why did italians settle in melbourne?

Kaylah

Why did the italian migrants choice to settle themselfs mostly in melbourne?

Answer
Why not ? Initially there were put into immigration camps but after working for a set time, they were free to go where they wanted. Italians are from one side of Australia to the other. Desert to mountains. Maybe they headed for Melbourne directly after WWII as it was the furtherest place from the violence they could find

Besides St Kilda where in melbourne, australia are the $25pw homes for rent?

Daniel Sha

I'm currently deciding about where to move.

Answer
LOL ... a non-powered camping site would cost you more!

As for cheap places to rent in Melbourne ... look at areas outside Melbourne (ie at least 40 minutes from CBD) ... possibly Frankston, Dandenong, Lilydale, Windham Vale/Werribee

Where to go for Grad Camping Trip on Vancouver Island, BC?

Christina

im planning a grad camping trip for my high school grad class on Vancouver Island, BC... possibly around Parksville, Tofino, or the Gulf Islands....but I don't know where to go. We would want a place that isn't particularly family-oriented, because we're young and will inevitably make some noise. A place with like a group campsite would be best. we don't need any special amenities, just a campfire, some bathrooms, and showers. Any ideas? anything will help!!

Answer
You should look into the group camping areas in Strathcona Provincial Park.

Anyone got a full camping list?

andybfirth

Hi, Me and my family are just going to start camping this summer, and need a full list of things we will need to take. It may sound a little thick but we don`t want to get somewhere and find we dont have all the gear. Any help or info would be of great help.

Thanks Andy

Answer
Depend on where your camping. MT I wouldn't camp with out a S&W Model 500, food, rattlesnake bite kit, cellphone, sleeping bag, water, bugspray, duct tape, a leatherman utility tool, silverware (well plastic at least) a jackknife or a hunting knife, warm clothing for sleeping (layering is always prefered) boots, first aid kit, flashlight, a grill or camping stove, fire suppression kit (whether just a fire extingusher or sand), horseshoes (Never know when you will have time for a pickup game) frying pan, fishing liceance, fishing pole, bait, tent, raincoat, radio with batteries so you can keep track of weather

Does anyone have any information on family camping areas in southern california

April M

I'm looking for family friendly places to camp in southern california or central california, or not too expensive cabin rentals. Swimming, fishing and hiking would have to be included as well.

Answer
There is a book called California Camping by Tom Stienstra. It is the camping bible you might say. Anyways, it list all campgrounds in California including RV places, tent places, and even back packing places. He tells what each campground has, where it is, and rates the quality too. Bes book ever. I have the book, but I am too lazy to start looking up campgrounds in Southern California as they have so many. Another place to look is Reserve america on line.

Camp counseling places?

Q. Okay, I am twelve, but will be thirteen in summer, and during the summer I want to counsel at a little kids camp somewhere in Texas. Does anyone know of anygood places or websites?

Answer
Try Summercamps.com website. You can browse camps by state or by the type of camp they are. There is also a section to search for summer camp jobs. I was a counselor when I was 14 or 15 and really enjoyed it.

I hope this helps you!!

Where is a good place to camp in oregon ?

portland37

I want it to be somewhere near water and where adults are okay to drink. Any suggestion is a good one. Thank you

Answer
Cape Lookout, down by the beach there is a campground, you'll hit it if you take hwy 6 out of portland, down to tillamook (watch your speed), go out 3rd street toward netarts (this turns into Hwy 131), turn left when you see the sign for Cape Lookout, stay on that bumpy road and the campground is on your right (toward to water) but BEFORE you go up over the top of the Cape. Great great great camping but RESERVE YOUR SPOT NOW. I MEAN RIGHT NOW LIKE TOMORROW MORNING. That place is packed all summer. I'd shoot for sometime between August 10th and September 30th. That's your best bet. And, the best campground I've been to in all of Oregon. Also, if you head back toward Netarts on the same road for dinner some night, there's a nice Italian place on your left (can't miss it), and if you turn left onto the road that stays by the bay, you'll come to The Schooner (get the PIZZA). Ignore the fish, Ignore the steak, get the pizza, trust me. There's also another more adult type bar and grill just up the hill from the schooner, take a right and it's one block up (Michko's). That used to be my neighborhood bar and it's a close drive from your campsite if you wanted to get some bar time in one night before heading back to the campground for the campfire. They usually have a decent band in there on the weekends, and the bartenders are great, except for the crotchety old lady, but she never works weekends. They've got a pretty good menu too (cheaper then the Schooner and much more casual). Get there before nine for the full menu (get the steak sandwich), or typical bar food after nine. Large outdoor deck out back, very large bar actually, plenty of quiet nooks, very clean private bathrooms. That's my recommendation for camping. Head into Tillamook for any needed supplies from the grocery store. Take the same road back into town that you took on your way out and you'll run right into Safeway, can't miss it. The hospital is right there too should something go "awry". I recommend a hike on Cape lookout during the day, and take the UPPER TRAIL, not the one that goes down to the beach. You'll have plenty of beach time at the campground.

