Shopping in Haridwar
However shops in Haridwar have some interesting things to offer to the tourist. The main shopping centers are Moti bazaar, Upper Road, Jwalapur and Kankhal. Places to visit
Mansa Devi Temple
This temple is located at the top of Bilwa Parvat. It is dedicated to the Goddess Mansa Devi (a form of Shakti). The Powerful statue of the goddess is depicted with her having three mouths and five arms. It is believed that the Goddess fulfils all the wishes of a sincere devotee. On the top of the hill, there are many shops where coconuts, fruits, marigold garlands and incense sticks are available. These things are offered to the Goddess. Also one can easily reach Mansa Devi Temple by taking local Buses, rickshaws, Tongas or by hiring taxis from Haridwar.

Chandi Devi
The temple of Chandi Devi is situated atop the Neel parvat on the other bank of river Ganga and was constructed 1929 by the king of Kashmir-Suchat singh. The pilgrims can visit the temple by the ropeway in around 5 minutes while the steep climb by steps takes over 45 minutes. The main image at Chandidevi temple is said to have been installed by Adi Shankaracharya in 8th century A.D.

Bharat Mata Temple
This temple is situated at Varanasi and is the only temple dedicated to Bharat Mata. It is located in the Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth campus. The Bharat Mata temple was built by Babu Shiv Prasad Gupt and inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi in 1936.The statue of Bharat mata is built in marble.

Har Ki Pauri
It is a major pilgrimage attraction in Haridwar. It was built by king Vikamaditya to commemorate the descending of Ganga after years of difficult prayers and fasting done by his ancestor Bhagirathi.

Every evening thousands of locals, pilgrims and tourists gather on its banks to perform, watch and admire the evening aarti, the praise sung in respect of the holiest of all rivers, River Ganga. This place is famous and auspicious that no one wants to miss it. Floral tributes and lit up diyas floating on the Ganges is the most enchanting sight one gets at this ghat.

Sapt Rishi Ashram & Sapt Sarovar:-
It is the most frequently visited site in haridwar. Sapt Rishi Ashram is an ancient ashram famous for having hosted seven (sapt) sages (rishis), namely, Kashyapa, Vashisht, Atri, Vishwamitra, Jamadagi, Bharadwaja and Gautam.

Hindus believe that when the sages sat here to meditate, they were disturbed by the thunderous waters of the Ganges. To continue with their meditation in peace, they trapped the River Ganges. Later, the Ganga split herself into seven small streams to avoid any interruption to the meditating sages. Hence, the Sapt Rishi Ashram came to be known as Sapt Sarovar, meaning seven streams. It is 5 km away from Har ki Puri.

Sati Kund
This is the holy place where the wife of Lord Shiva, Mata Sati is believed to have done the ritual of self-immolation. The ghat here is thus famous today as Sati Kund.

Places to camp near Toronto, CA?

forshizzle

I'm looking for a good spot in Canada, preferably near the border, somewhere no more than 12 hours away (I live in South Jersey). I want to camp with my friends in a safe area with water nearby, but not on a camp ground. We're planning on going in March and not too many camp grounds will be open at that time. Also, we want it to be a unique experience with no other people/families around. Thanks

Answer
March ? In Ontario ?

Be prepared to be in deep snow, and in temps of 15 or 20 F, with a raw wind blowing off Lake Ontario.

Way too soon to be camping here. Do it in MAY, not March.

Now, for the location in MAY..............It is not legal to camp on private property in Canada. And any land that is NOT private is owned by the Provincial Government, and that is also a no-no unless it is a Provincial Park (like a NJ state park ) where there are rules and entrance fees.

In so many words ..........you can't do that in Ontario.

Here is a link to the Ontario Parks information website. LOOK for "sandbanks Provincial Park " or " Charleston Lake Provincial Park ", both of which are near the border crossing at the top of I -81 in New York State.

Toronto.

Does anyone know a place I can camp out in my car near Toronto?

Jim

I might go to Toronto for a day, but I don't want to drive 5hrs back at night and don't want/need a hotel room, I can easily sleep in my car. I was wondering if someone knew of a place, maybe a park or camp site or something similar, where I could park and safely sleep in my car

Answer
There's Glen Rouge campground just east of Toronto, or you can check with the Ontario Parks site. They have a few places not far from Toronto. But check the operating dates carefully. Many are closed by now. Failing any of those, google "Toronto truck stops". Truck stops aren't bad places to catch a few winks if you can find a relatively quiet corner. There are usually trucks coming and going all night, but there are washrooms and a place to get food at all of them.

are there any free camping sites that are close to the lake of south lake tahoe?

smitholot

it would be i assume in eldorado national forest but could you tell me anything more specific then that? i would like it to be by tin bridges if there is one.
these first two ppl who answered are rediculous. safeway? really? stay at a hotel. and when i give a refrence of what i think is close like "twin bridges" that means i think that it is close. duh. to correct my opinion is retarded. and twin bridges is close if your not so lazy that while your camping you dont hike more then a couple of miles

Answer
I stayed at NEVADA BEACH CAMPGROUND (NV), LAKE TAHOE BASIN and it was like $30 a night. We were right up against the beach and for convenience, Safeway was nearby.

National Park campgrounds will not be free, but are usually very inexpensive. Try http://www.recreation.gov to see if you can find something that fits your budget.

Or, I'm sure there are plenty of camping groups on various websites that can offer tips and secret spots. Try google to find some.

Edit - Wow, excuse me for answering your vague question. I hadn't realized that passing a Safeway on the way to a campground that's several miles away and on the beach deserved me being drawn & quartered.

If you want to go rough it in the woods somewhere 135 miles from civilization, be my guest. Still won't be free, though. But, at least this way you won't shed your special cheer on anyone else trying to be helpful.

Any recommendation for Cabin/Lodge/Camp Sites in Lake Tahoe?

pinaytechi

I'm looking for a campsite in Lake Tahoe, pls send me links. I prefer site near Donner Lake if there's any....

