Camping in Washington?

jhredmondw

I need to find a good place to camp in Washington about 2-3 hours away from Seattle (prefer East of Seattle). I have already gone to the Washington State Park and Recreation website so please don't give me a link to that. I want somewhere specific where you may have had a good experience. (Lake chelan and Lake Wenatchee are all booked). Please don't give me a link unless it is to a specific camping place you have been. I just want names of places to go. Thanks.

Answer
If you were willing to head south, there are some nice places around Mt. St. Helen's, just outside of Cougar, WA. Three I have stayed at are Panther Creek, Beaver, and Paradise Creek. Here are the links.

The final link is for campgrounds in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. If you click the link, on the right side of the page, it has campground information by district. Those are all east of Seattle, but I've never stayed at any of them. Good luck!

Where are some good places to camp in Washington state?

virile rom

... where I wouldn't be bothered by anyone?

Answer
The absolute coolest place I have ever camped is at La Push, Washington. You can camp on the beach and it is beautiful. Here are pictures and websites:

where are the cheapest caravan sites in the uk?

Helen C

Hi I have a family of 4 including my partner and I and two children aged 14 (girl) and 11 (boy) I am also due to have another boy on the 10th August. I would like to know of any good touring caravan sites to visit in the summer of 2008 with my family, we are on a budget so we will need a cheap site ideal for families we live in the west midlands england. Does anyone know of any great sites fitting our needs. Thanks all.

Answer
Join the Caravan Club. It has some brilliant sites with all mod cons and it also has a network of much smaller sites called CL's (certified locations). They are only allowed a maximum of 5 vans at a time and nowadays a great deal of them have electricity...the one we stayed at in Devon last year was on a farm and had the water points right next to the leccy outlets (protected of course!)
http://www.caravanclub.co.uk/
Costs vary as to what standard of site you are on

You could also try the Camping and Caravan Club...

Any good wilderness camping sites in NJ or PA?

joe k

I live in the NJ/PA area and am in search of a new wilderness camping area. In south jersey, Wharton State Forest offers some of the only sites where you actually have to hike/canoe 1-3 miles to get to the campsite. This is a nice woodsy area but lacks a good swimming lake (great for woodsy day hikes while camping though). North of Trenton is Round Valley Reservoir - my favorite so far. A 3-5 mile hike or slightly shorter canoe and you almost feel completely alone with a whole lake to yourself.

I am in search of another campsite in the NJ/PA area that requires a hike (helps to weed out some of the "cheaters"... ie. little kids... and increases the "away from civilization" feeling) but also leaves you with a nice view or nice place to swim and feel alone for a couple of days/nights. Preferably, I would prefer to have a campsite that is not immediately next to another and is at least somewhat away from civilization.

Anything in the Eastern PA/NJ area?
Does anybody know of a good place along the Appalachian Trail in the PA/NJ area where a good 2-3 day camping trip can take place? Having a campfire is a major part of camping but I have heard that they are only allowed in certain areas on the AT. Ideally, I'd like to find an area within a 1-4 mile hike to leave the tent for a couple of nights where a fire can be built.

Answer
The only WILDERNESS areas in PA are in the Allegheny National Forest. There is also the Great Swamp NWR and Brigantine Wilderness, also managed by the US Fish & Wildlife Service.

There are several Natural and Wild areas in the Delaware State Forest (PA) but most of them are off limits for camping. You can check the state bureau of forestry website for more info. http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/forestry/stateforests/index.aspx

There are plenty of good backpacking trails in Eastern PA, but none of them are in a Wilderness area. Better opportunities for remote camping and backpacking exist in the central part of the state. There is the Old Loggers Path and the Loyalsock Trail as well a World's End State Park. Most of the state parks and trails such as The Horseshoe Trail and Thunder Swamp can be very congested due to their closeness to the Philly/NJ border. In short, don't count on finding anything remote east of the Susquehanna River. Hickory Run, Promised Land, Beltzville, and Rickett's Glen State Parks are usually very crowded during peak camping season.

Similarly, the AT in Pennsylvania largely crosses state game lands (no camping at all), state forest lands (usually no fires), private lands, and easements given to the ATC/NPS by private individuals. Due to relocations and weather conditions, fire restrictions change often. The current AT Guidebook for PA will give fairly accurate info, but you could hike in 7 miles to a campsite or shelter only to find that the property owners or the state has posted a fire restriction. The section from PA-183 to Swatara Gap is fairly remote. I've hiked it several times and usually only run into a handful of other hikers. The only places I've ever found crowded are the areas inside the Delaware Water Gap and around the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, but I've hiked the entire state several times and can honestly say I've never had the feeling of remoteness. You can almost always see lights from towns and on quiet nights can hear cars and noise from down in the valleys.