What's your favorite camping place in or close to oregon?

Q. where is your favorite place to go camping in oregon? What makes it so great for you? Is there tent camping, rvs, cabins? Are dogs welcome?

Answer
Nehalem Bay State Park, on the Oregon coast has great camping. You can pitch a tent, or bring an RV. Dogs are allowed, and there are nice bathrooms/showers. It's close to Manzanita, and Cannon Beach, which are nice towns.

Camping in Jasper National Park?

Mark V

I'm taking a trip to Jasper National Park in Alberta. Which campground in the park would you recommend? Please only make a recommendation if you have camped there. I am looking for a site with a decent amount of privacy.

Answer
I personally prefer Waipiti campground, it's basically across the street from Whistlers campground........but Waipiti just seems nicer to me.....I've always camped there since I was very young with my parents. There is some great camping towards mount edith cavel as well, take the scenic route alond I think 93a and there is a great campground there, more rustic with wildlife and bears, but it's beautiful there. Flush toilets, but no showers I don't think!

Tent camping places near Vancouver, WA?

howcrazy

We are going camping leaving late tonight and getting back late Wednesday night. We have two kids. We will be tent camping...want to have a campfire etc. and large enough camo sites for a larger tent. Where are some good places around Vancouver, WA? Also, we love th beach if you know of one within 2.5 hours of Vancouver, WA that lets you camp on the beach! Thanks!

Answer
It's probably too late to answer this, but...

There is TONS of camping around Vancouver. Lots of National Forests, Mt. Rainier NP, and a lot of Washington State Parks on the coast and around Vancouver.

Check the links below.

Where can I go back-country camping with my boyfriend for a night near Vancouver, BC?

decrivi

We want to go somewhere that we can just have a good time that's just in the back country. It's not a real legit thing. Just want to build a fire and spend some alone time together; we'll likely just sleep in the car.

Any suggestions?
Off course we would be careful with our campfire and would not ever think to leave it active whilst asleep, whether in a car or a tent!!

Answer
"Hi"......Please don't light fires in any other place but a regular supervised campground.........and sleeping in your car while comfortable doesn't really give you control of what the fire is doing.

I love my "big, green, beautiful, giganhumoungous back yard" to play in and request that it is treated with respect.

Just my gentle opinion.....(Michael C...)

***********************************************************

Edit...glad to hear........Ok a suggestion....go to Porteau Cove (Yahoo it) it's on the way to Squamish and 30 mins from Vancouver and is excellent hardcore camping on the beach....good parking near it ( 300 feet ) and safe. It's kayak heaven just as an aside...*lol* I'd stay offroad ( unpaved) though if I were you if in just a car...it would be folly.l

Here's one of many links.....

I am new to camping and need a place in WI that I can just hike in and camp where ever.?

fire415248

I am fairly new to camping, I have been out a few times. I am a hiker, kayaker and general lover of all things outdoors. i am looking for a place in Wisconsin to either hike or kayak and then be able to set up a small camp wherever I feel like. Not a public type campground with outlets and showers.

Please any info would be very appreciated.

Answer
Hi,

In most of Wisconsin, the southern 2/3 anyway, the only camping areas are state parks or private campgrounds - both of which designate where you can camp, but they aren't all over-crowded. And even in Kettle Moraine North - they have shelters for you to stay in, and you need to have a permit, etc. I don't believe they allow dispersed camping in that park either.

When you get into northern Wisconsin, you can hit the Nicolet National Forest, and there are plenty of remote / rustic sites that will leave you with few if any neighbors. Check with the local rangers about dispersed camping here, as I think there are only loose guidelines in site selection there.

The ultimate trip, of course, would be up in the Apostle Islands. There you could kayak and hike to your heart's content, hike and camp, and howl with the wolf pack!

You can canoe / kayak camp on the lower 100 miles of the Wisconsin River; from Sauk City on down, you can camp on any sandbar you come across - and there are some excellent spots. No permits are required, the only rules the DNR worry about is to make sure you don't bring glass with you on the river.

And the St. Croix river has canoe camping; I haven't had the good fortune to paddle it, but I believe the campsites are established sites, with picnic tables and fire rings. (no vehicle access though, from what I gather).

Buckhorn State Park on Castle Rock lake is a great option too. They have numerous hike-to sites. Not exactly backpacking on a trail, but you hike in up to a mile to get to your campsite. They have pit toilets nearby, but no showers and RV generators to deal with. The park is on Castle Rock Lake, and all kinds of boats are able to access some of their shoreline campsites. There are numerous bars / restaurants nearby, so you may hear bands / noise from across the lake when you're at a shoreline site. You can kayak in however, and hike in the park.

Have fun!

