We are planning a camping trip in july, and well i was wonding if we need to spend $100 plus bucks, or can we get a way with $40 at walmart?.... Whats the difference and do we really need to pay that much?...

Answer
No you don't need to spend that much for good quality. Coleman Tents makes good quality tents for less then $100. the bigger the tent the higher the price of course they make a 9x7 tent that will fit a family of 4 for $79.us
http://www.coleman.com/coleman/colemancom/detail.asp?product_id=2000001975&categoryid=11020&brand=

It has a stay dry guarantee and is built to last I have had mine for 5+ years now and it's still as good as the day I bought it and I use it for Boy scouts now that tells how well there made. You can spend less their two man Sundome is $49.us. So depending on the size you need is the price you pay. And you can get these at Walmart or Kmart and Sears.

Do you have A tent link this?

Dane_62

I'm considering buying a Northwest Territory 18 x 17 ft. Eagle River Dome Tent w/Screen Porch from Kmart for 94.00 ($56 off). (link http://www.kmart.com/shc/s/p_10151_10104_9990000023613611P?vName=Fitness+%26+Sports)

However I have not been able to find any reviews on it. I'm looking for someone who owns this tent, has used this tent, or owns a similar Northwest Territory tent. Please let me know what you think of it.

Also if you own any tent close to this size 18X17X6.5 do you have trouble finding campsites where you can set up a tent this big?

Answer
I think you get what you pay for, and this brand, from this store that isn't very much. It might last a couple of seasons, but I wouldn't put it through a rain storm or any significant wind.

Also the size seems way overkill. If I was car camping with a large family I'd prefer if we kept it two, or maybe three, people to a nice sturdy dome tent. Then you could put up a screen tent for sitting around together. Those smaller tents could also be used for other things, like kids camp outs, backpacking trips, while this giant tent is only good for one thing.

What is the best thing to do for planning a trip to Great Lakes, Illinois by plane?

Angela B

My finace is in the Navy and is graduating out of bootcamp on Aug 18. I never traveled out of louisiana, so really don't know what to do as far as planning this. Could someone help please?

Answer
My niece just graduated from boot camp 2 weeks ago. After Pass and Review all graduates will be allowed off of the base for the first time since arriving. They can't go more than 50 miles from the base. That pretty much leaves Chicago. It seemed like every recruit ended up at the mall of all places. I guess mall deprivation runs rampant at boot camp! Be aware that they cannot bring cell phones back onto the base, and in fact they will and should be aware of exactly what they are allowed to bring back before they leave. They are going to have to report back to base by 9pm Fri. and if they are one of the lucky ones not getting shipped out Sat. morning they can be off base from 8AM--8pm Sat. As far as sightseeing, be prepared for crowds both Friday and Sat. at all of the major tourist sites. Navy Pier has great dining, Brookfield Zoo is a really great zoo, and Chicago has some of the best museums, particularly The Museum of Science and Industry. Please check out Great Lakes Online website, it will give you lots of information on lodging, and many of the hotels closest to the base offer discounts for family and friends coming for graduation and also offer a shuttle service to the base. Chicago will be hot, hot, hot in August so dress comfortably, and have a great time.

Where is the best place to stay in the Seqouias after the recent fires?

Amber0527

I am coming from Southern California and want something that is located close to where I can fish, swim, hike, shower, possibly check out caves, etc. It will just be my boyfriend and I, so we don't need a huge campsite but we def want to camp outdoors and not do the cabin/hotel thing. Any suggestions of places to camp and things to do would be greatly appreciated!

Answer
Go to Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Park. It is not in the fire area. The fires were in the northern and eastern parts of Yosemite. The groves in Yosemite are much smaller than those is Sequoia Kings Canyon NP.
http://www.nps.gov/seki/index.htm

Enter Sequoia National Park from the south, CA Route 198. It doesn't allow RV's or trailers so there is less traffic. It's a mountain road that climbs thousands of feet, has great hairpin turns and the views are spectacular.

There is lodging and campsites at Three Rivers, CA and it is close to the entrance.

Besides the Sequoias, there is a rare marble cave in the park (most caverns are limestone). Crystal Cave is accessed by a picturesque half-mile trail that leads to the Merced river valley.

Moro Rock is a great hike. You climb nearly 400 stone steps to the top of the barren rock (6,725-foot elevation)

How much wine can you carry into Mexico?

family camping tents canada
on Thor 12 Person Family Camping Tent Extra Large Room New - Buy Tent ...
family camping tents canada image

We're looking to bring wine to a wedding in Cabo San Lucas and need to find out if there is a limit on the bottles we can flying in with and whether there is a duty per bottle.