If you want to find a good swimming hole check here:
http://www.swimmingholes.org
Some places listed there have camping areas.

Personally, I'd head up to the Adirondacks or Vermont. There are many more remote areas to camp and lots of great swimming holes. So save up a few more PTO or Vacation days and spend a few more hours in the car. It's worth it.

Remote camping sites in Southern California?

Nick Lush

Every year my brother and some friends take me and my other brother camping for our birthdays in October. This year we were going to Joshua Tree, but with the government shutdown I does not look like that is possible but anyways what are some other good camping sites that are very remote in so cal, in other words we dont want to see any other people for 2 days. Places with hiking/climbing and some trails for off roading are a plus.and a nice view too
Last year we took the 5 hour drive up to bishop and only saw about 3 other people there and they were hunters on their way out. Not to sound rude but we really want to be the only campers where ever we stay.

Answer
Remote camping is still possible, only federal lands campgrounds are closed. State and county parks remain open, a good remote destination in the desert is Anza Borrego, or the Calico hills area

@ Note: All federal lands are closed, that means all National Forests, Parks, Monuments, BLM lands, Preserves, Conservation area's etc. to all uses no camping even in dispersed area's, no day use such as picnicking, fishing or hikeing. If it's federal land in any way shape or form you cannot be on it, end of story.

Whats a some beautiful places to camp in the USA that are close to the east coast?

jesse wood

No where hot (Not in the south) washington is an exception..

Answer
I live in North Carolina and one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to was the Blue Ridge Mountains in NC. They have lots of places to camp (just google them)-- I know it's in the South but it really doesn't get that humid there in the summer. We live in the Southern part of the state where it gets real humid and we go there to cool off. : )

Where is the best place on the east coast to camp on the beach?

Courtney

I'm trying to take a camping trip next week and the place we picked in North Carolina just doesn't seem that great. It's completely isolated on it's own little island. As nice as that sounds, I want to be able to go a store to get food or do something at night.

I would like to be able to literally open up my tent, walk a few feet and be in the ocean. Any suggestions would be great.

Answer
Well I believe i know where your talking and yes it is very isolated, I want to try it there myself, but don't have a 4x4 set up to do beach travel yet. It is going to be hard to find a place on the beach that is not over ran with RVs. You might want to check these sites out, you might be able to find what your looking for. If you find a nice place let me know, I might try it. I don't think your going to find a location like the island your talking about. There are just not many places like that one around. Sorry I could not be of more help.

Tents for family camping?

B

Does anyone know where I could buy a tent ( online or in store ) that would be fire retardant FREE . ..?
I really need a new tent but I want to get one with no fire retardants.

Answer
I believe most tents have fire retardant. Your best bet would be one of the canvas tent suppliers. They make tepees and period tents from canvas and some are made to order. I'll bet they make a tent and then add the fire retardant. They would probably be the mfg. that has what you require.

Are there any good camping places to take kids 10-14 in Missouri?

MommaDoo

We want to take our kids who have never camped somewhere family oriented. My husband and I both grew up tent camping.

Answer
We live in the Missouri Ozarks and have 5 children ages 9, 11, 12, and two 14 year olds. Our favorite place to take our family is Alley Springs campground on the Jacks Fork river. It is about 6 miles west of Eminence. It offers plenty of sites, some with electric, hot showers, flat level sites with paved roads for bike riding, and a good swimming hole. About 1/2 mile away is the Alley Springs Mill and spring with two hiking trails, one that goes around the spring area, and then a more difficult one that goes up to a lookout that is above the spring. It is a beautiful place. Hope this helps!

where is a good camping place?

Lucy

i'm never gone camping and will love to go with my family. As been the first time I'm looking for a good place safe for kids near Miami, Fl
Thanks,
Lucy

Answer
Camping is a great way to connect with family. There is a great app i use here in North Carolina called Pocket Ranger that helps you find the perfect state park to camp at since you can narrow down your choices by activities you would like.

The pro version of this app is great for hiking too since you can GPS your location without needing cell service!