Need help finding a family tent.?

bls1177

My family and I are going to the Smokey Mountain National park at the end of August and need a new tent. We have been looking around at tents and need some advice. We are and plan in the future to do car camping so weight is not the biggest concern but do not want a giant that it takes two to carry. We have been looking at the REI Base camp 6 and it seems great but it is expensive at $400 + footprint = $450. But if that is a great tent and a value when all things are considered then so be it. If any one has any thoughts I would love to hear them. I have been camping many times but this is my wife and 3 year old daughters second time. I think I want a 3 season with medal poles for strength and a vestibule for cooking if the weather is bad. Thanks for the help in advance

Answer
You might look at some Eureka tents. In my opinion they have the best quality for the money and they also have the largest selection.
http://www.eurekatent.com/
Their Canadian website has some nice tents that aren't listed on their American site.
Once you find a make and model you like Bizrate is a good place to shop for the best price.
http://www.bizrate.com/
I picked up a $630 Eureka Tunnel Vision for $325 using Bizrate and that included free shipping and no taxes.

Can anyone recommend a really good tent that fits 4 ppl hold us against wind & rain fits a queen size air bed?

Q. be nice if it a 6 foot tall person could stand comfortably in it as well

Answer
I assume you're going car camping, because it would be tough to carry a queen air mattress, even a thin one, on a backpacking trip. You'll also probably need more space than a normal 4-person tent to fit the mattress plus two more people. So I'd go with a family/recreational style 4-5 person tent with a full fly for rain/wind protection.

The Big Agnes Big House 6 would seem to satisfy all your criteria with room for the mattress, stand-up height and good rain/wind protection. But it's pricey at about $350 (+ $100 if you want the huge vestibule option). A more affordable model is the Eureka Grand Manan 9, with a small vestibule, only $214 on Amazon.com (free S&H).

There are some less expensive tents but they don't have the height or rain protection you prefer. There are also more expensive tents if you want additional room, such as the Eurkea Pine Lodge at about $500. I haven't used a Big Agnes tent but I do have two Eureka's: a well-used 15 year-old Backcountry-2 and a new Alpenlite XT. The Backcountry-2 is the favorite tent for both of my sons and me, its been used over 300 days total, including several major storms, and has never let us down. But the Backcountry-2 is a small 2-person tent designed for backpacking, not what you had in mind, but indicative of the quality of Eureka tents in general.

Whatever tent you get you will probably need to seal the seams before your first use (I do this even with factory-sealed seams). This will also give you the opportunity to practice setting-up and taking-down the tent before your first trip. You will also need to get a ground cloth that's a few inches shorter on each side than the floor of the tent to help protect from damage and moisture -- you can buy a "footprint" specifically for your tent or just trip a piece of plastic drop cloth to size. If bad weather is a concern you can bring a few tarps to string between trees for use as a wind breaks and additional rain protection, or to make a protected dining area (never eat in your tent).

Is camping better at Angeles Forest or Joshua tree?

Lunapaws

i'm going on a 7 day vision quest of water only fasting and meditation in the (semi) wilderness.
I won't be moving around much, and would like a measure of isolation but have a camp somewhat close for safety.
Angeles Forest is the closest and my original plan, but a friend recommended Joshua tree. seems like cool geography, but also more for climbing (next trip!) than fasting. Any thoughts?

Answer
Joshua tree is known for it's ability to cause an inner peace with the solitude of the desert, and now is the best time to go there. Indian cove is one of the more popular camping sites and it is possible to reserve a site there. In the park at Hidden valley campground, a first come first served campground, there are a few trails leading out from there to what many believe are old native religious sites and many have said to have had interesting experiences there. Go climbing at least some bouldering putting yourself at one with your surroundings opens the mind to what God may want you to hear. In a Christian perspective Christ wandered in the desert for forty days and Joshua Tree is as close to the biblical desert we have around here.

Does anyone know any good camp sites in So. cal?

blah blah

i'm thinking of going camping this weekened. I've been to this areas around san bernandino like 2 months ago. And it sucked asss! looked really burnt out! hahaha So yeah!!
When I used to live in PA. There;s was a lot of nices places i used to go to . I'm in CA now and I rememebr going somewhere a few years ago here. I think it was joshua tree, sequoia not sure, something like that I forget. But it was nice.
Any good camp sites? With a place to fish? HELP!!!
No where to far. I'm not going to Drive more than 2 hours...i'm in like the LA, OC area.
I know theyre are plenty of them on the coast. Thanks!

WHAT I WAS MORE LOOKING FOR IS A SPOT WHERE YOU HAVE CAMPED BEFORE AND THAT YOU WOULD RECOMMEND.

Answer
It's too late in the year unless you gain some serious altitude - 8,000 feet or more - or hit the beach. Regular camp sites are hot and dusty from now until November. If it was me, I like solitude and since it's already hot I'd just go out to the desert and make my own camp site. Actually, since it is me, I do that all the time! A 4x4 gives you a lot more choices too. You'll have to sit out in the sun for about four hours though until you really believe you're fishing. But those fish stories are incredible!