Answer
I'm finding conflicting information on how much you can bring in, but I think the information below is the most accurate because it was updated in January and the detail is a little greater. But notice this caveat first:

There are limits on how much merchandise you carry into Mexico and these limits seem to change frequently. Tourists are rarely questioned in detail about what they are bringing.
http://www. citi-guide .com/mexico/ m-immigration .asp

When you travel to Mexico by airplane or by ship, you are allowed to import (duty free) a total of items worth up to $300 per person (including children). For example, a family of five members consisting of the parents and three minor children can import up to $1,500 worth of merchandise, duty free. However, if you are traveling by land, you are allowed only $ 50 .00 worth of merchandise duty free.

When you bring items whose value exceeds the above mentioned limits, but not more than $1, 000 .00, you can pay the taxes yourself. If your merchandise is worth more than $1, 000 .00, you must use the services of a customs broker.

If the flight by which you arrive come from the border zone you are allowed only $ 50 .00 of new items per person.

If you are a resident in Mexico you are allowed to bring in free of duty the following items for your personal use: One camera or video camera if it can be carried by the passenger; up to 12 rolls of new film, video cassettes, or photographic materials; one article of sports equipment or a used set of equipment that can be hand carried; books and magazines; 20 packages of cigarettes or 50 cigars or 250 grains of tobacco; 3 liters of wine, beer or liquor (adults only); medicines for personal use or with a Doctor's prescription, if it is a controlled substance; and the suitcases to carry baggage.

If you are a resident of a foreign country (USA, Canada, or other), in addition to the above you are allowed to take a set of binoculars, a photographic camera, a television, a radio or radio-cassette, tape or disc player, up to 20 recording tapes or discs, a typewriter, a portable computer, a musical instrument that can be hand carried, a camping tent and camping equipment," a set of fishing equipment, a pair of skis, 5 used toys for minors, two tennis rackets, a motorless boat less than 5 1/2 meters long or surf board with or without a sail.

If you are inspected and are discovered with items of greater value than is permitted and you have not paid duty on them, you risk having to pay a high fine (of up to four times the value of each item). If weapons or ammunition are found, the penalty could include imprisonment.
http://www. drivemeloco .com/ start .htm

If the cost of your goods exceeds the franchise but is under 1000 U.S dollars or its equivalent in other currencies, you must pay 17% of the total value, and fill in the âforeign commerce contribution paymentâ form.

If the cost of your goods excluding the franchise is over 1000 U.S. dollars or its equivalent in other currencies, you must hire the services of a custom broker, for the importation procedures. (ask at customs where to find it).
http://www. gotosonora .com/ legal-affair .htm

So from the above, it sounds like 3 liters is the limit, but you can carry in more and pay a fine of 17% of the value up to $1,000. Any more than that and you'd need to get a broker.

I hope that answers it for you!

Good Places to Fish for Pike in Minnesota?

Thomas Gra

I am looking into planning a fishing trip to Minnesota, if you have ever taken such a trip (or if you live there) can you please tell me some lakes, towns, hotels, etc that would be good to go to so that I can fish Northern Pike.

Answer
As others have said Pike are easily caught all over the State.

However, trophy-sized Pike (Pike over the 38" mark) are only caught regularly on the border of Canada.

I don't think anyone can deny that the "border lakes" of Canada offer the best of ANY type of fishing in MN.

These lakes include: Lake of the Woods, Rainy Lake, Gunflint Lake, Loon Lake, Etc.

I try to make a trip to the Gunflint Lake area every year to catch Bass, Walleye, Pike & Lake Trout. If you want a pristine environment and limits of fish in the 50's-100's PER day, try any of the Border Lakes.

Here's where I go: Go to http://www.gunflintpines.com/camp_cabins.shtml

We get a Camping Cabin.

Camping cabins work well for me and my family because they are inexpensive; eliminate the hassle of tent and camp set-up; are more secure and comfortable than ANY traditional tent camping; have electric facility's for heaters/electric coolers/hot-plates/ Etc and generally sleep better after a hard day of fishing.

Due to the many lakes in the area (some lakes see a HANDFUL of fishermen all year), your odds on catching a number of trophy Pike is pretty secure.

Go check it out.

Best campgrounds in the Adirondack region?

Star2008

Can someone please recommend a nice campground to camp in the Adirondack region?