Answer
We love Rustic Cottages on Tahoe Vista which has a bunch of great small cabins at a reasonable price.

Camping - you might still find something at Fallen Leaf - a national forest campground as opposed to the state parks. This, though, is on the west side of Tahoe rather than the north by Donner. You should look at campgrounds in the Tahoe National Forest for that.

Travel ideas for young adults in Melbourne.?

Ui

i want to go somewhere with like 5 friends but i don't know where i want there to be a place where yo can relax, play guitar, go swimming, shops to look around and stuff.

Answer
Well ... Hamilton Island aint Melbourne !!!

SO... lets answer your actual question :)

At this time of year the weather is great for any beach side location ..

Try looking at places such as Wye River ...it is close to Lorne, lovely beaches, great camping facilities which are right on the beach .. but a little quiter and more low key then larger holiday areas such as Lorne.
(Apollo Bay also a good option in this area!!)

Phillip Island is another good option ... very relaxed, good shopping, swimming, walks and lots to see and do (great wild life - fairy penguins, koala's, kangeroos etc)

Sorrento .. good fun ... more of a hip 'toffs' location then the other options .. but some great beaches and fantastic walks.

Ocean Grove ... great beaches, very relaxed

Hope this helps

Places to have sweet 16th birthday party for a girl?

_

Hey guys!
So I've been having most of my birthday parties in my house with friends and for my sweet 16th, I'd like to do something different and have it elsewhere. Does anyone know any places in Melbourne, Australia where a girl could have her 16th Birthday Party that would make it a nice, memorable day?
A place that is cheap per person would be good. I'm thinking of limiting my guests to 10-15 people.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Website links to some of the party venues that you mention is also appreciated!
Thanks in advance! :)

Super Waad

Answer
WRIGHTS LAKE, CA
Wrights Lake Campground is situated in the timber belt, close to the lake shore, looking up at the majestic rocky peaks of the Sierra Nevadas and Desolation Wilderness. The area is well-known for its hiking, wildflowers and birding.
Natural Features:

At nearly 7,000 feet in elevation, the campground is surrounded by pine and fir trees with a grassy understory. Wildflowers bloom throughout the spring and summer seasons.

Some sites are nestled among giant boulders, providing privacy for campers. The campground is close to Wrights Lake, a 40-acre body of water popular for its serene and quiet atmosphere.

Recreation:

The campground provides access to the lake, where visitors enjoy trout fishing, swimming and boating activities. Motorboats are prohibited in the area.

Hikers will enjoy access to multiple foot and horseback riding trails within 5 miles of the campground. Various trailheads, including Bloodsucker, Rockbound and Twin Lakes trails, provide access to Desolation Wilderness.

Educational programs are offered at the amphitheater, and mountain biking and off-road vehicle use is popular on Barrett Lake Jeep trail. Wilderness permits for day hiking are available at the trailheads, and overnight hiking permits are available at Pacific Ranger Station.

Facilities:

The campground offers dozens of campsites for tent, RV and equestrian camping. Several sites offer sweeping views of Wrights Lake.

Each site is equipped with tables and campfire rings with grills, and firewood can be gathered in the area. Accessible vault toilets and drinking water are provided. A camp host is available during the daytime.

Camping with a 2yr old, 1yr old, and 37wks Pregnant?

ilovenephi

Me and my husband are planning on going camping on the 29th of May just for the one night and the next day. I will be 37 weeks that day. The lake is only an hour away and we are planning on going up early Friday and the coming back later on Saturday so it won't be too much driving and activity at once. We have 2yr and 1yr old daughters that will be going with us. We are hoping that my brother-in-law will let us use his RV, but my husband is scared to ask him lol.(My sister is going to ask him today for me) If we can't then we have an air-up bed and tents, etc. (I am prepared to sleep in the car in the nice reaclining seats if necessary lol) Just wondering if anyone has gone with young children or while pregnant? What should I expect/bring? (besides lots and lots of pillows lol)
The next day is my husbands company summer party thats why we aren't going until then. Some of the other employees will be going up the day before with their families and since my husband is in charge of the watercrafts (rental and everything) then we have to stay with them at all times and we just wanted them to be able to use them that day.
Thanks
(Also should I bring my stroller or not? I have a Jeep Double, a single, and a little umbrella - my 1yr old can't quite walk yet she might by then but I don't know )

Answer
My family is planning a camping trip for the 4th of July and my daughter will be 17 months and I'll be 36 weeks pregnant, so I haven't actually experienced it myself, but have done some thinking. My advice would be that if you can get the camper, great! That would be much easier than the air blow up bed. But, if not I think you guys would make it through that. I would definately bring a stroller for the older 2. They might get very tired walking around a campground. Especially later in the day. And they could nap in it too, instead of you maybe having to carry them. As for packing I would just make sure to bring plenty of change in clothes, a lot of bottled water or jugs to keep cool and stay hydrated. Take breaks in the shade and use plenty of sunscreen. Don't break out of their normal routine if you can help it and try to make sure they still get a nap if they usually take one, that way they aren't cranky at bed time in a strange place. Hope this helps.

Black Ops Questions!!!?

Katherine

1. What is your favorite map?

2. What is your favorite hiding/ sniping spot?

3. What are your kill streaks?

4. What is your least favorite map?

5. Why do you play Black Ops?

Answer
Favorite Map - Firing Range, it is a medium/small map and I tend to get a lot of kills on. This map can also be very annoying. But contending with my favorite map is Kowloon, this map is the place where i got my best game 119 kills 1 death.

Favourite hiding spot/sniping spot - I really don't "Camp" or snipe. If i snipe its only quickscoping so i am always running around. AS well as this I strategically camp which means i sit in one spot for about 2-3 kills then move to a new one, get to 2-3 kills then move on again, this usually works very well for me. I get a BlackBird, Gunner, and gunship every game lately.