Oh, I thought of one for you. Go to either Lytle Creek or Whitewater. Lytle Creek is just west/south of the 15/215 jct. and Whitewater is just this side of Palm Springs off the 10. Both have water in them for you to soak in since it's so stinking hot. Take a folding patio chair and find a pool to sit partially submerged and it's actually a great way to spend the day with a book or iPod. Both waters have been known to have fish in spots and seasonally. I wouldn't count on catching anything there though. Whitewater used to have a fish hatchery a ways up the canyon, and I bet it's still there. Who knows, you might get lucky. My choice would be Whitewater. I've spent more than a few hot days soaking in that water. Send me a message and I'll send you a couple of photos of my favorite 'pool' there.

How to propose in Hong Kong?

glacierfro

I'm planning to prospose to my long time girlfriend who lives in hong kong. I'm not from there so I don't have a clue where it would be nice to propose. Also can you guys suggest how I can propose to her? I really want to make it special. So far I'm planning to surprise her by going there without her knowledge but I have no idea where to go from there. Do I bring flowers? Do I take her out to dinner? Or how bout a walk on the beach? The possibilities are endless. I don't wanna mess this up. ^_^

Answer
i think u should camp with her.

where?
near beach or even on the beach, cuz it has a very very good view

how?
1) declarate the camp site,buy a gift & a flower , hid them
2) take her to the camp site (suppose everything is okay, namely, tent)
3) having a candle dinner for her,all food must be cook in frount of her (e.g. heart shape beef + red wine or cook wut u kno how to cook)suggest u to have cooking lessons!if the site is on the beach! ensure no sand go into the food!
4) now, she must b look very very very happy
5) give the the gift & flower , at the same time say "i Love u" or some sweet words

Justin bieber concert help !?

Q. okay so tomorrow on november 23rd justin bieber is going to be at Rockefeller center so these are my questions
1 )what time is he going to be there
2 )what time are we suppose to be there
3 )do we need tickets to get in
4 )how long is he going to be there
5 ) is he going to preform in or out for free or what ?
any answer is helpful?

Answer
What time is Justin Bieber going to go to be at 'The Today Show'? Well Justin Bieber gets up kinda early and since he has to get ready for the concert and 'The Today Show' starts at 8:00 AM on live television I'm gonna guess and say he will be there sometime around 6:00 AM or 7:00 AM either or.

What time are the fans supposed to be there? There isn't a specific time you have to be there but if you want to see the entire performance and have great seats its good to get there early. This family of 4 has been standing out there 3 days before Justin Bieber is supposed to stay there. The Today Show has been talking about them since the day they got there. I know some girl that met Justin Bieber outside of 'The Today Show' November 4, 2011 and she waited since 2:00 AM in the morning until Justin Bieber's interview started which was at 8:00 AM. If you show up at 4:00 AM I'm sure you would still be very far away, there most likely will be people camping out (there were fans that were camping out to meet Justin Bieber in Macy's for Justin's fragrance line) so you should camp out if you really want to see Justin Bieber up close and if you get tired or you want to sit down you could always go back to the tent. There are fans that would do anything to see Justin whether their meeting him or their just seeing him live. Justin Bieber is extremely popular and he seems to be getting more and more popular everyday so it most likely will be very crowded

Do we need tickets to get in? No its free just like how whenever the fans in New York City know that Justin Bieber is gonna do an interview with 'The Today Show' and sign autographs they show up extremely early and get there for free because they know since its New York City there will be many people that will show up but if you want to make sure just in case you should call 'The Today Show'.

How long is Justin Bieber going to be there? Its probably going to be like any regular concert of his when he performs and sings his whole album. At Justin Bieber concerts they usually start at 7:00 PM here in America but he doesn't come out until 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM because of the opening acts and the concert ends at 10:00 PM. I don't think that Justin Bieber is going to have opening acts while performing outside of 'The Today Show' but I do think that since he does perform 1-2 hours singing his whole album I think that's the way it will be on 'The Today Show'. I don't think that their going to record Justin Bieber singing all of his songs on T.V at The 'Today Show' though.

Is Justin Bieber going to perform indoors or outdoors? Justin Bieber will be performing outside. If there is bad weather there will be a tent so that he or his fans don't get really wet. There wouldn't be enough room for Justin Bieber to perform inside for his fans and the inside would cover the whole inside of 'The Today Show' when they can't do that because they have to do news there and other stuff lol.

Be prepared for rain and for it to be really windy. Make sure to wear warm clothing. Good luck :)

Camping in the USA?

Q. I would love to go camping in the USA, not sure where to go though. My only concern are there many bears or wolves about, as I know you have them in the USA. I presume American citizens would have a rifle of some sort for protection, I am a Brit so would I be able to have a rifle for protection just for the duration of my stay?. Nothing fancy just an M16 or something similar.
Yeah good advice, cheers cisco kid.
No I am not anti American just anti bear and wolf and I have never fired a gun.