Answer
Anywhere in the Adirondacks is a good place for camping. What do you like...hiking, fishing, swimming, hunting in season, etc? There should be some sites on the net that you could peruse. Best bet would be to contact the New York State Chamber of Commerce. They would be too glad to send you literature. Bet they have a web site. Watch out for the bears, racoons, rattlesnakes and other wild animals while camping. They'll get into all your stuff and destroy it too.. lol. Nice trip I took included the Thousand Islands, little Tupper, Port Henry(ferry to Vt) and back at Crown Point and Fort Ticonderoga. If you ever wanted to visit a fort, this would be the one.

What are some good places to camp on a trip from San Francisco to San Diego?

BB

I'm going to be traveling by car from San Francisco to San Diego over the course of a week and a half, camping in a tent along the way. Since I have a week to make this trip, it doesn't matter if I take a roundabout route (for example, going inland all the way to the Sierra Nevadas wouldn't bother me).

What are some good places for me to camp on the trip? I prefer to be as secluded as possible, to get away from it all. Also, the cheaper the better!

Thanks!

Answer
As I see it, you have 2 choices: Beach route or inland route. Doing both would take you a lot more than a week.

If you want to head inland, you can always take off from S.F. and head to Lake Tahoe. It is about 5 hours to drive. Then, I'd head south into Yosemite. Your only downfall about these two places is that it is summer and you might be hard-pressed to find a campsite. NO JOKE--in Yosemite Valley you usually have to reserve a campsite 6 months in advance. You might have more luck finding sites that are outside the park. (From Lake Tahoe to Yosemite, take highway 395) After Yosemite you could either stick with the 395 and head to Death Valley, then Interstate 10 to Joshua Tree. You could also leave Yosemite on the 120 and head to Interstate 5, which can take you to places like King's Canyon and Sequoia National Park, and then into the LA area.

If you wanted to go the beach route, skip the 1 (it will take much, much more than a week) and go on the 101. It gives you easy access to Santa Cruz, Monterrey, Big Sur, and San Simeon (Hearst Castle is a must see!), Pismo Beach, Santa Barbara, The Santa Monica Mountains (you can hike there to see where the show MASH was filmed), Hollywood, and then to Interstate 5 which will drive down the Southern California coast and into San Diego.

My husband and I have done these trips many times and they are fabulous either way. It just depends on what you want to see. The coastal route offers many beach sites to camp. For a good reference on camping, I would recommend the book "California Camping;" that's our Bible.

Have fun!!!!

Calling Me Home

by Lyndon Lane, Goodooga, NSW

I can feel the souls of my ancestors calling me back home
To all the familiar places and tracks I once did roam
I can see my Grandmother's house at the end of Adams Street,
Where all the Aunties, Uncles and Cousins I did meet
To the banks of the Bokhara River running under the Richmond Bridge
You can hear the waters flow to the sound of an Elder's didge
I can smell the boogalies cooking in a camp oven at my Aunty's place
I can see the sun arising on the wrinkles of my Pop's face
I can recall how my uncle taught me how to ride
In a paddock near their place with Robbo by my side
But I know I must stay here to get a good education
For I want to go back home after my graduation
To see the many family, friends and familiar faces I have known
I can feel the souls of my ancestors calling me back home
They're calling me back, my ancestors in Mother Earth
I want to go back home, to the country of my birth. [1]

How do I ensure that I get an EOD contract in the Navy?

JTM3

I am sure that I will have high enough asvab scores but is it even possible to secure a rating? Also for physical training are you tested for the rating physical requirements in basic or is it before?

Any other information on basic training and EOD is appreciated.

I haven't told my family yet so any ideas on how to tell them without alarming them(well the least alarming).

Thank you all for your time and answer.
Hopefully this is helping many others too.

Answer
You can only ensure that you get a Navy EOD Contract by passing all of the tests with a flying color and do not need any waivers.

Prior to going to boot camp, you can get a Navy EOD Challenge Contract. The contract only guarantees you a spot in Navy EOD Pipeline; it does not guarantee that you will be a Navy EOD Technician (you will need to pass the pipeline). However, you can lose a contract at anytime, if you cannot conform to the standards of NSW/NSO such as failed PST's after you have a contract, get in trouble with the laws prior to going to boot camp, failed Bomb Suit Test or any other tests prior to getting into EOD Pipeline etc.

Before getting a contract, you will have meet the minimum eligibility (ASVAB, citizenship etc.), pass the initial Physical Screening Test - PST (there will be more later), Medical Screening, CSORT (Personality Test) etc.; keep in mind that the minimum PST Score will not get you the contract.

If you passed all of those things above, you will have to sign a Navy Contract in another rating first. Then after that, you will sign on EOD Contract (it is a modified-version of your original contract), which is a 6-year Active Duty. If you failed out of EOD Training, you will go back to whatever rating that you signed originally (and the length of the contract will be shorten to whatever you signed originally).