Killstreaks - As i said above i use Black Bird, Chopper Gunner, and Gunship. I have alwasy liked BB(Black Bird) and Chopper, and recently i switched from dogs to gunship because, i dont think dogs are worth the 11 kill streak. I have called in dogs about 100 times and got about 300 kills. With the gunship i have called it in about 50 and have over 350 kills with it.

Least fav map - I really dont have one. I kinda like em all.

Why play Black ops - I REally have no idea! i just think its amazingly fun, its probably my fav cod game tied with cod 4. Lots of fun and cool cutomization.

Where is the best place on the east coast to camp on the beach?

Courtney

I'm trying to take a camping trip next week and the place we picked in North Carolina just doesn't seem that great. It's completely isolated on it's own little island. As nice as that sounds, I want to be able to go a store to get food or do something at night.

I would like to be able to literally open up my tent, walk a few feet and be in the ocean. Any suggestions would be great.

Answer
Well I believe i know where your talking and yes it is very isolated, I want to try it there myself, but don't have a 4x4 set up to do beach travel yet. It is going to be hard to find a place on the beach that is not over ran with RVs. You might want to check these sites out, you might be able to find what your looking for. If you find a nice place let me know, I might try it. I don't think your going to find a location like the island your talking about. There are just not many places like that one around. Sorry I could not be of more help.

Good Places To Go Camping On The East Coast?

ToastedBac

I live in Maryland and I plan on going camping with a friend this summer, I was just hoping to get some suggestions on places that are relatively close to Maryland that would be fun for camping.
I don't have a problem with driving 6 hours away but anything further would be a bit much for me.
So, what are some good places to go camping on the east coast?
Anything's welcome, campgrounds, state parks, etc.

Answer
We ( my hubby, me and 2 sons) loved camping in Chincoteague, VA. We stayed at Tom's Cove campground right on the water. The kids were able to fish, and crab and had a ball. The beach of Assateague and the wild horses were worth the short trip over the bridge. Here is a link to the campground.

what are the best places to camp in Ontario Canada?

Emma Tucke

My boyfriend and I are hoping to go camping on a vacation to Canada. What are the best campgrounds and what are their rates. If you have links to websites for them that would be great as well.

Also what is the drinking age there? I overheard someone saying that if you are an american you must abide by the american laws.

Answer
Any of the multitude of provincial parks offer good camping. Pick the place you want to visit and then find a park nearby. Campsites run about $14 to $40 per night depending on what facilities there are in the park or your campsite. For instance electricity or access to showers will be more expensive than one that has no perks at all. Each park has a variety of different priced campsites. Some are just canoeing campsites and others have most of the comforts of home.

If you intend to drink you can't do it at a provincial campsite. They have a strict no alcohol policy, no loud noise too so leave the misic at home or bring headphones.

If you leave the park to drink you must be 19 in Ontario. In other provinces it is either 18 or 19. Your laws mean nothing in Canada. In Canada you follow our laws and drinking and driving will get you in a lot of trouble so don't do it.

Auschwitz death camp?

Em J

I'm writing a paper on Auschwitz and i cant find out how many people they would put on the train and how long the ride was!? can anyone help? Thank you much!

Answer
I think that your question is probably impossible to answer with any precision. Prisoners arrived at Auschwitz from all over German-occupied Europe, so to speak of "the train", as if there were only one train, and of "how long the ride was", as if the prisoners travelled from only one place, is rather inaccurate. Before the war, the town of Oswiecim had 44 railway lines running into it, so, by the time of the German occupation, it was a railway hub for that region, and therefore a good choice for the Auschwitz camps (note that there was not just one camp at Auschwitz).
If you enter 'death trains to Auschwitz' into the Google search box, you will see some figures that relate to arrivals of prisoners.
I have some information about Camp Westerbork, in the Netherlands. During the war, prisoner transport trains departed every Tuesday evening for what the prisoners thought were "work camps", somewhere "in the East". In May of 1943, 7,766 people departed by train from Westerbork for "work camps", but I do not have any more-detailed information.

Camping in the Sequoia...?

R M

I'm planning to head up to the Sequoia National Park, and am wondering what the better camping places are. I'll be going during the week, and would love somewhere that isn't too crowded. Any tips would really be appreciated.

Answer
I have camped at Sheep creek (Cedar Grove area) -It is On the floor of the canyon near the South Fork of the Kings River. I fished right by my camp site and caught a limit of trout we took day trips out from there to see the rest of the area. The nicest thing I enjoyed hear is the river being so close. At night falling to sleep was hard not to do as the river soothes you to sleep. There are No reservations, First come, first served. So you may be luckey and get a site arriveing mid week.

Amenities: 111 sites, flush toilets, pay phone in the village (1/2 mile/.8 km). 1/2-mile (.8km) from showers, laundry, restaurant, market, gift shop, horseback riding. Ranger programs in July & August. One metal, bear-resistant food-storage box provided at each campsite: 48" long x 34" deep x 28" high. There are several additional boxes for sites to share.
Fee: $18/night.

I have also stayed at Buckeye Flat along the middle fork of the Kaweah River. It is beautiful here under oak trees and again the fishing is superb along this stretch. We saw a lot of deer here I think they get the feeling of safety here as no hunting is allowed around there. Again there is no reservations, First come, first served.

Amenities: 28 sites, 1 handicap site, tents only, flush toilets. One bear-resistant food-storage box provided at each campsite: 47" long x 33" deep x 28" high. There are several additional boxes for sites to share.
Fee: $18/night.

http://www.nps.gov/seki/planyourvisit/camp_region.htm

Up above the parks in the Sequoias I have stayed at upper Peppermint campground there is no drinking water, and there is dispersed camping allowed in the area. Again no reservations first come first served. There are several creeks and streams in this area that are excellent for fishing and swimming one of which has a natural water slide that runs into a very deep and icey cold pool. This was my absolute favorite of all the spots I went to in the Sequoias

What tent brands do you recommend for light camping, 3-4 days for a family of 3-4 people?