Answer
Dude, you have been watching wayyyy toooo much TV and have some weird notions on what America really is!!!!!!!!

first,
BEARs are not a consideration unless you go way up north (like Alaska or Canada).. the grizzlies are the only species of bear to attack UNPROVOKED.... don't worry about it.. if you happen to be in a very isolated area (which will take a few days of backpacking with no one around) be smart and use bear bags & the proper precautions to avoid attracting bears.. it's a thing called self-education (http://www.outdoors.org/recreation/hiking/hiking-bears.cfm)..
and if you are attacked, it's your own damn fault for leaving a pack of oreos out....

second..
wolves will not attack you unless you're alone, hiking thru yellowstone in the dead of winter when they haven't had a meal in a month.... in reality, you'd be a real lucky guy to even see a wild wolf in it's natural habitat... let alone be bothered by one.. you'd be one of the very few to witness such a beautiful creature.. but my guess is that you won't be going to such a place since our country is a bit larger than your own.. there's much land to travel here..

as far as the guns go.. the only reason you would need one is for your own stupidity & likley hood that you don't understand western america's customs & would need protection from another human being, not a wild, rabid animal...

as far as your research goes... remember this.. in the US there are TONS of people living on both coasts... travel further inland, and you'll start seeing less people.. the real wilderness areas for adventure are in the northern rockies, or the desert southwest... both are harsh environments & weed out the sissys..
happy hunting

Does anyone know any camping sites in New York that are open in january?

Parvati

Me and four friends wanna go camping on the Martin Luther King weekend. It can't be an adult only camp because we're all 14 or 15...
And if you know any bus lines that can take you to there that'd be helpful too.

Thanks guys :)

Answer
Hogencamp Mountain in Harriman/Bear Mountain State Park. There are greyhound bus lines once a day to the Bear Mountain Inn from (I believe, but it may be Penn Station) Grand Central in NYC and From Albany, NY. From there I would suggest getting a local cab company to take you to the parking lot at Lake Kanawaukee. There is a lean-to shelter and fire pit on the mountain top above Kanawaukee Circle, but when I was your age and camping there with buddies in the spring, the Park Rangers were always harassing us about the campfire. We hiked west on Hwy 106 for a mile and a half (past Little Long Pond). Right at the small parking area for hikers on the right, there's a blazed trail that leads straight to the top of Hogencamp Mountain, where there is plentiful deadfalls for firewood, a beautiful lean-to shelter, a good firepit and incredible views from the NYC skyline all the way to the Catskills. We were there for a week and never saw another soul (but we did see and smell a bear). Make sure if you go there to tell your parents exactly where you plan to be, and bring a cell phone. You'll have reception at the top of the mountains. Also, and this is most important, buy a trail map at the Bear Mountain Inn gift shop.

below is a link to the terrain map of the mountain.

How high can primitive camp sites get in Hawaii?

Q. I don't refer to cost. I'm interested in altitude.
A recent emergency camp involved a snow
cave on the big island.
No snow cave in Hawaii?! I'm soooo crushed.
I was considering packing up a 7/11 Slurpee.

Answer
Not higher than 4,207 meters on Mauna Kea. Of course, camping there would be a violation of state regulations.

Camping

Four Hawaiâi Parks allow camping.

Kalopa State Recreation Area offers tent camping in addition to cabin lodging.

Manuka State Wayside offers open shelter camping.

Kiholo State Park Reserve provides weekends-only camping along the stark, lava-covered Kona coastline.

Interestingly, a federal wildlife reserve exists to protect threatened and endangered species.

In 1997, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service purchased approximately 5,300 acres of land to create the Kona Forest Unit of Hakalau Forest NWR. The Kona Forest Unit includes lands within the Hoâokena and Kalahiki land divisions on the western slopes of Mauna Loa, at elevations between 2,000 and 6,000 feet. Kona Forest Unit is located approximately 23 miles south of Kailua-Kona.

At the lower elevations - 2,000 to 3,600 feet - the forest is predominately âÅhiâa trees with an understory of nonnative trees and shrubs, such as christmasberry, clidemia, an strawberry guava. Above 3,600 feet, the invasive trees and shrubs drop out and the forest is dominated by âÅhiâa and koa trees with an understory of ferns and native flora. A remnant of dry âÅhiâa forest is found at the highest elevations and includes sandalwood and mÄmane.

The primary purpose for establishing the Kona Forest Unit is to protect, conserve, and manage this native forest for threatened or endangered species. Of particular concern was the âalalÄ (Corvus hawaiiensis), whose wild population, known only from the west side of the Big Island, gradually declined to only a single pair in 2002. After 1993, the wild population of âalalÄ was observed intensively, as the number of birds gradually declined to a single pair in 2002, and were not seen after June of that year. As of 2008, approximately 50 âalalÄ are in captivity at the Keauhou and Maui Bird Conservation Centers on Hawaiâi and Maui islands, respectively. Once the Kona Forest Unit is fenced, feral ungulates removed, and vegetation and habitat restored, progeny from these captive birds may be released into the Kona Forest Unit.