If you have an EOD Contract prior going to boot, you will be placed in the 800th Division, which is reserved for recruits with NSW/NSO Contract. You will get up earlier, be in the pool, and exercise more than the recruits in the other divisions.

BTW, I can't help you with the family thing; you are on your own on that one.

How to convince my parents into letting me go to summer camp?

best place for camping in dubai image

Shazz

I live in Dubai, I am 16 years old, and there is a National Geographic program which takes us to Alaska for 21 days. We will be learning about nature and i thought that would look really good in my personal statement to university next year but 1) The trip is expensive 2) The place is REALLY far away from where I live 3)My parents (mom esp) thinks about safety first. But I REALLY want to go any tips on to convince them? (I still havent told them anything about it yet I want to know how I should approach them first)

Answer
I don't know much about the program, but National Geographic is an extremely prestigious, respected, well-established organization. I really doubt they would put their name on any program that was potentially dangerous. I've done a number of outdoor programs and they all put safety of the participants first. I have no doubt that a National Geographic program would do the same. If this is your parents' main concern, ask the program director for information on their safety record and protocols. This will probably end up reassuring your parents, and also demonstrate how much you want to go.

I don't see why distance is much of an issue. If there is an emergency, it doesn't matter much if you're a couple hundred miles away or a couple thousand. When you're out of immediate reach, you're out of immediate reach. If this is a major issue for them, though, I think you need to give them the line about being a teenager and needing to become more independent, blah blah blah ...

I do wonder how much of an issue expense is. If that is your parents' main concern, then it might be legitimate and it might be harder to talk them into sending you if they feel it isn't financially prudent. The only thing that you can do is offer to contribute, maybe by getting a job if that's an option. You might also be able to enlist relatives to help pay for it; maybe you frame it as an advance birthday gift or something.

How many days are needed to see dubai?

hey...my sister is coming home for a short 2 week break and we have one weekend to go somewhere. one of my cousins is living there. my parents are doctors so we could manage a 3 day trip (including travel days) max. All the good travel people help please...

Answer
Dubai is a modern place, dont bother going to museum or zoo and stuff.

Spend a whole day in Desert Safari. It is amazing, a Land Cruiser will take to the desert up the hills on a thrilling ride then u can ride a camel or go motorbiking on desert (4wheel bikes) then u will sit on a camp, watch a belly dancer perform, u can also join her :D, and get henna on ur hands and etc and at the end enjoy a fancy dinner buffet.

Next day, go to Atlantis, recently opened, has water park, diving with dophins, aquarium... this is a bit expensive and it depens on ur budget.
So I recommend, for saving money, go to Wild Wadi water park, and u will love it. Next to wild wadi is Jumeirah Beach where U can see Burj-al-Arab, tallest hotel in the world, dont bother going inside(waste of money and time), cause there isnt anything fancy, just take some shots from outside. The hotel is 7 stared and good for staying but has nothing amazing on the lobby to see!! It is just a Lobby!!!

Last day, just go for shopping, I recommend, Mall of the Emirates (u can spend a whole day and also see the ski dubai) or Festival Center. If u shop from Top brands like Cartier, YSL and Saks Fifth so go to Burjman Center. If u dont want shopping, go to Madinat Jumeirah, it is a shopping center but has all the old antique stuff, nice cool place to chill. Many high-classed ppl hang out there and the cafes are a bit more expensive (but worth it ) u can then go for a nice dinner and do Shisha (must do in dubai hehe) and then go to a night club, cause dubai's nightlife is also famous.

But remember, u will be exhausted doing all this, so plan ur trip nicely. Good Luck

This coming summer I want to attend a good sleep away camp. I'm looking for one in a warm place like Florida. Is there a website where I can search through camps?

Places in Florida that offer group camping for 10-15 adults?

Any place in florida is ok.

What part of FL? Most FL State Parks allow you to reserve specific sites online so you can reserve two or three camp sites next to each other. Most also have bath houses as well as laundry mats.

It has to be in west virginia.Around the hundreds plz help us we need sites and everything before saturday like this saturday thank you.

