Some friends and I are planning a trip to California, I am a sucker for Southern CA, but two of my guys friends are trying to convince me that we should go to Northern CA near Campbell, San Jose, Saratoga and San Francisco. What is there to do there? I mean, clearly there is San Francisco, but in specific what is there to do there?
Answer
San Francisco is the most beautiful city I have ever seen. You can enjoy walking the various ethnic neighborhoods, Little Italy and Chinatown being the most picturesque. The Golden Gate is awesome. For me, the real attractions of the area are just outside of SF. Take a drive along Highway 1 in Marin County. See the giant Redwood trees. Lots of terrific places for hiking and camping. Touring the wineries of Napa County is also a lot of fun. In the San Jose area, I recommend going to Palo Alto and touring Stanford University. It is the most beautiful university campus in the world, in my opinion.

What are some good places to tent/car camp within 3 hour drive from San Jose, CA?
Uncle Penn
Seems like every time I go camping, it's always the same no matter where I go. Very dry and brown. Dirt. Slimy or dirty lake.
Maybe this time some place with green grass, nice trees, and a nice lake or river to play in.
Answer
- Big Basin, it's in the Santa Cruz mountains.
- Big Sur, beautiful drive down HWY 1 and you'll also be able to support the regrowth of the area after the fires last summer. Big Sur has amazing hiking, beaches, waterfalls and near Carmel is "the greatest meeting of land and sea", Point Lobos.
- The Pinnacles National Monument (East Side) has a swimming pool and amazing caves to explore.
- Sunset / Manresa beach near Watsonville
All of the above mentioned places are within 2 hours or less of San Jose. Big Basin is about 40 minutes, Big Sur is about 1.5 hours, and Pinnacles is just past Hollister.
Call all of these places beforehand and you will be able to reserve a site and learn about what trails are open.
