Where are some good places to go camping?

Im planning a camping trip for me and my boyfriend this summer. We want to be away from everyone but i dont want it to just be some place in the woods. i want it to be somewhere beautiful with breath taking scenery. somewhere in new jersey would be nice but somehow i dont think im going to find what im looking for here lol but anywhere that could be a days drive away would be perfect. any ideas?

Answer
I believe the three most scenic camping spots in NJ are the northwest corner along the Kittatinny Mountain Range (Stokes State Forest, High Point State Park), a bit farther south and on the Delaware River (Bulls Island State Park, though it might still be closed due to flood damage from last year), and the NJ Pinelands (Wharton State Forest, Bass River State Forest, Brendan T. Byrne State Forest).

A day's drive from central NJ can put you as far south as Florida, almost halfway across the US, or deep into several provinces in eastern Canada. The number of beautiful places within that area are too numerous to list. It's hard to choose a favorite, but Acadia National Park on the eastern coast of Maine would be high on the list, and it never gets as crowded as the popular parks out west.
.

Camping in NJ or at least the northeast?

Basil

Hi, my friends and I are looking to go camping. But we would like to sort of backpack into the woods and find a remote area by a water source and make a fire and camp out for the weekend. We don't really wanna go to one of those campsites that have benches and running water etc. Are there any cool places in NJ, PA, NY, or anywhere around there that allow that?

Answer
Harriman State Park is great. its right off the palisades Pkwy and Seven Lakes Drive. All the camping is remote. Then of course there is the famed Catskills and Adirondacks in NY. Dont overlook the Appalachian trail its all remote camping.

Then you have the Allegheny Mtns and Delaware Water Gap in Pa. NJ has the Pine Barrens

Click on the map for different hikes (all hikes are remote):

What are the funnest, best and cheapest camp sites along the coasts of Washington, Oregon and California?

Rene H

I'm looking for campsites along the coasts of Washington, Oregon and California that are in good locations and that are not too expensive. I'll be going during the summer so I'de also need to know if reservations are required.
I'de love campsites that have beach access, that are full of fun people (mostly teenagers and young adults) to meet and that are near fun places to visit. Please let me know about any experiences, both good and bad, you have had. Thanks!

Answer
I live in Washington. Last fall my sister and I drove down the Oregon coast. In Oregon, many of the State Parks have yurts. They are tents built on platforms and are very cool. They are cheap, around 17-25 dollars a night. Go to Oregon State Parks.com and you will find all the parks along the coastal region.
I have travelled along the Pacific Coast from Washington to San Diego, Ca. Highway 1 goes right next to the ocean and is so beautiful. There are many good campsites. Have fun.

Isolated camping sites? Near Virginia?

happy

Hello
Do you have any ideas of an isolated camping sites near Virginia ? Where maybe you can reserve a spot, so we won't see another people camping and enjoy being isolated and enjoy nature. Close to Virginia. With lakes maybe a waterfall and that pets(dog ) can swim in the lakes.( I heard some camps don't slow dogs to swim) and tons and tons of wildlife like bears, deer and squirrels and birds and more . And hicking and fishing . Mosquitos are not a problem but we don't want them to be all over the place. *and the camping place has to be near Maryland Virginia and Washington, D.C..
*lake where dogs can swim
*lots of wildlife (preffered black bears and deer is a plus.
*highking trails
*reservig place including the lake for 5 days online so please include a website

Thanks for answering

Answer
Dispersed camping on remote National Forest lands will allow you to find places where you may see no one during the entire week. However, please remember that dogs do not mix well with bears, mountain lions, deer, or moose.

Are there any summer camps in Melbourne worth going to?

Gabriella

Answer
Hi depending how old the ppl are u want to be going etc..

Check Yellow pages of Holiday camps etc will give plenty of places..â¥

Travel ideas for young adults in Melbourne.?

Ui

i want to go somewhere with like 5 friends but i don't know where i want there to be a place where yo can relax, play guitar, go swimming, shops to look around and stuff.

Answer
Well ... Hamilton Island aint Melbourne !!!

SO... lets answer your actual question :)

At this time of year the weather is great for any beach side location ..

Try looking at places such as Wye River ...it is close to Lorne, lovely beaches, great camping facilities which are right on the beach .. but a little quiter and more low key then larger holiday areas such as Lorne.
(Apollo Bay also a good option in this area!!)

Phillip Island is another good option ... very relaxed, good shopping, swimming, walks and lots to see and do (great wild life - fairy penguins, koala's, kangeroos etc)

Sorrento .. good fun ... more of a hip 'toffs' location then the other options .. but some great beaches and fantastic walks.

Ocean Grove ... great beaches, very relaxed

Hope this helps

Summer camps in Europe?

...*

Hi, I know that this question is asked all the time but anyway.... For next summer I am looking for a summer camp that is somewhere like france or spain, I would even go to places like scandinavia. Most of the camps I have looked at are quite expensive, maybe around £2000-3000. These are usually specialist camps like art or language camps. I'm not looking for a specialist camp, more maybe along the lines of camping in a tent sort of thing I would prefer. My parents probably wouldn't pay more than about £700 and the max. i would go for would be 2 weeks.

Other details.
-No camps in America, Asia or Africa, has to be Europe.
-I am 13, but will be 14 by next summer, when i want to go to camp.
-I would prefer co-ed to a girls camp, but i dont really mind.
-I am from the UK
-I dont particularly want to go to a language camp, as they are very expensive.