Answer
Hi,
It might not be practical to find a cheap used camper trailer in only a few days, but you can meet your goal of going camping this weekend! I'd like to suggest that you consider purchasing a tent and some air mattresses for this weekend, this is a goal that you can meet fairly easily. If you don't already have sleeping bags, add those to your list. Even when you move up to your actual goal to purchase a cheap used camper trailer, the sleeping bags will come in handy. I've listed a few camper articles for you to look at, the first is regarding buying a camper at the eBay auction site, the second on the camper re-po market. It would be best for you and your family if you wrote out the features that you will need. For example, what is the tow capacity of the vehicle you will use to pull your camper trailer? You'll need to consider that the camper itself will only be a percentage (maybe 60%?) of the overall weight you'll tow, as most people load the trailer prior to pulling it. You'll also need to decide if you want your toilet an sink in the camper or you'll be roughing it, and how many beds you'll need. So I'd like to suggest that you go ahead and go camping this weekend, but take the time you''' need to properly select a unit.

Good luck, and have fun!

Good tent camping and fishing spots at Florida Keys?

Daniel Jus

I would like to go this friday with my family to Florida Keys, but i want to be at a good campsite close to a good fishing spot where i can go just walking.

Answer
I just returned Thursday from 5 weeks of fishing sw florida. I know, pretty cool right! Although i can't help with spots or campgrounds I can tell you to prepare for spring-like conditions. Big pompano, aggressive spanish mackeral, tons of sheepshead at high tide near structure, the ever present Ladyfish, lunker speckled trout, etc. all from shore.

Pay attention to the wind, you want a s or sw on south facing beaches, or a gentle east for east facing beaches but not enough east wind to compete with baitfish fighting the tides. Water clarity is very important, the clearer the better.

If fishing from shore, load up on 1/2 and 3/4oz metals like Kastmaster, the chinese versions on ebay are good enough but the real deal Kastmasters produce much better. Pink banana jigs with a small white bucktail teaser 12 inches up on a dropper loop for pompano will double you up, sand fleas for sheepshead around pilings and structure, be patient, only fish for sheepshead around high tide.

If your budget allows, the Keys guides know where the fish are holding, expect to limit out on speckled trout and mangrove snappers.

I'm envious, wish I was still there.

Born in Bo

I am at a loss as to where to take my family on vaction this summer.

WHAT IT SHOULD NOT BE: a beach vacation (been there/done that). Too rugged (wife/daughter wouldn't like)

WHAT IT SHOULD BE: physically beautiful (nature lovers); activities that adults and children can share; good food (wife)

Location is not an issue. Someplace in the Rockies would be great.

Answer
Here are some ideas:

North Dakota has some cool places. If you are into nature this is the place for you. I did a driving tour a few years ago and it was great. If you are interested in something like this contact the North Dakota Department of Tourism or the local chamber of commerce of certain cities. They will send you free maps and info on the tours. Self guided a lot of fun you get to see all the cool things about ND. Here are some sites:
www.ndtourism.com
www.visitgrandforks.com
www.2chambers.com

Washington has a lot of pretty places, and if you like nature there is nothing better than it! The Olympic Peninsula is just gorgeous! The mountains and forest are a site to see. There are some really sweet towns and some nice to stay in. Seattle is a great city, very nice place. There is a lot to do here, good place for couples. Great sites, good little caféâs and wonderful shopping. Young city with a lot of stuff to do nearby you can be in the rain forest in time. There are some really neat parks here and the mountains are awesome.

www.visitseattle.org
www.seattleattractions.com

If you like the mountains Denver and the surrounding areas are really nice, you can get a cabin in the mountains or stay are a nice resort. There is something for everyone here! Breckenridge also has some really nice places to stay. You might also like Aspen.
www.colorado.com
www.denver.org
Here are some other fun things to do in CO

Rifle Falls State Park (Northwest)
The obvious and spectacular highlight of this park is Rifle Falls â a waterfall split into three arms that plunges with chest-thumping force onto a Zen-like scene of rocks covered in hearty plants. Visitors can even take short hike to the top of the falls for a different view. The same trail also leads you past naturally formed limestone caves, with walls and ceilings covered in intricate and delicate limestone formations. Lush greenery and the twitter of songbirds compliment the scene and create the sense of sitting serenely in a large-garden. There are also seven walk-in and 12 drive-in camping sites that allow visitors to fall asleep to the rhythmic sound of this coursing waterfall.

Ridgway State Park (Southwest)
Scuba diving in Colorado? There is at Ridgway State Park. While not quite the waters of the Caribbean, it is a novel way to spend a Colorado vacation. There are 1,000 acres of water to explore, and whether you choose to do it with mask and tank or aboard a boat, youâre sure to get an eye full of the flooded valley floor. Ridgway is well known for being highly accessible to those with disabilities, and offers modern facilities and ample camping. This park also has a marina that rents or sells just about anything you need to have a good time. If youâd like a bit more luxury than a nylon tent, try mixing the experience of pure nature with that of semi-modern comforts in a yurt â a teepee-like structure with wood floors, a door and bunk beds. Visitors can rent yurts through the state park system.

