I live in San Francisco and me and some of my buddies want to go camping for the weekend. Problem is, we don't know where to go. What we're looking for would be something preferably 2-4 hours away from the city, and somewhere relatively remote. A lake would be nice too.
Answer
There are a few places up around Tahoe that have some primitive, more comparably remote camping, such as Buck Lake, etc. I will include a link.

Another option, if you want space is Pyramid Lake in Nevada. Forget about shade, but it is a huge lake and finding space from others is never an issue, especially on the east side. It's on an indian reservation, so you have to buy a tribal camping permit. It is not expensive.
You have some options up around Eagle Lake (CA) as well. There are a number of places to camp where you can have space. Some of the lakes tucked further in are for certain remote.
You could always go up to some of the lakes around Truckee, CA like Boca, but they are from remote.
All of these locations have great fishing if you are into that. The season is closed at Pyramid for trout right now though.

Are there any good places for camping and bonfires in the bay area?

Trying to find a place for a group of about 50 people to have a beach party where we can have a bonfire on the beach and camp.
Answer
I have some friends in San Francisco. They've told about having fires on Baker Beach and Ocean Beach. They say some bums camp in Golden Gate Park. One man went on a camping trip for a couple of days somewhere south of Oakland.