Thanks!!!

Answer
Here's a list of summer camps in Spain, France, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Norway, Malta and Germany.
The Teenagers Abroad organisation is reputable.
I think it would be difficult to get a camp for two weeks for £700.

Where to visit in Switzerland?

Jennica

I have approximately 5 days in Switzerland. I will be coming from Italy and returning there. I'm thinking of buying the 4 day Swiss pass for trains and buses and was wondering what is the best route to take, I'd like to see some great scenery and some of the more popular places. I don't mind sleeping on the train between places. I like caving, want to try parasailing in S. and I will be there in late March/early April. Thanks!
The latest I can go is early April.... I will be in Italy February-April 12th. I cannot bring a tent or sleeping bag; I will only be traveling with 1 carryon. Looks like I will be doing b&b's))).. The info about no sleeper trains was helpful. I prefer traveling over taking lessons for parasailing... I was under the impression that I would be able to fly right away if paired with a professional. Basically, I would like to include some memorable activity besides the sightseeing the beautiful scenery. Thanks, guys!

Answer
Don't come to Switzerland in late March/early April. This usually is the worst season as it's dump and cold here. The earliest to come if you want to travel is May (however, this year April was a lovely month).

Travelling on the public transport system is a wise idea, I strongly recommend it. However forget sleeping on the train, there are no night trains here like in other countries, distances are short and you would only miss half of the beauty of this country if you slept on the train. Bring a tent instead, you may sleep in a forest and safe the high fees for a camp ground.

Additionally, seeing the beauty of this country, doing caving and parasailing in only five days is impossible to do. Such a program would take at least two to three weeks. So, let us know what you prefer - travelling or caving and parasailing (the latter already taking at least a week's course before you fly anywhere), edit your question and we'll be only too happy to assist.
_________________________________________

Well, after giving us details, I suggest a round trip. But again, be reminded that you risk travelling in rain or even snow. Also be reminded that B&B can't be found anyhwere in Switzerland (certainely not in cities). But there are plenty of Youth Hostels around, see their Swiss website: http://www.youthhostel.ch/home.html?&L=1 . You could of course do paired parasailing, but I doubt you'll find anybody at this time of the year who will be willing to take you for a ride.

1st day: Coming from Italy/Como/Chiasso, travel by train directly on to Zurich. Visit this cosmopolitan town. There are many threads about it, enter "Zurich" into the "Search for questions" windows or see my suggestion here: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Au1oIN6XxtR.UWvRCh2omfTty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20090505073243AAjXQN8&show=7#profile-info-wZ87GnYYaa . Overnight at the Youth Hostel (like a real hotel).

2nd day: By train to Lucerne and on to Engelberg. Go up to mount Titlis (http://www.titlis.ch/index.php?id=134&lang=en ), enjoy the breathtaking view as well as the snow in the sun at 3.200 m (10'600 feet) above sea level. Bring a thick cardigan as it might be - 10 ° C (13 ° F). Have a typical Swiss meal in one of the many restaurants in Engelberg, overnight at the Youth Hostel (http://www.youthhostel.ch/hosteldetails.html?&user_hostels_pi1[bez]=ENG&cHash=6ca73c2f39 ) or at a B&B.

3rd day: Get up early, take the train down to the valley, change train at Hergiswil, take the train in the opposite direction over Brünig pass to Brienz. For a pesonalized timetable, see here: http://fahrplan.sbb.ch/bin/query.exe/en . Brienz, at the shores of Lake Brienz, is famous for its many wooden chalets and wood carving shops. Go up via cog railway (some trains with scenic, authentic steam engine) to Brienzer Rothorn (http://www.brienz-rothorn-bahn.ch/en.html ). Inquire if there are parasailing flights from up there. Overnight at the Youth Hostel in Brienz (http://www.youthhostel.ch/hosteldetails.html?&user_hostels_pi1[bez]=BRZ&cHash=ea0f0ee259 ) or at a B&B.

4th day: Via Interlaken (don't expect anything there, it's not much more than a huge train station) to Berne. Visit Switzerland's capital (http://www.swisstherme.ch/attachments/Image/Bern/Bern_luftaufnahme.png ), see the old town, buy a typcial gift, "Läbchueche" (http://www.exlibris.ch/images_buch/96/2543696.jpg ) ,hop on the train to Lucerne, Lugano and back to Italy.

This will be a rush - but since you don't want or can't spend more time, this is the utmost you can do. Come back soon, there is a trillion of things to do, they all wait for you.

touring caravan sites in north wales?

Sharon M

we want to book a caravan site in north wales...we have our own caravan and 2 children. We would like somewhere lively.... any suggestions thanks

Answer
Depends What you call lively, the site or the area, we stay at Cadnant Valley Camping and Caravan site in Caernarfon (they have a website) under Cwm Cadnant Valley. The site is basic, electric hookup/toilets showers/laundry/playground but is 5minutes walking distance from the town centre.
If it is the site itself you want lively i.e. clubhouse then you want to be somewhere around Rhyl.

What family tents are good now-a-days?

ping_man9

I am planning on setting up a family trip for me, my 19 month old son, my fiance and her 5 year old son. So needless to say i need something comfortable and roomy. I would like a multi-room, something with great weather/bug resistance, ie.. rain, bugs. I used to go camping all of the time when I was younger but we're talking 20 plus years ago, in a camper. I could also use any info on comfy sleeping bags, and cooking accessories... thanks

Eureka is by far the best maker of large family tents.