The rescue of the stranded hiker, however, was within a national park under the jurisdiction of the United States Department of Interior on Mauna Loa, 13,677 feet.

New York resident Alex Sverdlov, 36, began the grueling 18-mile trek from the top of Mauna Loa Road at 6,662 feet towards the summit of Mauna Loa. He reached the 13,677-foot summit on Tuesday, after dropping off his heavy gear at a lower elevation.

The snowstorm struck on his late-afternoon descent, creating a blinding white-out. Night fell, and after a few futile attempts to locate his pack, Sverdlov decided to hunker down in the snow until daylight. His only protection was the clothes he had on, and a bottle of frozen water.

Where is a good place to go camping in central NJ area?

Q. I have a lot of experience camping, I just want to know a good place that is deep in the woods to get away from everything. Somewhere peaceful. Not some cheesy scout campsite or park.

Answer
That's very difficult to find in NJ, particularly in central NJ.

In western/northern NJ you have 72 miles the Appalachian Trail. Camping is only permitted in the provided shelters (or nearby/within view, if the shelter is full), and only for one night per location.

There are some nice and relatively separated family campsites in Stokes State Forest, also in northern NJ.

In southern NJ, the Pine Barrens offers some nice campsites off the beaten trail. Many of these are sparsely populated in the Fall. There are even two sites, Mullica and Lower Forge, that are hike-in or canoe-in only.

If you want more remote/secluded camping you'll need to travel to upstate NY or western PA.

Camping in NJ HELP????

I want to camp in NJ. TENT! No RV or something.

Drive there... plan to camp out in tents with friends and bike or hopefully bike or drive to the shore/beach during the day.

Would prefer somewhere VERY CLOSE to Rumson... if n/a then whatever the best options are!

I know nothing about NJ & traveling from the midwest to get the nature/wildernessey aspect but the beach aspect too and would like to do an event over a long weekend.. i'm not sure what.

Any ideas?

Thanks... I'll do it this spring or summer.

Answer
I don't know of any campground in or near Rumson and I'm glad you didn't say you wanted to camp on the beach because in Jersey camping on any beach is out.
There are some campgrounds in south Jersey NEAR the beach from these you can take the car with the bike inside and bike to Mays landing, and just pedal around town which has a main street closed to cars. It's a nice quaint place with a great beach.
Try... Seaside Campground, Big Timber lake CG, Oceanview CG..they all have web sites for you to look at.
Make your reservations ASAP.a lot of places are already booked
If you check out Cape May or these campgrounds it will give a list of things going on

Spring Break Camping East Coast?

Woogie

My buddys I are trying to find a place to go camping for spring break. Last year we went to Jekyll Island had fun but want a place with more bars/people. We would like to so swimming so a warm body of water would be nice (does not have to be ocean). Also a beach would be nice. We are all in college so would like to stay away from the family type of camping. If anyone has a great place please let me know!

*We live in Dayton, Ohio and would not like to drive the whole trip

Answer
Myrtle Beach is nice if you want lots of people and partying. Watauga Lake, Boone, Blowing Rock are if you want less people, more relaxing, and still plenty of places to drink beer. And much closer drive.

road trip to canada - banff, what all should I bring?

newchasm

my route im doing with my college buddies will be like this. tn to chicago to minnapolis to rapid city to glacier then to canada (banff in canadian rockies), then back down to salt lake, denver, wichita, then home.

I have a list of my own, im mainly going to be camping. However I wanted the minds of a bunch of people to list off what they would bring then itd help me figure out if im missing anything that would be helpful.

I'll be in a 08 corrolla so whatever ya think can fit in a sudan with 3 people, meaning no canoes on it X-P (and yep im bringing a tent.)

Best answer will be based upon what i may think be the overall best list for this 2 week road trip or whoever makes me add the most things to the current list I have. disregard money.

please throw your opinions, and I wish I could pick more than one best answer for this but you all would be helping out a lot by doing this. a million minds (on yahoo) think better than just 3 of us that are going.

