I'm finally taking my family on our first camping trip. But I'm on a tight budget and can't afford new camping gear or used for that matter. I looked it up on craigslist and it's still too expensive for me. Is there any place that can rent me the equipment for the weekend?
Answer
I'm not sure exactly what kind of "gear" you need, but try calling REI (Recreation Equipment, inc.)
REI Lincoln Park Store
(312) 951-6020
1466 N Halsted St, Chicago, IL 60642
I'm pretty sure they rent pup tents, sleeping bags, backpacks, camp stoves, etc. and they have other Chicagoland locations:
Oakbrook Terrace, IL
Northbrook, IL
Schaumburg, IL
_________
and it looks like they are having a free "Camping Basics" event this week (06-04-2012 at the Northbrook location and 06-06-2012 in Schaumburg)

Help. Need ideas for vacation coming up in 3 weeks?
Uncle Penn
Really waited too long to plan this.
I live in San Jose Area. Would like to go somewhere for 3 or 4 days within 3 hours drive of San Jose. Somewhere where there are cabins or motel near a lake where there is swimming and maybe other activities would be nice. But open to lots of other things. Should be something a 6 year old boy would like too.
Please don't suggest anything in San Francisco.
Thanks.

The SJMerc said last week that reservations for the San Jose Family Camp at Yosemite have been slow this year because the camp was closed for a couple of years due to repairs and remodeling. They would most likely have room this summer. They have all kinds of family activities and have been well thought of in the San Jose Community for years.
From their website:
San Jose Family Camp is pleased to announce we will be opening for the 2012 Season beginning with Fish Camp at the end of April.
San José Family Camp is located in the heart of the Sierras near Yosemite National Park, just east of Groveland, California. Family Camp is situated on 47 acres of leased land from the U.S. Forest Service. The Stanislaus National Forest and the middle fork of the Tuolumne River serve as the scenic backdrop to this mountain playground. Family Camp provides a retreat where guests of all ages can fish, hike, swim, participate in organized programs or just sit back, relax and take it easy. It's a great experience for the entire family! So come up and rent a tent. During the Summer Family Session, the Camp provides three meals a day to campers, along with supervised recreational activities. Groups are welcome to rent out the Camp during the pre and post sessions. For questions, please contact staff at 408-794-6523 or Familycamp@sanjoseca.gov