Need help finding a family tent.?

bls1177

My family and I are going to the Smokey Mountain National park at the end of August and need a new tent. We have been looking around at tents and need some advice. We are and plan in the future to do car camping so weight is not the biggest concern but do not want a giant that it takes two to carry. We have been looking at the REI Base camp 6 and it seems great but it is expensive at $400 + footprint = $450. But if that is a great tent and a value when all things are considered then so be it. If any one has any thoughts I would love to hear them. I have been camping many times but this is my wife and 3 year old daughters second time. I think I want a 3 season with medal poles for strength and a vestibule for cooking if the weather is bad. Thanks for the help in advance

Answer
You might look at some Eureka tents. In my opinion they have the best quality for the money and they also have the largest selection.
http://www.eurekatent.com/
Their Canadian website has some nice tents that aren't listed on their American site.
Once you find a make and model you like Bizrate is a good place to shop for the best price.

I picked up a $630 Eureka Tunnel Vision for $325 using Bizrate and that included free shipping and no taxes.

where can i camp near berkeley California?

Jake B

I am working in Berkeley over the summer and I want to get some peace and quite on the down time. I really want to camp but it seems there is no where close that is any cheaper then a hotel or hostel. Please help a Colorado boy camp in Cali

Answer
There is nowhere cheap because California state parks have had to hike rates up a LOT in recent years to stay afloat.

I highly recommend Angel Island, if you are able to carry your equipment on an easy ~2 mile paved walk. Campsites 4, 5, and 6 have million dollar views of the San Francisco skyline; the other sites have views of the Oakland/East Bay skyline. The island is crowded during the day, but after the last ferry leaves the only people on the island are the few campers and rangers, so you really feel that you have the island and the view all to yourself. If you go here, you'll need reservations ASAP.

For car camping, some regional parks near Berkeley that may be cheaper than state parks. Keep in mind that many of these parks get hot and dry in the summer so campfires may not be allowed:

Anthony Chabot Regional Park
Del Valle Regional Park
Sunol Regional Wilderness

If you want a more typical camping experience with big trees and campfires, look into various National Forests, which will be a bit of a drive but very doable for a short trip. Mendocino, El Dorado, Tahoe, and Plumas National Forests are within day trip range. For something closer to home, here are some more local parks that are heavily forested, and may be cheaper than state parks:

Memorial County Park
Sanborn County Park
Uvas Canyon County Park
Mt. Madonna County Park

For any of the local parks, you will most likely need to make reservations in advance, especially for the weekend. The national forests will be less crowded, and many if not most or all of their campsites are first come first served.

Great scary place to explore?

Alton

I live in Bay Area at Cali. Near sf. I want to go with my friend and explore a scary creepy place and camp outside or sleep there. Any ideas?

Answer
Many of the purportedly "haunted" places in Northern California (Winchester House, Alcatraz) are off limits to campers. But here are some interesting options:

- Angel Island was a POW camp during World War II. There are a lot of bunkers and abandoned military sites. From 1910 to 1940, the island was also a processing center for Asian immigrants. It felt more like a prison though. This was long before the civil rights movement. And because of America's racial laws, these immigrants were treated far more badly than European immigrants coming into Ellis Island on the East Coast. Many arrivals were held for years before being allowed onto the mainland.

- The Marin Headlands has a lot of bunkers and abandoned missile silos. The Point Bonita Lighthouse with its extremely dense fog and rickety wood bridge is also really creepy (especially at night). The coyotes who live in the headlands tend to howl quite a bit at night as well.

- Sugarloaf Ridge State Park in Sonoma has a campground and is close to Jack London State Park. The park is home to Jack London's "Wolf House." It burnt down in 1913 before he could move in and was replaced with a far more modest cottage. However, the impressive stone ruins remain. And they look like something straight out of a gothic novel. The author's grave is also located within the park.

- There are numerous campsites around Donner Lake State Park. The lake is named after the infamous Donner Party. In the winter of 1846, a group of settlers from Illinois attempted to cross the Sierra Nevada mountain range. They got caught up in a massive snow storm and set up camp on the shores of the lake. But there was no food. The survivors finally reached Sacramento in the spring of 1847. Subsequent investigations by the authorities suggested that they may have resorted to violence and cannibalism. But without any concrete proof of foul play, no murder charges were ever filed.

Tents for family camping?

B

Does anyone know where I could buy a tent ( online or in store ) that would be fire retardant FREE . ..?
I really need a new tent but I want to get one with no fire retardants.

Answer
I believe most tents have fire retardant. Your best bet would be one of the canvas tent suppliers. They make tepees and period tents from canvas and some are made to order. I'll bet they make a tent and then add the fire retardant. They would probably be the mfg. that has what you require.

Answer
I recently went camping with a bunch of my boyfriend's friends and this is what I brought (and wished I brought!)

--tent/sleeping bag/maybe air mattress/pillow (obvious)
--picnic table cover (looks kind of like a mesh tent) to keep raccoons/bugs away from your food
--a tarp
--extra clothes
--towel (if there's a beach nearby or you're planning to shower)
--with above.. shampoo + conditioner and a brush
--toothbrush + toothpaste
--flashlight (definitely! with extra batteries in hand)
--lots of plastic bags (big garbage bags too if you're planning to party =P)
--napkins (surprisingly, we ran out pretty quick)
--toliet paper (I really wished I brought this one)
--water bottles
--band aids! trust me, people get hurt lol
--bug repellent
--after bite (because sometimes bug repellent doesn't completely work :P)
--fishing rod (if you're planning to fish?)
--magazines, video games, cards .. anything to keep you from boredom when you're trapped inside your tent in case it rains!
--cups, plates, etc
--plenty of firewood
--foldable chairs (definite yes!)
--a big bag of fluffy marshmellows <3 (bring some prongs to poke them too!)