The Springs Resort: Pagosa Springs
The deepest natural hot springs in the world are found in the homey Southwest Colorado town of Pagosa Springs. The mineral-laden water is cooled to varying degrees in the resortâs 18 distinct pools. In each, soakers slink, with eyelids closing from relaxation, into the mineral-rich waters. In the early morning, mist plays off the surface of the pools, engulfing the atmosphere in a thick shroud of vapors. Sunrises seen through this warming fog are broken down to their basic and beautiful colors, tinting the steam with orange and reds. When the mist clears, the San Juan River can be seen flowing along the length of the resort. On one bank, the hot springs relax guests, and on the other stand the Western facades of Pagosaâs downtown shops and restaurants. Staying the night at the lodge provides visitors with 24-hour access to the pools, allowing them a late-night dip in the eerily relaxing stillness. Plush robes and a private entrance to the springs are also perks of calling The Springs Resort home for a night or two.

Coloradoâs first residents towered over the landscape and their thunderous footsteps shook the earth. Dinosaurs have left their traces all across the state and not only are they abundant, but they are exceptionally accessible. Dinosaur National Monument in the northwest corner of the state is a bonanza of fossils and footprints, where museum-quality T. rex bones have been unearthed. The Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, west of Colorado Springs, holds the fossilized remains of a giant forest that inhabited the area roughly 35 million years ago. The brontosaurus, diplodocus, stegosaurus and allosaurus were all first found at Dinosaur Ridge, just outside of Denver. Take the kids on a self-guided tour of the area and discover dinosaur tracks that stretch so far and wide that the area has been lovingly called âDinosaur Freeway.â

Striking it Rich: Panning for Gold
Thereâs still gold in them there hills â the prospect of that alone excites the kids. But in Colorado, they also get the opportunity to take away some of Coloradoâs glittering riches while on mine tours. Let them swirl the water in their pan and look for the heavy golden sediment that made the fortunes of many a miner. While itâs doubtful youâll find enough gold in the river to pay the mortgage, youâll have fun filling your pockets with flecks of one of Coloradoâs most precious finds

I know you did not want a beach but, have you looked into Oregon? The drive down the Pacific Coast Highway should please everyone. There are tons of things to do and the wildlife and nature that cannot be beat! Go Kayaking, go to the Sea Lion caves, explore the beaches. Portland, Eugene, Florence and Bend are all wonderful! There are tons of things to do here and the wildlife could not be better! For other options check out Mt. Hood there is a great driving tour that has a ton of outdoor things this is some of the information I used to plan my trip:

Mt. Hood Scenic Byway
Oregon's newest Scenic Byway, where once volcanoes spewed and mammoth floods scoured deep gorges. Discover exquisite geologic wonders, waterfalls, temperate rain forests and wild rivers, where natural flora and fauna thrive. Explore our pastoral valleys with farm-fresh produce. See what Lewis & Clark saw. Experience that formidable last leg of the Oregon Trail, the Barlow Road. Enjoy yourself in our bountiful wonderland. After all, the pioneers did call it "paradise." The Mt. Hood Scenic Byway follows a breathtaking route around Mt. Hood offering panoramic views of stunning geologic diversity. Landscapes unfold from pastoral valleys and the splendid temperate rain forest into semi-arid uplands. Vistas created by catastrophic Ice Age events, our "sleeping" volcano, dazzling waterfalls, fertile farmlands, lush forests rife with wildlife, and gorgeous rivers will keep visitors entranced. History is embedded and alive: this is the same route traveled for thousands of years by local Native Americans, and more recently by pioneers traversing the "last leg" of the Oregon Trail in the mid-1800s. Accessible trails, signage, historical markers, monuments, and museums offer guidance and interpretation. Nowhere else can visitors experience the fantastic range of geology and nature entwined with human history, all within a few miles. The Byway is a traveler's delight.

I really like driving the Pacific coast highway because there is a lot to do! Nature is great here! Florence has the Sea Lion caves which are amazing! We're taking our daughter - who will be two and a half - to the States next summer. RV or Camping?

Skidoo

Which do you think is the better / safer / cheaper option?

We'll be staying with family in Oregon and N California for part of of the time, but can't decide how to organise the rest of the trip:

a) hire a big RV for the rest of the trip and call that home

b) hire a 4WD and a big tent and camp a few nights and stay at hotels/motels the rest of the time.

Pros and cons of the two?
My partner is more leaning towards getting an RV, but it seems like a big hassle to me. We'd have to organise exactly where we were going to be months in advance and then we're stuck with this big monster of a thing.