Rei

Answer
Ooooh - I just bought a tent - it is 12' by 12' and it was on sale at Bass Pro Shop - don't know if you have one near you - but it was only 99.88!!! You can order it online as well, depending on when you plan to camp. Here the link for the tent.... it's huge and it has a room divider you can hang up and each room (side) can hold a queen size air mattress. There's side pockets and sky lights (heavy plastic) too!!

What kind of tent should we get?

TaDa

I don't know anything about camping, but we're a family of four and will be going on camping trips with the Boy and Girl Scouts. What kind of tent should we get? What style? (Idiot-proof set-up would be good.) What's a good brand? (We're in Texas, so we're more likely to be camping when it's hot not cold.) Thanks!

Answer
For car-camping I always advise families to get a separate three-man, three-season, nylon dome tent for each two or three people. Maybe some families enjoy a slumber party atmosphere the first night, but by the second night I'll bet most people would prefer a little privacy.

Some people see one of those big two or three room "cabin" tents and think that's the answer, but those things are overkill, often too large for the campsite.

Even though you're camping in the summer, a dome tent with full rain fly is essential in case of a freak storm. If it's hot you can take it off, unlike a cabin tent which is usually just one layer. Some dome tents have more mesh screen rather than nylon on the inner layer and those would be the coolest.

REI http://www.rei.com/ has many good quality tents, including their own brand which are a great deal. http://www.rei.com/product/745955

If there's any chance the Scouts might be going on a backpacking trip sometime in the future, and are required to bring a tent, you might want to think about the weight of that second "kids" tent and instead try to buy the lightest 2 man, 3 season tent. This one is reasonably light for two people to share carrying it. http://www.rei.com/product/705525

I just remembered, after all that, that I also always advise people never to buy tents, sleeping bags, backpacks, etc. for their first camping trip(s) and instead to borrow or rent the more expensive gear to give yourselves a chance to learn what your personal preferences are without spending big bucks. REI also rents tents, sleeping bags, pads, backpacks and camp stoves. They have six stores in TX: http://www.rei.com/FindStores?state=TX&radius=900

custer state park camping SD.??

Mommyof2pr

at custer it says you pay a fee per camping unit.. it says a camping unit is vehicle, motor home, camper, tent. etc.. So IF we bring a camper and our car. will they charge us two fees. does that sound right. that doesnt sound right because that way everyone has to pay 2 fees who the heck sleeps in their car almost everyone will have a tent or pop up of some sort. also do you think if i have 3 tents that connect to each other thru little tunnels is that considered 3 tents or 1. im so confused? its sounds crazy to me.

Answer
My family and I have camped in CSP many times as well as other SD State Parks. It's my understanding you wonder if you'll have to pay for more than one vehicle and/or more than one sleeping unit. Your car or truck you arrive in is not included as a camper unit unless it's an obvious area to sleep. If you are able to park your vehicle on the parking pad, not on the grass, and pitch your tent or assemble your camper on the site you'll be fine. A tent that connects to another tent should still be defined as a "tent" not "tents". We have a pop-up and our girls enjoy the 12'x12' tent we pitch for them on the same site with no extra charges. I can't see any problems with your situation. You'll be fine. Oh. Don't worry about Rattlesnakes but keep a safe distance from the buffalo, they really are "wild". The Park will be one you'll never forget, I promise.

what are the pros/cons of a pop-up tent camper?

Woodland H

We're considering getting one (probably a 10' for our family of 4) and just want to know what all people experience and what they regret before we buy one. Thx!

Answer
Go for it.

I've owned an 8' and 10' pop-up and a 21' hybrid camper and a Class-C RV. Unless you can afford a Class-C (both the initial purchase and ongoing storage, insurance and maintenance), a pop-up is the way to go. Comfort, storage and convenience are the main benefits of a pop-up.

In terms of comfort, you are sleeping up and off the ground on a well-padded, insulated and flat surface that you can easily get into and out of without crawling around on your hands and knees. Most pop-ups have heat and many have air conditioning. During bad weather you have a well-protected and comfortable place to hang out.

While cabinet space in a pop-up, compared to larger RV's, is limited, it is still sufficient to permanently organize and store all the reusable gear and supplies you need for a camping trip. All your kitchen and dining stuff, cleaning stuff, bedding, etc can be permanently stowed in the cabinets or under the dinette benches. Larger items such as a tabletop BBQ grill, cooler, folding table and chairs can be organized on the floor to fit when the pop-up is closed, and still leave room to add groceries and clothing just before heading out on a trip.

As for convenience, first and foremost is most pop-ups can be towed by lightweight trucks, SUV/CUV and some mid-sized cars. They are small enough that most people store them in their backyard, driveway or garage, saving lot storage fees. With adequate storage to be fully packed and ready to go (except for groceries and clothing), taking that spur of the moment trip is a breeze.

The Cons:

As compared to tent camping, the only con is you're not going to to be backwoods camping or taking it backpacking. There is some annual maintenance required, most of which can be DIY, though I prefer to have pros deal with anything involving propane.

As compared to other RV choices? The biggest disadvantage is the time setting-up the pop-up and unloading the stuff stowed on the floor before you can use the pop-up at all. This means that if you're going on a long distance trip with many short stays, setup and breakdown can be tedious. Clothing storage is a bit problematic in a pop-up, you will need to live out of your suitcases which get stowed on the bunks by day and tucked under the dinette table or on counters by night.

Some things to think about:

A front, outside storage trunk is a wonderful feature.

Unless you plan to do a lot of dispersed / dry camping, don't bother with a bathroom in a pop-up. Although it might seem nice, there's practically no privacy. That space is better used for storage and/or seating.

An outside shower is almost an essential feature. A water heater is also a nice-to-have feature, but it does eat up storage space. A portable, water heater such as Eccotemp, Camp Chef, even Zodi costs around $100 and takes up less space.

Slide-outs on a pop-up are also a mixed bag. A slide-out adds significant weight and, when closed, steals valuable floor space. Most of the time you'll only be in the pop-up when sleeping or to escape bad weather. Having a few extra square feet of floor space when the slide is out does not make up for the lost storage when its closed.