Have fun on your trip!!

BTW.We are not doing any hunting hiking we're just wanting to have the overnight camping experience.=]Thanks

Answer
Big Bear is tooooo cold now for camping. Wonderful places on the beach north of Malibu (State Parks) , 40 minutes and North of Ventura , hour and half, Get their County park system info 805-649-1122. Extremely difficult to get reservations in the summer, but now, especially on a week day is good. Call 805-654-3951: Faria and Rincon Park Way are first come basis, Hobson is reservations. If they are full for reservatons, as the State Park in Carpenteria often is, show up early on day you wish to camp and get someone's no show. Also great beach camping north of Santa Barbara (All State Parks). Two and half hours. If it is foggy at beach (as it has been the past week) then there is Lake Casitas, north of Ventura on way to Ojai, hour and half to two hours, call 805-647-1122 , lots of camping close to water. Select site appropriate for you as there can be partying noise into the night at some sites. If reservations are full and for on spur of moment you can call individual camp ground for a place. Have fun. I love camping in all of the above! There is more rustic camping higher into Ventura County's mountains to may wish to explore on Internet or calling around for info.

best camp grounds near los angeles?

Answer
Depends on what you mean by LA area. If you mean the immediate LA area, there aren't many. Check out rvparkreviews.com to see the few that are in the LA area. There's Dockweiler (County beach, NOT state beach), which is right on the beach at Playa Del Rey. Then there's Malibu Beach RV Park, which is on the hill ABOVE the beach, across PCH. Technically, this is not on the beach, since you have to cross PCH to get to the beach. It's an older park with VERY tight spots, even for tent trailers. However, the sweeping views tend to make people forget about the other issues, like the grumpy managers, Stalinistic regulations, and the abundance of permanent residents with their associated clutter. That's it for LA County Beach Parks. I don't count Leo Carillo State Beach, it has no hookups (and it's on the north side of PCH, to boot).

Others, which are not on the beach, include East Shore, Featherly, Fairplex KOA, and a few in Anaheim.

If you are interested in RV parks within 100 miles, your possibilities open up quite a bit. From LA south to San Diego:

Newport Dunes: The Cadillac of RV parks. But the prices are at least double that of the state parks. If I wanted to spend that much, I'd get a hotel room.

Doheney State Beach: No hookups, but you are right on the beach. Plan your life 6-7 months in advance, because this is popular.

San Clemente State Beach: Once again, no hookups, and you are on the bluffs above the beach.

San Onofre State Beach: Unless you are a HARD CORE surfer, this is not a good place to camp. Camped here once, never again. You are 10 feet from the RR tracks, 20 feet from I-5. If you're lucky, you get to be right next to the border checkpoint, with flashing lights all night. And it's 1/4 mile walk
to the beach. Loud teens and twenty-somethings up late, and no ranger enforcement of quiet time. Great if you're a college-aged person and want to surf and party, but rotten for families.

South Carlsbad SB: Not a bad campground, but no hookups. On the bluffs above the beach. Great for whale watching during migration season.

San Elijo SB: Same as South Carlsbad, but with HOOKUPS in a few sites. Once again, you need to be on reserveamerica.com on the first of the month, six months in advance.

Campland on the Bay: Private campground on the north end of Mission Bay. Close to Sea World. Excellent location, lots of organized activities, but you pay for it. Full amenities here, like Newport Dunes: Water, electric, sewer, cable, good camp store. It has everything, and is close to Sea World.

Now, let's travel northward from LA County to Santa Barbara:

Point Mugu State Park, which consists of Broome State Beach and Sycamore Canyon. No hookups. Thornhill Broome campground is on the beach. This is a lonely bit of windswept beach, near a naval base. The nice part is that it's less crowded. However, that's because of the wind.

Mc Grath SB: Nice enough campground, no hookups. However, about 1/4 mile walk to beach across dunes.

Emma Wood SB: No hookups here, but you can park right by the water, which crashes against the rocks on the breakwater.

Carpinteria: Now we're talking. This has sites with hookups, as well as non-hookup sites. The best area is Santa Rosa, which has full hookups. San Miguel has water and electric, but no sewer. If you have a rig about 24' or less, then try to get beach row in Santa Rosa. If you have a longer rig, up to 30', you will need to camp in Long Row. This is one of the most popular campgrounds in the State (along with San Elijo)

El Capitan and Refugio State Beach: Neither has hookups, but they are very nice campgrounds about 2 miles apart. Refugio is on the beach level, and El Cap is on the bluffs above the beach.

That's about it, have fun!

I am looking for amazing places to visit on Vancouver Island.?

TS

We are going to the island for our honeymoon and we want to make the most of it! We are a younger, outdoorsy couple who prefer drinking around a campfire to a club.

Looking for:
-Places to stay, we would like to camp a few nights here and there but also spend time in B&B's

-Hike ideas! We want to see everything, the beaches and sea life, the rain forests, the mountains...and we'd like to canoe or kayak.