Hope this helps

I'm pretty young and I went camping in canada but we had lots of tech. now we are going camping again with a nother family and I want real camping in a tent with no tech. at all but I need help.I'm holding a pencil and paper. please throw in some suggestions

Answer
Ok, you want sleeping bags, bug spray, one of those propane stoves to cook on (that's not very tech -- you can grill out with charcoal if you prefer), an iron skillet for cooking, bring along lots of drinks (esp water), maybe some pancake mix (that won't spoil), some marshmallows, some soup mix or can soup that won't spoil, and a chest with your cold stuff.. maybe some hot dogs, hamburger patties, cheese, buns, bacon, etc. What you need depends on how long you are staying, too. OH, dont forget matches. If you're getting near water, bring some fishing gear. That's about it. Have fun!!!

If you want beach then look at the Big 4 or top tourist parks. I've stayed at The broadwater tourist park on the gold Coast and that is really nice.

wavebreak island Qld, camping help?

Nathan

Hey everyone,

me and a couple of friends are planning on going camping on wavebreak island for the long weekend.

just wondering if you're allowed to just pitch a tent wherever you like over there?
and is there firewood? thats all i can really think of at the moment! bring on the weekend

Answer
The only place in USA where citizens camp wherever they please for free
is in National Forest; open fire isn't allowed and Federal District Offices
can inform you of other rules that are being enforced by paid staff. There
are other Federal, State, County and municipal property posted regarding
public usage. These lands are regulated and supervised. Private property
is just that and either you have use authorization from owner or suffer from
legal consequences. American judicial and penal systems are crowded
with people who never honestly thought they would experience either. You
get one telephone call after arrival at jail; decide now who best to contact.

where to go RV camping this week in South East Texas?

Alex Hiep

Looking for suggestion from anyone who may have done this before. I am looking to take my family on our first RV camping in the winter. I have teens and youngsters. Are there any place to RV this week in the Texas: Houston, Austin, San Antonio that have nice scenic and activities like horse back riding or ATV rental? Hunting would be nice too.

Answer
That area has many good spots. any State park is excellent. Garner State Park is very nice but call first as I am not sure they are open during winter. that place is usually hoping during the summer. any place near San antonio and you can drive to the city and visit the Alamo and hang around downtown for a day. Very nice city. Investigate Lake Travis that is a very nice lake, I am sure somewhere on it is RV camping.

Camping places in georgia?

Claire

Me and my friend want to spend a weekend and go camping. We don't have a camper, just my truck and maybe a tent and we are 17. Know any good places that has hiking there, or close and is just a relaxing place to be? Btw we live south of Atlanta so the south side would be preferred

Answer
Drive on GA 155 South. Proceed 0.26 mile east on Greenwood Industrial Pkwy.
Cross railroad tracks and park on north side. 0.95 mile north on shiny tracks
takes you into the Norfolk Southern Training Academy. 1.40 miles north past the
Academy the old M Line begins. Don't walk toward the Academy. Stand looking
southward from Parkway. You'd be correct to assume this portion as disused.
Don't flunk any students by being run over by their train. Walk with frequent
glances behind you. Pass a spur turning right. Pass a spur turning left. The M
Line will cross the Bill Gardner Pkwy first. Next is Luella Rd. Then the GA 155
crossing. You'll lose the rails shortly after going under heavy electrical cables
and M Line becomes submerged in asphalt. Turn right and walk to first cross-
street. Turn left and walk to the asphalt turn-around circle ahead. The M Line
continues as a narrow path atop gravel embankment in woodland. It will cross
Johnson Road. At this moment remember President Franklin D. Roosevelt also
did this route more than fifty times. See what that President saw. At woodland
end the rail bed turns into open pasture. You'd be wise to step westward onto
Trestle Road outside Griffin, Ga. Walk south. At Towaliga River road bridge look
east to see M Line span the water on a high wood trestle. Go south on Trestle
Road as M Line will cross just short of junction with another country road. Turn
to your right into wooded embankment. That will eventually cross over Teamon.
Stop. Walk road east a tad and look south into open field. Yes, see a steam
locomotive built in 1892 for the Houston & Texas Central RR. Then return to the
wooded route. Cross two more byways. Follow the rusty rails over N. 2nt St.
Another 0.30 mile onward is lovely view of adjacent reservoir. I suppose one could
soak there but I'd keep an eye open for snakes in the water. By this time you'll
also know why snake-proof boots and chaps are needed for Georgia rail hiking.
The next crossing is North Hill Road. Private homes sneak up close to your path.
Then comes Pinewood Avenue. You'll walk past the east end of Lakeview Street
and 0.25 mile onward your walk of M Line ends amid Griffin, Ga. Cross rail junction
ahead to enter southwest end of Railroad Av. While climbing a fence beware of any
Railroad Bulls. They'll enforce property laws. See the Old Atlanta Highway. 'Phone
somebody for a return ride. Or, walk cafe food off over the M Line again. No, folks,
I have no idea where the M Line may find you camping. You probably are safe
from rail traffic between Johnson and N. Hill. There's some solitude thereabouts.