One awning is essential, but two awnings are better. Add a second awning to the back side of your pop-up where you can setup your dining or picnic table. This leaves the normal front-side awning for lounging and relaxation.

Consider an add-a-room or screen room. The screen room is less expensive and will help protect you from insects. An add-a-room has opaque panels with screens in them, and roll-up flaps so you can close the screens for a private, sheltered area. We've used an add-a-room with the second back-side awning and cots to sleep an extra three people in comfort and privacy.

If you have two kids make sure your camper can sleep at least 6, as your kids will usually want to bring friends or relatives along. Once boys get to be about 10-12 years old they will not want to share a bed, but girls -- even teenage girls-- have no problems sharing with a female friend or cousin.

In many pop-ups the dinette bed is less than six feet long. Try to find a model with a dinette bed that measures 72" x 48" so you can fit two full-size people.

Buy used and save a ton. Most folks only use their pop-up a few times each year. Others buy one and use it a few times, then let it sit, while a few use it once and have a change of mind or situation. Even a 10 year-old pop-up is worth considering if it has been kept and stored well.

Where to go for Grad Camping Trip on Vancouver Island, BC?

Christina

im planning a grad camping trip for my high school grad class on Vancouver Island, BC... possibly around Parksville, Tofino, or the Gulf Islands....but I don't know where to go. We would want a place that isn't particularly family-oriented, because we're young and will inevitably make some noise. A place with like a group campsite would be best. we don't need any special amenities, just a campfire, some bathrooms, and showers. Any ideas? anything will help!!

Answer
There's no campsite I've ever been to that doesn't have noise a curfew, 11 pm at the latest, and pretty much all campsites are family oriented. If you make too much noise, even before curfew, expect to be asked to tone it down. The only one I've ever heard of that isn't family oriented is near Nelson BC. Miracle Beach, just north of Courtenay, has a group site that's a little removed from the rest of the campsites.

Where can i rent camping gear near Chicago, IL?

no nicknam

I'm finally taking my family on our first camping trip. But I'm on a tight budget and can't afford new camping gear or used for that matter. I looked it up on craigslist and it's still too expensive for me. Is there any place that can rent me the equipment for the weekend?

Answer
I'm not sure exactly what kind of "gear" you need, but try calling REI (Recreation Equipment, inc.)
REI Lincoln Park Store
(312) 951-6020

I'm pretty sure they rent pup tents, sleeping bags, backpacks, camp stoves, etc. and they have other Chicagoland locations:
Oakbrook Terrace, IL
Northbrook, IL
Schaumburg, IL

_________
and it looks like they are having a free "Camping Basics" event this week (06-04-2012 at the Northbrook location and 06-06-2012 in Schaumburg)

Help. Need ideas for vacation coming up in 3 weeks?

Uncle Penn

Really waited too long to plan this.

I live in San Jose Area. Would like to go somewhere for 3 or 4 days within 3 hours drive of San Jose. Somewhere where there are cabins or motel near a lake where there is swimming and maybe other activities would be nice. But open to lots of other things. Should be something a 6 year old boy would like too.

Please don't suggest anything in San Francisco.

Thanks.

Answer
The SJMerc said last week that reservations for the San Jose Family Camp at Yosemite have been slow this year because the camp was closed for a couple of years due to repairs and remodeling. They would most likely have room this summer. They have all kinds of family activities and have been well thought of in the San Jose Community for years.

From their website:

San Jose Family Camp is pleased to announce we will be opening for the 2012 Season beginning with Fish Camp at the end of April.

San José Family Camp is located in the heart of the Sierras near Yosemite National Park, just east of Groveland, California. Family Camp is situated on 47 acres of leased land from the U.S. Forest Service. The Stanislaus National Forest and the middle fork of the Tuolumne River serve as the scenic backdrop to this mountain playground. Family Camp provides a retreat where guests of all ages can fish, hike, swim, participate in organized programs or just sit back, relax and take it easy. It's a great experience for the entire family! So come up and rent a tent. During the Summer Family Session, the Camp provides three meals a day to campers, along with supervised recreational activities. Groups are welcome to rent out the Camp during the pre and post sessions. For questions, please contact staff at 408-794-6523 or Familycamp@sanjoseca.gov

Mail-in applications are now being accepted
Walk-in applications will be accepted starting on May 14 between 10am to 3pm Monday through Friday

Lacroose summer camp help?

someone

I want to play girls lacrosse this summer but I can't find any place to go. If you know any camps in central New Jersey or even east PA that would be great. It has to have a reasonable price, nothing like $300 please. Also, I'm a beginner and a girl player. I know the basics but I'm not on a team, but I would like to learn so I can be. So if you can please give me a website or any information you might know about a summer camp for girls lacrosse that would be great. Thanks!

Answer
Blair Academy, located approximately nine miles east of the Pennsylvania/New Jersey border, hosts its 8th Nike Lacrosse Camp this summer. With its exceptional campus facilities and rich athletic tradition, Blair Academy continues to be a summer camp favorite for many young athletes.

Answer
I assume you're going to the White River Amphitheater. Look up Palmer Kanaskat State Park. It's not too far out, and I don't think it's very expensive. Also, try searching for campgrounds in Enumclaw or Buckley, those cities are close as well.

Cheap/Good Camping tent/items?

ariesalway

Family of four. Little ones are 5 and almost 3. We went last year camping once and loved it - Used borrowed items. We are looking to buy our own tent and things this year..But cant spend alot of money but want something that wont be crap.
Walmart? Target?

Answer
Wal-mart has some good deals on camping gear and won't cost alot either. I have been buying what i need a little at a time. One good idea for you is to get a plastic storage box to put your cooking gear in it so you won't have to get anything from the house. They also make good containers for putting the kids toys in. And also your camping gear so everything will be packed and ready to go camping the next time you want to.

cheap and quality family tent?

my family wanna go camping in several days in Georgia National Park,we need a camping tent and some cooking supplies.pls kindly recommend cheap and quality ones.thx 4 ur kindness.