We were at one time experienced hikers but living in the city has made us a bit soft.
We're soo excited for this trip of a lifetime, any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Answer
Yep, don't miss Tofino and its wonderful beaches, but book ahead. It gets busy, and be ready for a little sticker shock. Accommodation's not cheap there. Even campgrounds are more than elsewhere. Excellent place to stay is Crystal Cove, which has cabins and campsites and a very nice little beach which is wonderful to walk on at night. Government campground at Green Point can be booked solid a couple of months ahead in summer. If you don't mind being away from the Park a little, there's Toquart Bay, a BC Forest Service campsite and a fine place to launch a kayak from.

Something slightly different is taking a freight and passenger boat from Port Alberni to Bamfield, run by Lady Rose Marine Services. Leaves 8 am, gets back about 5 or 6. Along the way they stop at wherever there's something or someone to pick up or deliver. It's a nice glimpse of how very many more people used to live on the BC coast. The company will rent kayaks to you, or take yours as freight and drop you off. There are B & Bs in Bamfield and you can camp on the Broken Islands.

If you go to Tofino to camp, you have to stop in Coombs on the way there at the Goats on the Roof store. Excellent food shopping--deli, bakery, veggies in summer, cheese and milk, etc, and a cafe, and more. Tofino is pretty limited for food buying.

Check out Cape Scott. Hiking the whole way there is demanding and requires being thoroughly prepared but a day hike to Eric Lake or San Josef Bay(that'd be my choice) would be no big deal if you're reasonably fit.

Also check out Cowichan Bay. Lots of B&Bs in the area, pretty countryside once you're off the highway, and the town itself is a neat little place to hang out on a summer day or evening. Miracle Beach, north of Courtenay, is a really nice campground. Next door is Saratoga Beach, no camping but lots of sand. Close by, you can walk from one pub to another. Yes, really. Between the Fisherman's Lodge on the Oyster River and the Salmon Point pub, there's a trail through forest and along the river and beach, about an hour at most one way, just enough to get thirsty, nice walking. Visit Telegraph Cove if you go north to Cape Scott. Try Sointula.

what are you supposed to take when you go camping?

Its gonna be my first time and was wondering what food and other stuff you can take
its going to be in a tent at a campground in new jersey next week

Answer
There's lots of checklists you can look at. The REI lists at http://www.rei.com/expertadvice/articles/family+camping+checklist.html are pretty good. Whether you need to pack everything or someone else in your group handles most of the campsite gear will be something you need to discuss. But I get the impression that you're a teen going with parents, so I'll assume you're just worried about your personal needs.

Tent with poles, stakes and ground sheet
Tarp, easy-up or screen room to eat/hang-out under if it rains
Sleeping bag (or blanket) and mattress or cot
Pillow or pillow case to stuff with spare clothes
Folding chair, stool or camp seat
Clean socks and underwear for each day
Clean shirt and pants every two days
(Note: long shirt sleeves and pants provide better sun, bug and brush protection when hiking. Synthetic materials are lighter, pack more compactly and dry quicker than denim and cotton.)
Bathing suit
Sweat pants, hoodie or sweatshirt, watch cap or toque
Rain poncho or jacket, and pants
Ball cap
Comfortable hiking shoes/boots or cross-trainers
Flip-flops or crocs to wear around camp and in showers
One or two towels (synthetic pack towels work best)
Bath bag w/ soap, shampoo, toothbrush/paste, floss, deodorant, comb
Baby wipes (for quick, waterless clean-ups)
If needed, spare eyeglasses, contact lenses and cleaning stuff
If needed, feminine hygiene supplies
Flashlight & spare batteries
Water bottle
Pocket knife (age/experience dependent)
Signal whistle and/or mirror

Depending on where exactly you're going and the type of camping, you might need other things such as a water filter or purification tablets, bag shower, backpacking stove, cookset, knife/fork/spoon, etc...

You might want to bring a camera, binoculars, journal and pencils, maps, field guides for plants and/or birds, playing cards, or other recreational items.

Usually the adults will take care of food and beverages. If you bring your own the choices depend on the type of camping. If you will have a cooler you can bring almost anything, but without a cooler you'll need to rely on dehydrated meal packets and non-perishable foods such as rice, beans, jerky, canned goods and the like. But remember that you should not bring food in or near your tent to avoid attracting animals, even if it is sealed. Whatever food you bring should be kept in a separate bag and hung at least 10' off the ground, between two trees. Bears, racoons and skunks are present in most NJ campgrounds, but they will not bother you if you keep a clean campsite and prepare, eat and hang your food away from your tent.

Best places to camp in Ohio? (State Parks)?

Andrew L

I am planning on going camping in October with 3 other people on a weekend, so I'd like to find a place in Ohio so it won't be too far off (I live near Columbus).

I'd like to find a place with cool trails that offers (preferably) non-electric tent camping sites. I don't want RV camping or places that are too man-made.

I camped at Hocking Hills State Park and loved it, so something similar to that (but NOT that - we want to find a new area) would be cool.
Also, any good parks that are close to Ohio in bordering states would be good. michigan, indiana, west virginia, kentucky, whatever

Answer
Walk About Campgrounds south of Zanesville Ohio were a Great place for us to camp . Our teen grandson loved it and we had a great time too. We rented a cabin and there are trails and lots of scenery and no one near the two cabins.

are there any secluded places to camp in ohio?

amos

is there a place in ohio that is not run by a campground, just a place you could go and camp in the wilderness next to some river or lake with pristine beauty, preferably in the north half of ohio or in western PA, please give me an address and directions from cleveland ohio and if possible, a picture if you know of a place that is very secluded and beautiful to camp at.