-thanks

BRING A PAPER MAP your gizmo's do not always work in the mountains from Salt lake to Banff. You can reserve camp-sites ahead both in Canada and the US. When there is not HIGH FIRE DANGER depends on local weather, you are usually permitted a camping and or a cooking fire bring fire starting material matches/lighter a few things to cook with over the fire or wrapped in Aluminium foil shiny side out beside the fire on the hot coals. Clothes hanger wire works great for dogs and marshmallows.Bring sturdy walking/hiking boots.(low rise is fine) Temperature varies greatly during the day. Bring clothing that you can layer.Do not bring too much there are laundromats in most places so you can refresh. JOIN AAA club in your area then get their maps and travel guides. Can get city maps, state maps, guidebooks for accommodation and sightseeing points of interest at NO CHARGE with membership. This also helps if you have car trouble on your journey in Canada and the US..Check your phone plan for ROAMING charges you may want to change plans for when you are out west so you do not get extra fees for Canada.Have minimal food when crossing border in either direction. Tinned and packaged items usually O K fresh uncooked fruits, veggies and meats have various restrictions going in both directions over border. Car insurance for Canada your passports.Various routes North from glacier to Banff (Chief Mountain Border Crossing only open for a few months roads closed by SNOW)
others are open year round.

Pack a cooler along and keep it stocked with beverages and snacks for travelling
Car supplies a few quarts of motor oil (can buy as you go) windshield washer fluid A scrubber type sponge to clean bugs off the windows. Have your car serviced before you go tires filters wipers oil change and so on.Practise changing a tire to make sure you know you have and can use to required tools.
DUCT tape get item for repairs to many things while camping.
Heavy string or cord to hang clothes from when you have bad weather days.and need to dry it out.
Bring a spirit of adventure and that should complete the list.

Holiday in America. just a few questions?

Hello,
next year im going on a holiday to america with my family. i have never been over seas and im very excited. i really want to go to new york but mum says we are sticking to the other side of the US. so we are going to places like Las Vegas, LA, San Francisco, Hollywood, Yosemite National Park.
we will go to places like the grand canyon, the big red bridge in san francisco, universal studios, the place in hollywood where the stars are in the floor, disneyland. and places like that.
is there anything you suggest that we do in thoes areas. oh and we plan on going for 2-3 weeks and the start of June 2011.
and also id like to get something from everywhere, for example a post card or keyring from all the places i go. is there anything you suggest that i get as a way to remember where i was.

Answer
Congratulations on your trip! Being a born and bred California girl, I think your mum made a good choice about where to visit. That being said, the previous answer about our weather couldn't be more incorrect. There are plenty of places in California that are cold, wet & rainy (San Francisco, for example, is almost always cold!).

My main suggestion is this: try to find time in each place you go to experience "every day" life; don't stick just to tourist destinations. This is what makes someone a traveller rather than a tourist. For example, in Los Angeles, go to the Farmer's Market downtown or the one in Santa Monica. In San Francisco, wander around Chinatown, see the Ferry Building, and take a boat ride across the bay to Marin County (the Golden Gate Bridge connects SF with Marin County). This will give you a taste of what it's like to live here.

How about this as an idea for a souvenier: most tourist shops sell sterling silver charms to put on charm bracelets. They are usually not more than $15 each, and you can collect one from each area you visit. When you get home, you can ask for a silver charm bracelet for your birthday or other holiday, and have all the charms placed on it by a jeweler. This way, you have a lovely piece of jewelry that you can continue to add to throughout your entire life, and it will be more meaningful than a postcard or a cheap plastic key ring.

Here are my specific recommendations:

Do try to have at least two days at the Disney Resorts, or you will be missing a lot. For advice on all things Disney, go to www.mouseplanet.com

You may want to visit Napa County (wine country north of San Francisco) - for a different experience, stay in Calistoga, a lovely little town where there are hot springs resorts (I like to stay at either Indian Springs or Calistoga Spa Hot Springs).

For Yosemite, you'll need to make reservations now (yes, I mean NOW!). It may be fun to stay in a tent cabin at Camp Curry, or for a fancier experience, the Ahwanee or the Wawona. This park is not to be missed.

Have you considered a drive between Los Angeles and San Francisco? There are some charming beach towns along the way (like Santa Cruz, Carmel, Monterey, San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara) if you take Highway 1, and you can stop at Hearst Castle, which is really stunning.

Have a wonderful time!

Is a 4x4 necessary for a surfing adventure in Western Australia?

I will be flying into Perth and spending a week in Western Australia. I would like to surf as much as possible and visit many natural sites in the area's National Parks. Is it necessary to rent a 4x4 or will I be OK with a small automobile?

Answer
Are you really serious about surfing? If you are I would definitely recommend getting a 4x4 as a lot of the great surf spots are almost hidden and you have to drive on the sand dunes to get to them. There are some great places accessible by roads but I would say get a 4x4 and have a bit of adventure whilst you are here as well, it will definitely open up a lot of opportunities especially as you can go off roading while you are not surfing and you can camp out and things like that, it will also make the driving more comfortable as you will have more room for your board and luggage.

was Tasmania separated culturally from mainland Australia for thousands of years before European discovery?

Q.

Answer
Archaeological exploration has established the existence of human habitation certainly no less than 20,000 and possibly as early as 30,000 years ago, when Tasmania was physically part of greater Australia. As to who these early settlers were, some stone implements that have been found correlate with Pleistocene examples found on the Australian continent, suggesting a continuity with populations there up to that time. How those people relate to later continental Aboriginal people remains a matter of debate, though at the time of Western contact, the Aborigines of Tasmania were apparently physically, linguistically and culturally distinct from their nearest "mainland" neighbours.

