I'm looking for a place around MD or VA to go where you can cook and swim around a nice river. If anyone know any place like this, i would really appreciate your answers.

3. Pohick Bay Regional Park
This beautiful park is just 22 miles from Washington, DC. The campground has 150 campsites. There is a lake with boating and fishing, an outdoor swimming pool, miniature golf, hiking trails and picnic shelters.

Hiking/camping in or around Ohio!?

Cupcake

My boyfriend wants me to surprise him with a cool place to go camping for his birthday but I am having trouble finding a new place! We live in northeastern Ohio and someplace in Ohio, western Pennsylvania, northern Kentucky or northern west Virginia would be ideal since gas prices are so killer :p we absolutely LOVE hocking hills, Ohio and ohiopyle, pennsylvania but he wants different and new!! Any places you guys have been that you would suggest? I'm also into photography so places with scenic views are much appreciated! Thank you!

Answer
I've camped in all of those regions and in my opinion West Virginia has the most and best places to camp. There are of course a ton of campgrounds to choose from and there even more places to camp just anywhere in the Monongahela NF (with some restrictions).

If you want Scenic, you can't beat the Seneca Rocks area. In additon to Seneca Rocks there are numerous beautiful streams, canoeing/whitewater, caving, rock climbing, hiking, best trout fishing in the state (stocking now) all very nearby. Big Bend, Seneca Shadows, and Spruce Knob are probably the nicer developed campgrounds in the area.

Spruce knob, Blackwater falls,Dolly Sods are all in the nearby vicinity, very scenic and very unique in habitat.

It is probably too far south for you but the Gauley River and New River Recreational areas are very pretty and offer a ton of activities as well including some of the best whitewater in the nation. An outfitter can get you through those safe and may offer some really nice overnight river trips.

I'd suggest googling the destinations I've mentioned and looking the Mon NF website as well as calling the local district Ranger for more info.