I'm more in favour of the 4WD and a big tent. As there's lots of family around we might not even end up camping at all...

Answer
Depending on where you wish to travel, I would think trying to get an inexpensive hotel on priceline.com or some other discount travel website would be the least expensive and easiest, as camping (any way you slice it,) is work. I have no idea how much it is to rent an RV, but I'm sure it is not cheap! Then there is gas, and camping fees, which have really increased in price (especially for an RV.)

If you are going to State or National Parks, I would camp, or some have Tent Cabins (like Yosemite,) that you can reserve, but I think reservations must be made 6 months in advance or more. You can go to their website to see more.

If you want to go to a big city like San Francisco, or something like that, I'd check on priceline for a hotel. My son did it recently, and he stayed in a 5 star luxury hotel for $99/night, and it included all hotel taxes and fees.... a GREAT deal!

Anyhow, I'd first figure out where you are going, then check out the options.

Q. Basically I'm going wild camping this year in the lake district for the first time, and I need to know the basics, is there any set rules like where I can stop? Thanks.
Thanks Lady Banker, I will be going in the summer, so consequently I can pitch up anywhere as long as it's suitable and not in a farmers field... if not, where would you normally camp for a night?

Answer
National Trust Sites

http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-vh/w-holidays/w-camp/w-northwest-lakedistrict_camping.htm

You won't be able to just camp anywhere - especially in the valley areas and you should certainly check with a farmer if you are about to use a field - he will get very angry indeed and you may find yourself in court for trespass.

However, up in the fells you can camp pretty much anywhere (if you know what you are doing). I suggest you should only contemplate this in the summer - it can be hell on those mountains in the winter- three people have died on Helvellyn already this year.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helvellyn

These mountains look so friendly in the summer or even early morning - but they can be like hell within a few hours. Be very careful- leave a message with someone if you are going camping - go to the tourist information centres for advice. I consider myself an experienced fell walker but I wouldn't contemplate camping on the fells. I have been lost on a mountain-only once, it was Crinkle Craggs and it got darker and darker and the visibility from the fog was zero. Got down at just after midnight, soaked and exhausted - and then had to get a taxi back to the starting point because we were in the wrong valley. It's years ago now but I've never forgotten it.

Where is a great place for camping somewhat close to Los Angeles?

Christian

My bros and I have been looking for a place to go camping near Los Angeles. All we have been able to find so far is campgrounds where you camp 20 or 30 yards from your car..... Not fun... We are looking for something a little more rugged and out there. Yes I know it's California and us being centered in LA doesn't help things but there's gotta be somethin out there! Not looking for the Bear Grills experience (unless of course you know a place :P) just somewhere forestry where we have to hike to get back to our cars :D Any help?

How to clean a camping tent that smells like mildew?

I haven't used my camping tent for quite a long time and it now smells like mildew. How to get rid of this bad awful smell?

Answer
First, you need get a tote and fill it with clean water then add pine-sol in it. After that, you can place the tent, rain fly, tent poles, tent bag, stakes and stake bag in to the water, and leave them soak in the pine-sol solution for an hour or so. One hour is enough for the camping tent to absorb the aroma of the pine-sol solution, and then you will get a fresh smelling tent.

After the tent has soaked in the pine-sol solution for one hour, now you should take it out of the access water and reassemble the tent in your yard. Use water hose to pray the tent off and you should pay particular attention to the fabric on the bottom. Be sure it is thoroughly rinsed.

The last step is to dry the camping tent. You should let the tent air dry both inside and outside. Itâs important to wait until the tent and all the contents are fully dry before you pack it back up. Otherwise, the mildew will return. If you have a large family tent or multi-room tent, then you should wait patiently. If the weather is not good and you cannot dry the tent outside, you should place the tent in your garage or even inside your home or basement to let it dry. One thing you need to keep in mind is never dry your camping tent in a dryer because this could reduce the lifetime of the tent.

Where is the best campground for TENT camping in Salida Colorado?

Shoshanna

Taking a family camping trip with a tent to Salida CO. We would like to do some fishing, hiking and possibly some horseback riding.

Answer
Hecla Junction is a great area to camp near Salida. It is off the main roads and set up against the Arkansas River. The fishing there is great and so is the scenery. It is managed by Colorado State Parks, so there is a fee to stay. The tent pads are large and level. There are also pit toilets which are nice when camping with kids and ladies. If your looking for a whitewater rafting adventure check out the Bighorn Sheep Canyon section of river just downstream of Salida by an hour. It is much more exciting and far less crowded than Browns. It is also great for kids! Have Fun!