Answer
If you go to the Allegheny Trail in Pennsylvania you can camp outside, although it is really the wilderness...there is a place called the Tanbark Trail...however the whole trail runs from the southern states up into New York state...it is a well-traveled area, and if you find a map you will probably be able to track it easily...mountains, hills, boulders, lakes, sometimes cabins, lean-tos, etc...bring your gear! If I remember it runs somewhat through the central part of Penn...wish I could tell more! Have Fun!!!

Where is a good place for tent camping in the Western Carolinas or Eastern Tennessee?

Patti C

We are looking for a place where we can drive to a campsite, then pitch our tent. So many campsites either require you to backpack in your stuff, or they are just for you to park your RV.

Any ideas... our tent is fairly large.

Answer
I've camped on the Blue Ridge parkway, at the Smokies, at Mount Mitchell State Park, NC (you can camp at the top at the state park or there are private campgrounds below it), New River State Park, NC (there are drive in and canoe in sites), Stone Mountain State Park, NC, and I've wanted to camp at South Mountain State Park, NC.

In Hot Springs, NC the private campground is on the French Broad River, on the Appalachian Trail, has a great little town, and has hot tubs!

I've camped in NC in Nantahala National Forest , Linville Gorge, Roan Mountain, TN area, and wanted to camp in Mt Rogers, Joyce Kilmer and Shining Rock areas, but haven't gotten to it yet.

Have Fun!

camping/climbing sites?

zcall27

Ive been climbing for about a year and lately ive had the idea to tour around the US and camp and climb at a bunch of good sites in the future. im not to familar with many places outside of texas (where im from).
it would be ideal to be able to camp in the area. just a nature buff and would like to enjoy the outdoors as much as i can.
just the name of any places you may have in mind would be awesome! thanks!

Answer
A few of my favorites come to mind.

Joshua Tree in Southern California, has tent sites around the park but do fill up fast during popular seasons.

Smith Rock in Oregon. There is cheap field camping there (or there used to be) right on high river bank that over looks all those wonderful sport routes.

Devils Tower Wyoming has an awesome camp ground right at the base, as well as a private camp ground just outside the park.

On the East coast there is Seneca Rocks WV with a couple good camping areas just out side the park.

And Arcadia Nation Park in Maine with great sea side climbing a cool via ferreta and lots of camp grounds from primitive to full hook up.

Enjoy!

Camping places in england?

Hello

I am turning 18 soon and me and 6 other friends wanted to do the pennines way walk, which is 268 miles along the backbone of England (the pennines). We are not doing this anymore as you are not allowed to wild camp or make fires.

I was wondering if there is anywhere in England where you are allowed to do Bear Grylls type things like making fires and setting traps and wild camping, or is it against the law in every place?

Thanks.

Answer
Against the law in all of England. You will need to come to the USA.

wavebreak island Qld, camping help?

Nathan

Hey everyone,

me and a couple of friends are planning on going camping on wavebreak island for the long weekend.

just wondering if you're allowed to just pitch a tent wherever you like over there?
and is there firewood? thats all i can really think of at the moment! bring on the weekend

Answer
The only place in USA where citizens camp wherever they please for free
is in National Forest; open fire isn't allowed and Federal District Offices
can inform you of other rules that are being enforced by paid staff. There
are other Federal, State, County and municipal property posted regarding
public usage. These lands are regulated and supervised. Private property
is just that and either you have use authorization from owner or suffer from
legal consequences. American judicial and penal systems are crowded
with people who never honestly thought they would experience either. You
get one telephone call after arrival at jail; decide now who best to contact.

What kind of tent should we get?

TaDa

I don't know anything about camping, but we're a family of four and will be going on camping trips with the Boy and Girl Scouts. What kind of tent should we get? What style? (Idiot-proof set-up would be good.) What's a good brand? (We're in Texas, so we're more likely to be camping when it's hot not cold.) Thanks!

Answer
For car-camping I always advise families to get a separate three-man, three-season, nylon dome tent for each two or three people. Maybe some families enjoy a slumber party atmosphere the first night, but by the second night I'll bet most people would prefer a little privacy.

Some people see one of those big two or three room "cabin" tents and think that's the answer, but those things are overkill, often too large for the campsite.

Even though you're camping in the summer, a dome tent with full rain fly is essential in case of a freak storm. If it's hot you can take it off, unlike a cabin tent which is usually just one layer. Some dome tents have more mesh screen rather than nylon on the inner layer and those would be the coolest.

REI http://www.rei.com/ has many good quality tents, including their own brand which are a great deal. http://www.rei.com/product/745955

If there's any chance the Scouts might be going on a backpacking trip sometime in the future, and are required to bring a tent, you might want to think about the weight of that second "kids" tent and instead try to buy the lightest 2 man, 3 season tent. This one is reasonably light for two people to share carrying it. http://www.rei.com/product/705525

I just remembered, after all that, that I also always advise people never to buy tents, sleeping bags, backpacks, etc. for their first camping trip(s) and instead to borrow or rent the more expensive gear to give yourselves a chance to learn what your personal preferences are without spending big bucks. REI also rents tents, sleeping bags, pads, backpacks and camp stoves. They have six stores in TX: http://www.rei.com/FindStores?state=TX&radius=900

There's some great little ones in the Southern Dales, at villages like Burnsall, Kettlewell and Malham.