Answer
As long as the weather is fair you can make almost any tent work for you. The Coleman Instant Tent 6 or 8 person models are preferred by many because they are easy to set-up and take down, but run in the $150-200 range. The Coleman Sundome Chris recommends is a good, low-priced tent, but is not as spacious or easy to setup as the Instant Tent, thought it would probably do better in the rain. Choose the one that makes the most sense based on your family size, allowing extra capacity so you can keep your clothing inside without being cramped.

You can use blankets from home or buy sleeping bags to make your bed. If choosing sleeping bags, pick a model that is rated at least 20*F lower than the coldest temperature you expect to encounter. You can always unzip the bag if it gets too warm, or sleep on top. Again, Coleman makes some decent fair-weather sleeping bags, also look at Kelty and Slumberjack. Expect to pay $50 and up for a decent sleeping bag, typically the more money you spend the smaller the bag will be when packed away.

Whether you use blankets or a sleeping bag you will want to have some padding underneath you. Some use cots, which cost around $100 each. Some are ok with foam pads, costing from $8 to $50. Then there's self-inflating mattresses, $50-150, which use expandable foam and air for padding and insulation. Finally you can use regular blow-up air mattresses, which range from $20 to over $100 and are available in single, double, queen and king sizes. In colder weather, foam and self-inflating mattresses are the best choice, as cots and air mattresses provide no insulation value.

In terms of cooking, a two-burner Coleman propane stove costs around $50, and disposable 16oz propane canisters cost between $2.50 and $3.50, each will last about 2 days. You can bring pots, pans and cooking utensils from home. You might need to bring one or two folding tables (1 to cook at, the other to eat at, about $45 each) and folding chairs ($15 to 75 each, depending on model). And a battery-operated lantern ($40-75). Use disposable plates, bowls and eating utensils to save money and time cleaning. You will also need coolers to keep your food and beverages cold. The Coleman Xtreme coolers are the best available for the money, and I recommend you get two: one for food and the other for beverages.

Don't forget some trash bags, napkins, paper towels, dish soap and hand soap. And a collapsible trash can is convenient. Also, a first aid kit is a good idea.

All this stuff is available at most WalMart stores.

Where to go camping in BC?

MangaMan

Need an amazing camping experience this summer.

Any people here ever camp in British Columbia? Where would you recommend going? Details appreciated (why here, locations, maps, camp sites, etc)

Thanks!

Answer
A really neat place to camp in BC is Ruckle (sp??) PArk on Salt Spring Island you get to camp in a grassy area right on top of these rocks next to the ocean all night the sound of the wave on the rocks are just amazing. Salt spring has neat shops, a farmers market, and right by the park is a cool old farm and farm house you can tour. Nice walking trails too!

Where are the best places to camp in Alberta?

Q. We are looking for a place that is by a lake (if you can call it that they are more like sloughs here) with decent rates. No RV places please we are all young and don't mind roughing it... a bit.
I would prefer if you have personal experience staying there not just hearsay.
Thanks a million

Answer
k...

I live in Lethbridge I go to the University, I camp lots in Southern Alberta. But I'm from Strathmore originally, and I love camping so I'm gonna name my 4 favourite camping spots in Alberta (I haven't camped much in Northern Alberta, so I can't comment on that).

1. Waterton Lakes
- Great party town in the summer time... can't really go too crazy at the campsite though.
- The campsite is in the middle of the town, but it's really convenient. Take boat rides into the States, EXCELLENT HIKING. you can climb mountains safely with no experience as well.
- Way cheaper than Banff.
- downside is the lake is way too cold to swim in.

2. Wyndham Provincial Park
- Near Carseland. Doesn't seem like anything too special at first (it's in a river valley with the Bow flowing through it). But great parties at the campsite. Tons of trees, huge campsites, just generally amazing.

3. St. Mary's Reservoir
- Between Magrath and Cardston.
- Awesome view of the mountains, campsite is free most of the time.
- I usually camp here to fish, great walleye in the resevoir. the Lake is clean, there are boaters on it, and it's not too cold.
- Borders the Blood Indian Reserve, so lots of them camp there. They may seem sketchy at first, but trust me, they are an awesome bunch! Great people, great times.

4. Picklejar Lakes/Kananaskis
- I forget exactly how to get there, a buddy of mine knew the path. You'll have to ask around
- Not very well known, nobody there... you have to portage to get there ... no roads = no vehicles.
- Very secluded.. semi-dangerous... but spectacular! Especially if you enjoy fishing (that's why they call it picklejar lakes, exaggerated from the notion you can dip a picklejar in the lake and get fish).
- Lake is kind of cold, but not TOO bad. If you like portaging and roughing it up alot you'll love this place.
- Free.

I'll include a 5th becuase Picklejar may be off limits or you may not want something to that extreme.

5. Travers Dam/ Little Bow
- Little Bow is near Milo (it's actually a huge Resevoir and covers alot of Vulcan County).
- Great place, really beautiful. Good Prairie camping.
- If you basically want to make use of a lake you can go nuts here. Be careful during peak season though.. lots of boaters.

If I were you, though, I would choose areas in BC. Near Cranbrook you got Moyie Lake, that's not bad. Further in you get Kootenay Lake, check out Nelson, Creston, .. take a free ferry ride.... maybe even go north through the Slocan Valley to Nakusp. i would recommend that WAY before I'd recommend anything I just mentioned.

Private Camp Grounds in BC?

Dylan

me and 5 other friends are considering going camping in British Collumbia (or jasper Alberta) and are wondering if it is possible to get a more private campgrounds. we were thinking of literally camping in the woods instead of an rv park or anything. it would be amazing if it was by a beach but perfect of it were by the ocean (if we pick BC) we are going for a week and are all 18 so we arent packing loads of cash (but we will each have about $200 to spend on campground) if possible list all sites you can. please and thank you :)

Answer
Start here http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/explore/map.html These are inexpensive Government parks.
Most land belongs to someone. If you are well behaved and polite you can ask if you find a nice place you may get a spot for free from the land owner. RESPECT their generosity so others can enjoy in the future.