Best Camping in Arizona?

jancanyon

Hi! My friends and I were going to go hiking in a week to Havasu Falls and then camp out. The only problem is that one girl hurt her back (but already paid for the plane ticket to Arizona). Is there an awesome place to camp in Arizona that doesnt involve hiking 10 miles down a canyon with a heavy pack?

Answer
There are many great places to go camping in Arizona that do not require backpacking. The biggest limiting factor for next weekend is weather since it is already getting a bit warm for camping in the lower desert areas.

The rim country north of Payson is pretty nice. There are a number of small lakes along the rim where you camp out either by the lake or just about anywhere in the nearby National Forest. The few established campgrounds (all of which are pretty 'rustic') will be pretty busy with the three day weekend, but if you don't mind just throwing a tent off the side of a dirt road somewhere out in the forest than your options are pretty limitless. Areas to consider include Woods Canyon Lake, Knoll Lake, Bear Canyon Lake and Will Springs Lake. All are just above the rim, north of Payson. If you are not familiar with the area, than you will need either Forest Service maps (Coconino and Tonto) or the DeLorme Arizona Atlas.

Another neat area that is at nice cool elevations is the area around Aztec Peak in the Sierra Ancha Mountains east of Lake Roosevelt. Along the road from Lake Roosevelt to Heber (AZ288) is a turn off to Workman's Creek and Aztec Peak. Worksman's Creek usually has at least a trickle of water even in summer and at 8,000 feet elevation, Aztec Peak is quite cool in the pines with excellent views. This is pretty far off the beaten path (about 3 hours from Phoenix) and you should have maps with you.

Just about any place that is covered by National Forest will allow you to camp out anywhere you want down a dirt road (unless there are extreme fire restrictions in place). The biggest challenge is find a nice place near water - those places are much more rare in Arizona and will generally be popular with other people too.

Finally, I might note that if you have the money for it, you should be able to hire a helicopter to take your friend down to Havasu village near the falls and campground (there is a helicopter service that routinely takes tourists in and out of the canyon). That way the rest of you could hike in and she could meet you there. Just a thought. A somewhat cheaper option would be to have them pack her gear in on a mule (again, you can hire this service from the Indians) to make it easier on her. The first mile of trail is pretty rough (descending into the canyon), but the remaining hike along the stream bed is long, but not really difficult.

Homemade dinners for camping?

Jendub

I'm trying to get some different ideas! We're going camping in the desert this weekend and I want to prepare some meals from home so its less of a hassel when we're there. We won't have power :( Would like some ideas other than the typical burgers, dogs and sandwiches. Thanks!

Answer
Walking Tacos---- make them in a bag of Fritos---in the bag----crunch the fritos, add pre-cooked and rewarmed taco meat, cheese, lettuce, sour cream, hot sauce, I like sliced avacado too. Eat with a fork right out of the bag.

Cold fried chicken like from kentucky fried or popeyes

bake cookies ahead of time for dessert or treats.

We usually have steaks one night. I will marinade them at home and store them in freezer bags in the cooler until we cook them. Freezer bags are stronger and less likely to break. If you use regular bags, then double bag them in case of leaks.

Cereal and milk are easy breakfast. You can also make baggie omlettes if you want. Break an egg or two in a strong freezer baggie and add things like cheese, ham, veggies---anything you like. You boil water and place the freezer bag of stuff in the water to cook until stiff. You must use the strong freezer bags for these so they don't melt in the boiling water.

Hunting/camping/fishing in or near Kentucky?

Jon

Me and a few other guys want to go camping this summer. Not at a campground but we want to go out deep in the woods and clear out a brush and set up a campsite. We aslo want to rough it by trying to get our own food by hunting and fishing. Is there a good place to do this and what could we hunt? Also it be nice if there was a plce to swim nearby.

Answer
Well young Daniel Boone, the National forests near you will let you camp in dispersed areas for up to 15 days, just stay away from any established campgrounds by 1/4 mile and 200 ft away from water and you should be ok. Now for the other matter you will need hunting and fishing license to take any fish or game and only whatever is in season for the time your planning your adventure. Here is the contact info you will need to begin your planning,