It may be presumed that most Tasmanian settlement sites from that period of glaciation and low sea levels (c.18,000 BP), being coastal, were progressively flooded as sea-levels rose, isolating Tasmania c.12,000 BP and reaching present levels c.6,000 BP. From that time until European invasion of the island, though like other indigenous Australians the people had a nomadic life pattern, settlement sites remained well-defined and continuously re-visited, and socially connected groups (often inexactly called "tribes") clearly identified territories to which they had exclusive access. There were some ten mutually-incomprehensible languages among the 4-6,000 people living in Tasmania at the beginning of the 19th Century, and there was reportedly also considerable physical diversity between groups.

After the sea rose to create Bass Strait, the Australian mainland and Tasmania became separate land masses, and the Aborigines who had migrated from mainland Australia became cut off from their cousins on the mainland. Because neither side had ocean sailing technology, the two groups were unable to maintain contact. It has been a long held view that because of the ocean divide, and unlike other populations around the world, the small population of Tasmania was not able to share any of the new technological advances being made by mainland groups such as barbed spears, bone tools of any kind, boomerangs, hooks, sewing, and the ability to start a fire thus making Tasmanian Aborigines the simplest people on Earth. However, they did possess fire with the men entrusted in carrying embers from camp to camp for cooking and which could also be used to clear land and herd animals to aid in hunting practices. Another school of thought holds that because food was so abundant compared to mainland Australia the Aborigines had no need for a better technology, pointing out that they did in fact originally possess bone tools which dropped out of use as the effort to make them began to exceed the benefit they provided.

It has been suggested that approximately 4,000 years ago, the Tasmanian Aborigines largely dropped scaled fish from their diet, and began eating more land mammals such as possums, kangaroos, and wallabies. They also switched from worked bone tools to sharpened stone tools. The significance of the disappearance of bone tools (believed to have been primarily used for fishing related activities) and fish in the diet is heavily debated. Some argue that it is evidence of a maladaptive society while others argue that the change was economic as large areas of scrub at that time were changing to grassland providing substantially increased food resources. Fish were never a large part of the diet, ranking behind shellfish and seals, and with more resources available the cost/benefit ratio of fishing may have become too high. Archaeological evidence indicates that around the time these changes took place the Tasmanian tribes began expanding their territories, a process that was still continuing when Europeans arrived. It is now believed that they also constructed basic wooden shelters and small domed 'huts' to protect themselves during chilly winter months, although it seems they preferred to live in cave dwellings.

Changes in the social, cultural and territorial structures of the Tasmanian people over time are largely unknown. However, there is evidence that around 3500 years ago scale fish were dropped from from the people's diet and they increased their consumption of land animals such as kangaroos and wallabies. The women collected abalones, oysters, mussels and other shellfish and the remains of these form enormous middens around Tasmania's coastline. At about this time they also stopped using bone tools, and refined their making of stone tool implements. Canoes were used during the last 2000 years to travel to islands to harvest mutton birds and seals during summer and autumn. As a mainly nomadic people, Tasmanian people followed the seasonal changes in food supply, such as shellfish, seabirds, wallaby and a variety of vegetable foods.

What are some nice places in Africa to visit?

Neishawn

I am thinking of going to Africa in the future. I know that most of the continent is in poverty right now. I would like to know, what would be some very nice rich areas to go to. That would be completely safe and a lot like the U.S. A friend of mine went and said it isn't as bad as what they show on TV or what you read in the paper. You would have to go see for yourself. Do you know any good areas? I am use to places like NYC, LA, ATL, and MIAMI. Someone told me that Johannesburgh was a good area. Please help....DON'T BOTHER TO COMMENT IF YOU'VE NEVER BEEN TO AFRICA. (No smart comments) Thanks.... Planing the trip this summer...

Answer
Alright let's see:

Uganda (kampala): check out the source of the nile. You can go rafting (they sometimes have parties by the nile...REALLY fun), camping, bungee jumping and all that jazz.

Kenya (Nairobi) although i wouldn't recommend it right now because of the civil unrest . They have gorgeous reserves (safari and awesome hotels)

Seychelles (Almost an african miami)

I've been to many African countries but these are my favourite ones.
It depends on what you want to see. If you want history you should go to west africa (senegal and benin were both slave trade spots). They are both awesome countries but they are french speaking.

If you want fun activities you're better off in south africa, or east africa.

Please get vaccinated

(watch out for malaria. You get it from mosquitoes. If you catch it and go back West you won't be able to cure it because western medicine doesn't know it. I am totally serious. It is a fatal sickness. Talk to your doctor and see a doctor in Africa)

Have fun :) you'll have a blast wherever you choose to go