However, many campsites in the Dales tend to be small so don't have a great deal of facilities.

http://www.mysummercamps.com/search/CampGender/Girls/2

I would also check with your local YMCA they have a ton of overnight camps all over the US and run a great program. They also offer scholarships and grants to help people send their kids to camp. They also offer that multi kid discount
http://www.ywca.org/site/pp.asp?c=djISI6PIKpG&b=297642

I think it is great that you want to send your kids to camp! Some of my best memories are from my time at camp. I loved going every summer. Remember when you are choosing a camp to ask questions. Find out what the camps safety record is, what requirements they use for hiring their staff (are they trained in CPR). I would also check with the local B&B and see if they have had any complaints filed to them. Of course you can always ask for reviews on different websites. What a great way to spend the summer I am sure they are going to have a great time!

a good place to camp in norther california?

yukon

a good national forest or park where you can camp with a lots of trials and also that you can rent a boat ,bike in norther california max 4 hours from the san Fransisco bay

Answer
In the "Redding, California" area there are a lot things to do. Whether hiking, mountain biking or horseback riding - the land surrounding "Whiskeytown National Recreation Area" provides many opportunities for these activities.
"Shasta Lake" is a very popular camping destination. There is a broad spectrum of camping facilities, ranging from the primitive to the luxurious. At the upper end of the scale, there are 10 marinas and a number of resorts offering rental cabins, motel type accommodations, and RV parks and campgrounds with electric hook ups, swimming pools and showers. Additional information about facilities and services offered at private resorts is available at the Shasta Lake Visitor Information Center or on the web at www.fs.fed.us/r5/shastatrinity.

Places in jersey to party after prom?

RIcky

Where is a good place to party, with a few of my friends and some girls. Everyone from our school is going to wild wood, and we wanna do something else, so people we know won't mess things up, and cock block.

Answer
Go camping. That's what a lot of my friends did after prom. A couple of them went during the day and set up, everyone went to prom, and then ended up back at the campground.

There are a lot of campgrounds in south Jersey by the shore so you're still near the beach if people still want to do that.

I know we went to Pine Haven Campground, which is off the parkway (exit 17.)

Looking to go camping but where? (From NJ)?

sedated414

I want to go camping but i'm not sure where to go. I live in NJ and i'm willing to travel to get there within reason. I'd like to go somewhere quiet, with out a lot of people and that has a lot of nice views of mountains/lakes/ect. that has lots of places to hike/explore.

I'm not really looking for a camp ground but more of a authentic camping experience. Also are there places like that which are free to camp in? I'm not entirely sure how the whole thing works and and if you could put a link with any suggestions you may have that tell about the place/explain how it works that would be great. Thanks in advance.

Answer
from new jersey the closest place that has what you described is the adirondaacks of new york state....yes there are many places that are free up there but if not familiar with the area they nay be hard to find....

here are 2 of my favorite places:
blue mtn lake---rent a canoe and paddle to an island, free camping on the island--connects to 2 other ;ales plus a river down to a 3rd lake...hike castle rock mtn right from your canoe or paddle back to your car and hike up blue mtn--you should do both...this link lets you view the campsites

lake placid--highest mtns, historic olympic village, some lake views but mostly known for the High Peaks
this is a campgorund but very rustic and primitive

big sur camping...?

notreal17

me and my friends want to go camping and we came up with big sur but we dont want to be around a lot of other people because we are loud and we dont want to get kicked out... so where can we go camping in california around the monterey area or other placese where we can be like alone??... (we get loud and i dont think we will be sober)

Answer
Depends on when you are going and what type of amenities you are looking for. At Pfiffer big sur weyland site 166 is pretty secluded. and they got all the sissy stuff like water and showers etc. If you want more seclusion i.e. nobody around and dont care about showers etc, the bomb thing in that area is the Ventana Wilderness (also alot cheaper). if you hike in a bit you can be alone. just try to steer away from the private run campgrounds around there most of them are overcrowded and pretty much blow. plus they get real bitchy about noise, better to rough it a bit and not have to deal with someone whining.

Big Sur camping recommendations?

xXBluXx

I live near Big Sur, and I have been there multiple times. As a sort of celebration, a few friends and I are hoping to go backpacking and enjoy some peace and seclusion. However, I despise those huge RV campsites, even when they are empty. We don't need utilities (not even water). Is there any quiet, remote camp ground out in big sur? Any distance under 6 miles is fine. In fact, I'd prefer something that isn't road accessible.
Oh, and is dispersed camping allowed anywhere in Big Sur? That would be optimal.
We'd also love to be near some sort of river or creek, but that isn't necessary.
Thanks for your help!

Answer
Los Padres National Forest

One of the great treasures of the United States, the Los Padres National Forest is 1.75 million acres of diverse parkland, including many unspoiled, primitive wilderness areas. The Los Padres National Forest offers over 300 miles of rugged Big Sur hiking trails, as well as some of the best unspoiled Big Sur campsites.

Los Padres National Forest spans five counties: Monterey, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Kern. In Monterey County, Los Padres National Forest extends through Big Sur and out toward the Salinas Valley. It houses redwood groves, the California condor, and provides a refuge for 468 species of fish and wildlife, as well as endangered and sensitive plant species.

Camping

Los Padres National Forest houses 11 campgrounds holding many of Big Sur's campsites, ranging from primitive hike-in sites to fully featured modern campgrounds with showers that are capable of accommodating RVs of all sizes. Some campgrounds in Los Padres National Forest offer hunting, fishing, hiking, cycling, and horseback riding.