This is an excellent guide for camp grounds in Alberta. Go to the bottom of page They will MAIL you a copy
http://travelalberta.com/Trip%20Essentials/Vacation%20Guides.aspx

You will need to have more money to cross the border and proper Identification
There are restrictions on foods you can bring across both ways may just want to shop for groceries on each side of the border. Budget$50-$100 per day for food gas and so on.It is not necessary to CARRY CASH you can use your bank card check on what the fee is to use it in Canada. Travelling away from the border area you should use Canadian money best place to exchange is at a bank. You can do this before you cross or after. Probably cheapest at YOUR bank. Bring a CREDIT CARD for EMERGENCIES Check your cell phone plan for the cost of using your phone in Canada. LIMITED service in some mountain areas.

Enjoy your visit. Look on you tube many videos of B.C. and Alberta

Edit you can have alcohol in Alberta if you are 18 but not in B.C.

Camping is all about bonding with friends and family in the outdoors. It's like a break from all the electronics that we don't even need. Is the Harley cult worldwide?

ninebadthi

Last week in Yellowstone I ran into this big group of Harley guys who looked like the real deal, grey beards, handle bar mustaches, well worn leathers, only they had Swiss flags attached to their hogs and they were all talking presumably in Swiss. Very weird. Wonder if they allow Harleys to hold up traffic on the autobon.

Answer
yeah you see a lot of Europeans & other people riding all over the western U.S. in the summer.
one year at sturgis there was a large group of Austrailians (at least a hundred of them)that took over a whole section of glencoe campground. they had a lot of older harleys some of them real rat bikes or "jappers" as they call them. "she's a real japper aint she mate".they were a lot like American bikers from the 60's or 70's.
once ran into a pack of 20 or30 old harley & indian flat heads mostly from the 1930's headed east at about 50 mph on I-90 they were from the netherlands & headed back to new york to return home by ship after a month of riding all over the U.S. on those old flatty's!
never been there, but I read that big full dress harleys have a near cult status in Japan where there riden by clubs of wealthy mostly older men. (RUB's about the same as here).
strangest one I ever ran into was a guy who flew in from England with just a tent & gear in a back pack & camped out at sturgis for bike week. he never even had a bike! not sure he could even ride.
sturgis used to be a real interesting place before it was taken over by family's with little kids & thousands of old people who drive motor homes & golf carts.

Are there any concentration camps left?

Kelli

I was curious if there were any more concentration camps in Germany.

Sorry for the sad topic, but I was wondering!

Answer
Not in Germany. There are re-education camps in China. There are refugee camps and camps for the detention of illegal immigrants all over the place...

It depends on the precise definition of concentration camp.

trip to germany?

I want to go to Germany.. What do you think is the best place to go for vacation? The most interesting place?

Answer
As someone stated, it depends on what you are looking for. Here are some of my favorite places in Germany, and what they have to offer.

Berlin - this is obvious. It's rich, culturally, and historically. It's exciting and happening. It has a huge number of great museums and old buildings, as well as modern ones. Living History is palpable, with the wall having fallen only about 18 years ago. You can talk to people on the street that remember their first visit to the west.

The Rhine/Mosel valleys. The Rhine is the spiritual and traditional heart of Germany. Between the wine and the legends (Niebelungenlied, the Lorley, etc) and the great half timbered houses it is more than just one of Germany's main trade arteries.

Bavaria and Munich - This is the home of those beautiful fantasy castles of Ludwig's of the Romantic Road, and of Oktoberfest. Munich is sleepy compared to Berlin, but still exciting, and very historic. And for two weeks at the end of the summer it is huge!

A concentration camp - we need to remember, and I think visiting one is important. Good options are Sachsenhausen from the Berlin area, Dachau if in Munich, and Buchenwald if traveling through the center of the country.

A medieval town. Quendlenburg, Goslar (my favorite), or if you must Rothenburg, gives you a feeling for the medieval history of Germany and is darned picturesque, too.

Dresden - Florence on the Elbe, between the Zwinger and the rebuilt Frauenkirche, the glories of the Baroque era come alive in Dresden. It's also got it's share of great museums, and a lovely river to walk along.

The Black Forest - Whether you do the baths and casinos in Baden Baden or the university town of Freiburg, the Schwartzwald is a great place to just unwind a bit. Wines there are great and different from the rest of Germany, there are lakes and forests and lots of outdoor options. Take a hike, buy a cuckoo clock.

Cologne/Bonn - Between the churches, especially the Dom in Cologne, the largest church in Germany, and the heritage of the Roman empire this area west of the Rhine is the oldest part of Germany. Trier is too far away to be included in here locally, but it has the roman stuff too. The Roman museum is great. Bonn has the advantage also of a bunch of great museums from it's capitol of West Germany days.

Kelty Selida 4 vs. Kelty Gunnison 4.1?

JustinD

I am looking to buy either a SELIDA 4 or a Gunnison 4.1. I intend to use this tent as a family backpacker where we will split the weight amont 4 of us. The Selida is about a pound lighter, but the Gunnison has two vestibules.

Anyone have any thoughts on this decision?
Background: I am not a novice camper, but we are lightening up and moving toward family backpacking. I have owned and spent many nights in many tents. I too realize that this is a tight squeeze for two adults and two teens. Our normal car-camping tent is twice this size. However, the camping experience is a togetherness experience. There have been many rainy days in a tent playing cards. Looking back, I remember those trips as fondly as the ones with great weather.

Kelty seems to get no respect amongst the self proclaimed camping elites. Yet, nobody has anything specific to complain about. The zippers work. The price seems competitive. The flys are water proof. The weight compared to price seems pretty good.