Looking for a place to spend a couple of nights that is not overcrowded and can be enjoyed without spending a lot of cash.

Answer
"Withrow Springs State Park" (Tent sites start at $17) Nestled in shaded woods that reflect the seasonal beauty of the surrounding hardwood forest, the park's campground features 47 campsites [30 Class AAA (with water, up to 50 amp service, and sewer hookups) and 17 Class B (with water and 30 amp service)]. Each campsite can accommodate either an RV and/or a tent. The camping area also features a new, barrier-free bathhouse.
Withrow Springs State Park is located five miles north of Huntsville on Ark. 23; or 20 miles south of Eureka Springs on Ark. 23.

How to plan a camping vacation?

Jesse

Me and my family live in Ohio and we are planning on visiting maine but we are very poor so we are going to camp. We have a tent but we need to know how to plan for travel, staying their and food! Thanks!

Answer
Find your camping spots and reserve where you can. http://woodalls.com/ lists all that there is and you can make reservations through
http://www.reserveamerica.com/ or http://www.recreation.gov/

Planning now for summer is great since reservations go fast for the better, popular destinations also keep in mind that gas will rise to $4.00 a gallon by June, so watch that budget.

Check lists abound on the web for what to bring here is a good one,
http://www.rei.com/expertadvice/articles/family+camping+checklist.html

Food is easy bring simple foods that all like and stop for a pizza on the road nobody likes to hassle with cooking right when you get to your campsite with dinner made you can focus on dessert and making smores. Here are some menu planning suggestions,

What is the best way to put a atv/dune buggy adventure together?

Im looking to put together a dune buggy/atv/sand rail adventure in Oregon late October and am curious what would be the best way to go about it. Being from Texas, not quite sure where to start. I am wanting more of an adrenaline rush rather than a family enviroment. New to the sport, so I would like a group of people, but not the typical tourist trap, more gritty :) if camping can be integrated, even better! Thanks!

Answer
Heya Sara! Use to live in Oregon for about 20 years and live in Nevada now. I do this stuff all the time. If I may, let me give you some thoughts. Your question has a few things to take into consideration. It sounds like you are new to the Oregon area and that you presently don't have a lot of friends into the sport as yet. Being as you are from Texas, let me tell you about the weather out here in October. It could be beautiful sunny days, non-stop rain, or snow/wind/freezing cold. October may not be the best time to do this. The West does not have nearly the relatively stable climate of Texas. I'm not saying don't do it.....I do! =) Just be aware, that the weather we have now, won't likely be the same in October. You will have to pack and plan accordingly....

The first place to start, assuming you don't have a circle of friends into this stuff is to find a a club that is into this stuff. If in fact you do, I will expand on that later. There are numerous ATV, off-road and sandrail/dunebuggy clubs that organize events that you are looking to participate in. Do a Google search for your area. You might find a club in Madras or Pendleton that has your interests, but maybe not one in Portland, just as examples.

Start off looking for a club. If you do in fact have friends that are into this, where you can put a group together, I would look anywhere East of the Cascades and South of I-84 to put a trip plan together. Most of the areas opposite of these boundaries are pretty tough to make a "gritty", non-family, non-tourist trap adventure together due to restrictions, private property, etc. If you go to the boundaries I suggest you will find more open space, less restrictions and many opportunities for unrestricted ATV activities and camping. If you are planning a trip such as this, get some BLM maps and check trail usage regulations, camping regulations, etc. If you have any questions, contact the field office for whatever area, explain what you are trying to do, and verify it is okay to do that. Oregon, Washington and California change their regulations not only regularly, but seasonally.

Living in Nevada, and it not being that far from any point in Oregon, I would consider a trip down here as well. Lots of wide open space, liberal regulations on ATV use and you can pretty much camp wherever you want as long as not on private property.

Feel free to drop me a line with more specifics if you would like more info or ideas. Have fun, be safe and hope I helped.

where to go RV camping this week in South East Texas?

Alex Hiep

Looking for suggestion from anyone who may have done this before. I am looking to take my family on our first RV camping in the winter. I have teens and youngsters. Are there any place to RV this week in the Texas: Houston, Austin, San Antonio that have nice scenic and activities like horse back riding or ATV rental? Hunting would be nice too.

Answer
That area has many good spots. any State park is excellent. Garner State Park is very nice but call first as I am not sure they are open during winter. that place is usually hoping during the summer. any place near San antonio and you can drive to the city and visit the Alamo and hang around downtown for a day. Very nice city. Investigate Lake Travis that is a very nice lake, I am sure somewhere on it is RV camping.