See the US Forest Service's Los Padres National Forest website for a list of every campsite in the Monterey District, as well as detailed information on each. Once you find one you like, visit Recreation.gov to make your Big Sur camping reservation

Hiking, Cycling and Horseback Riding

With 323 miles of hiking trails in the Monterey District of the Los Padres National Forest, even the most dedicated outdoor enthusiast could spend weeks exploring the area without walking twice in the same place. Short loops are perfect for a day hike, while the hardcore hiker or camper can spend days on these Big Sur hiking trails without ever seeing civilization.

Good camping spots near Bay Area?

Cheetofing

I live in San Francisco and me and some of my buddies want to go camping for the weekend. Problem is, we don't know where to go. What we're looking for would be something preferably 2-4 hours away from the city, and somewhere relatively remote. A lake would be nice too.

Answer
There are a few places up around Tahoe that have some primitive, more comparably remote camping, such as Buck Lake, etc. I will include a link.

http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/ltbmu/recreation/camping/dispersed.shtml

Another option, if you want space is Pyramid Lake in Nevada. Forget about shade, but it is a huge lake and finding space from others is never an issue, especially on the east side. It's on an indian reservation, so you have to buy a tribal camping permit. It is not expensive.

You have some options up around Eagle Lake (CA) as well. There are a number of places to camp where you can have space. Some of the lakes tucked further in are for certain remote.

You could always go up to some of the lakes around Truckee, CA like Boca, but they are from remote.

All of these locations have great fishing if you are into that. The season is closed at Pyramid for trout right now though.

Are there any good places for camping and bonfires in the bay area?

Camping Activities for a teen by herself?

Sasha

Hi :) So I'ma fourtteen year old girl and in a few days, my family and I are going on a camping trip (in a tent, not a caravan/camper van) and I'm really looking forward to it. But I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for some fun things that I could do as I'm an only child and I don't have any friends coming with me (besides lieks unbathing or reading). The camp site is right near the beach, my parents are the sort of people who will spend all there time lying around reading, but I want to do something and there are no nearby towns or anything to explore. There are like bush tracks but I'm a little bit scared to go on one of those by myself in case of snakes etc. So any ideas welcome! Please and Thank-you! xx

Answer
While camping one of the best ways to spend time is making yourself more comfortable. Firewood, maybe a clothes line to hang things on. How about this for a lady, make a little rack to put your socks on by the fire. Then when you put them on nice toasty feets. How about gathering some nuts and goodies for the animals. They come around camp and are used to campers feeding them. It is fun to see who comes to visit.

Take a camera if you enjoy having nice pictures to show. And above all go do allot of exploring. You can even go sit quietly in the forest and watch and listen to the animals going about their day. If you get good at it I like to follow a deer around through their day. Early mornings are the best time. Some amazing things go on everyday in the forest. One just needs to go out and watch. A den of fox kits are pretty cool to watch. They play like kittens. One guy will hide and ambush another as they have fun in their day. It can be just pretty cool out in the forest if you sit quietly and watch and listen.

There are so many cool things that happen everyday that most people have no idea how amazing it is right outside your door. Enjoy, hope you love it.

Edit : I saw your worried about snakes and such, nothing to be concerned about. Just look carefully as you move. Very simple with animals you can always make a deal with them. You can look but don't touch. For little critters use a stick. The deal you have to make with any animal is that you always allow them a way to leave. Even the ones you worry about if they can just leave you are fine and they are fine. When they get fed up with you they just want to leave. It is all about survival. We all want to survive. Right ?

The best fishing/camping experience I've had (relatively close to you) would be at Gunflint Pines Lodge MN near the border of Canada.

Go to http://www.gunflintpines.com/camp_cabins.shtml

Camping cabins are fantastic! They eliminate the hassle of tent and camp set-up, are more secure and comfortable than ANY traditional tent camping, have electric facility's for heaters/electric coolers/hot-plates/ Etc and generally sleep better after a hard day of fishing.

The Gunflint Pines lodge is a GREAT fishing destination where you can catch (literally) 50-100 fish per day! Gunflint Pines is located on the border of Canada and has access to tons of fishing opportunity's because of the many various lakes in the region.

And at $57 a night you can't find a better accommodation, (period!).

Gunflint Lake has great Walleye and Lake trout fishing.

Loon Lake has great Small-mouth Bass and Northern fishing.

Go check it out.

Private camping in Illinois?

I'm looking for a place to go camping with a couple friends. But I'm not looking for a campground. I'm looking for more of a random place to walk into the woods and set up some tents and camp preferably with a clean lake or river to swim in

Answer
Before you camp just in a random place in the woods, make sure you get the owners permission first.

Are there any camps in Virginia without recreational facilities?

Prussia

I mean places without playgrounds, parking lots, gift shops, and any of those annoying things.

Answer
Avoid National Parks. Go to National Forest Campgrounds or go dispersed camping or try Virginia State Parks, depending on your level of comfort with primitive, wild, or developed camping.

Horse camps in virginia?

Cheyenne

I'm 16& I would like to go to a horse camp, but I've never heard of any in my area.. I live near Russell county, Va. Is there any, not so expensive, horse camps near me?

Answer
I don't know of any horse camps, but there's plenty of trails around Honaker and Lebanon that you can ride. You should never be at a loss for someplace to ride, just ask around and you'll find plenty of places.