Answer
Tape out a rectangle on your living room floor that's 8'4" x 6'10", which is the size of the Gunnison. Now try to arrange your family comfortably within this rectangle. Keep in mind that the walls slope inward so you'll lose a few inches unless you want to be right against the outer wall. I bet it will be a tight squeeze, even if two people are children.

If you're fine with that, you then need to figure out what to do with your gear. Some of it -- less than you think -- can be stored in the vestibules. Remember that you'll also need to leave room in the vestibule for you to enter and exit the tent. If you devote one vestibule for gear storage you might get by, but more likely you'll need to bring a tarp to store at least some of your gear outside. You'll want to do this anyhow to keep food and other scented items away from your tent to avoid attracting animals and insects.

I disagree that 8 pounds is too heavy for backpacking, particularly if you have two or more people to distribute the load. Besides, when you're family backpacking you're probably not planning on going long distances. Five or even ten miles with an 8-pound tent split two ways is manageable. And going with two tents such as the Hubba Hubba isn't going to save you much, as each Hubba Hubba weighs 4.3 pounds so that's still 8+ total (not to mention almost $600). I'd be a bit concerned using an ultralight tent such as the Hubba Hubba with kids, as the main tent body is primarily mesh that might tend to get damaged easily by rambunctious children.

I saw the Kelty Gunnison up-close yesterday at Campmor. I needed a new larger tent as I discovered my old 4-person dome -- which I haven't used in many years -- is no longer usable. I was looking for something comfortable for 2 adults and serviceable for 3, primarily for adventure camping (back-country 4WD camping), but could also be used for short-distance backpacking, and in the $200-300 price range. The Kelty Gunnison and Eureka Mountaineer 3XT were my main contenders. I wound up going with the Eureka because, although it was a bit smaller and heavier, it had a better fly design and heavier coating, plus I've also had good experiences with other Eureka tents.

Another tent worth considering is the Big Agnes Flying Diamond 4. At 9'2"x7'6" it was a true 4-person tent, and is also a 4-season design that weighs just under 9 pounds. Unfortunately, it has a fairly large pack size and that plus the $369 price tag didn't balance the extra floor space I might rarely need. But if you can divide the tent between two or more packs, the size and weight might be manageable for you and the price would be less than two separate tents.

What is the best quality tent I can buy for under $200?

Cat M

Requirements:

Must fit a king size air mattress (so it should be at least about 10 x10 so there's room around the mattress for bags and stuff)
Must have at least 3 large windows (but preferably 4 - one on each side including the front door)
Must NOT leak!
Preferably have a raised (tub) floor or whatever you call it - so that the floor seams are not right on the ground.

Please help me find a good tent for under $200. I have been searching like crazy but whenever I find something I like it either has bad reviews or is way too expensive.

Thanks

Answer
Well the expensive ones are most likely the ones that wont leak. Remember, you get what you pay for. Check out these tents, they seem pretty good. be sure to check out all the links below, some of the tents are a steal at the size.

I need help finding a good cheap at least 8 person tent!?

Hailey

I'm having a "camp out" sleepover in my backyard basically so my brothers and my mom and dad can't bug me. I already have a 7 person tent (it only fits 5) and I'm inviting 10 people so then there can be 5 people in each tent so I've looked on amazon and target and none of them are really in my price range and have the amount of space that I want. There is one (the Coleman Montana) but other than that I haven't really found anything. We're all really girly girls too so there has to be at least a little bit of space which is why I want a 7 or 8 person tent. I'm paying for it cause that was the only way I could talk my mom and dad into letting me have 10 girls sleepover in tents that they'd have to buy. Since I just bought a new laptop and iPod I'm kinda low on money so maybe in the $100-125 range would be best.

Thanks!
H

Answer
Target has other models available. All you need is a simple cabin tent because you are not assembling your tent for bad weather. You will have a fair-weather overnight with your friends in the backyard, so a rugged tent is not needed. All you need is some privacy.

Embark Nine-Person Tent, $155.

The Embark 9-person cabin tent is designed with a screen porch that lets you enjoy the beauty of the outdoors. It has 2 rooms that offer sufficient space to accommodate an entire family. Made from polyester and polyethylene, this tent is weather resistant and flame retardant. Its zippered storm flaps and welded floor seam offer added safety, security and comfort. This cabin camping tent has a D-style door for easy entry and exit. Its color-coded assembly system allows for hassle-free pitching.

Coleman Eight-Person Bayside Tent, $140.

With its cabin-like design and plenty of room to stand and move, the Coleman Bayside 8-person tent gives you the feeling of home at the campsite. Patented hinged door offers quick and easy access inside and out. Designed for any weather with a strong steel and fiberglass frame. Oversized awning gives you extra protection from sun or rain. Plus, welded floors and inverted protected seams keep you and your gear dry. Fits 2 queen size airbeds. Snag-free setup in just 15 minutes.

Which one is good, a dome tent or a cabin tent?

Ivy

I want to purchase a camping tent for family camping trip. What shape of the tent should I buy, dome tent or cabin tent?

Answer
Free standing domes are typically the easiest type of tent to set up and are great for sandy soil or concrete surfaces where staking it out would be impossible. However in windy conditions these types tend to flop around a lot more and leak more in heavy rains.

Cabin tents offer the most room generally and offer greater design options. Depending on the size of the tent you can have multiple rooms for privacy and screened in porches all kinds of designs are available. I prefer Coleman brands in this category,

Maine or New Hampshire camping sites?

David

I am looking to find a camping site in Maine or New Hampshire that is pretty secluded and accessible for kids without adult supervision. Most camp sites require someone 18 or older. Are there any places I can go to without adult supervision? If so, which ones?

Answer
national forests and parks do not have an age restriction, however with out an adult present there may be curfew laws that apply and of course do anything illegal such as drinking booze and get caught well it is a LONG ride home.

Im looking for good secluded camping sites in the Northeast. VT would be ideal. It has to be a tent campsite on a lake or river. Seclusion is the key. Nearby hiking would be great too.

Thanks all!
