laid-back kid that started sleeping through the night when he was 10 days old. I can only imagine how much worse it would be, being stuck in a tent with him.

When my son was 9 months old, we took him down to Hilton Head in SC. We left at like, 3AM, so when he woke up around 8:30 AM, we were already almost halfway there. We're thinking about maybe going back later this summer, after the baby is a few months older. We get a 2-3 bedroom condo. That makes it seem more like home to the kids. And they get their own rooms, which means they dont see us if they wake up a little bit at night, so they go back to sleep, rather than screaming to get our attention.

That being said, it sounds like you want to stay closer. Cedar Point is great, but an 8 month old would hate it, and would make it no fun for parents too. Same with Kings Island. I'd suggest someplace more laid back- like rent a couple bedroom cabin at Hocking Hills. You're still in a nice, quiet, natural area, but you've got a house which will make your baby a lot more comfortable. If you are willing to consider Tennessee/North Carolina, then you could also get a cabin on the Smoky Mountains. Its a very straight shot down I75, so its an easy and relatively short drive- shorter than many parts of Illinois and around the same as going to Chicago.
You could also consider renting a place on Put-In-Bay up on Lake Erie.
Or make the drive to the beach at Myrtle, Hilton Head, or Virginia. Kids like the beach a lot more than mountains anyway, stop halfway and spend the night if 8-12 hours driving is too much for your little one. Just be sure to get a place with 2 bedrooms if you can, you will all be a lot happier.
