Where can I find a secluded camping spot close to the beach in the mid-atlantic region?

My fiance and are getting married on July 27th and we would like to camp on the beach for our honeymoon. It would be okay if we are near the beach, but not directly on it, though we'd prefer to be close to the water if possible. We are mostly concerned with privacy, because we do not want to spend our honeymoon with our tent pitched 20 feet away from the next group of campers. We are on a budget and probably can't afford more than $300 or so for the week, and we'd like to stay within a 5 hour drive of Philadelphia. Any ideas?

Answer
First, you are not permitted to camp on the beach in any area of the US that I know of. There are good reasons for this -- people are dumb about tides and would be too likely to set up camp at low tide and then be flooded. Beaches need to be available for day use by most recreational users and campsites would interfere with that. Coastal animals need free access to beach areas during the night. You can't put bathrooms on beaches easily.

So all campgrounds are set back from the beach, often behind a dune or screened by trees, You are also expecting to find a prime campsite in the most desirable sort of areas in the most densely populated part of the country during the peak month for family camping. I doubt at this late date you will be able to find anything resembling what you are asking for that is not already reserved.

Your only hope would be to start now, looking at the Parks department websites for PA, New Jersey, Delaware and Connecticut, looking at all the campgrounds in coastal areas and then attempting to make on line reservations.

Campgrounds, especially near beaches, are always packed in the summer. There is no way you will have privacy in a tent in these areas.

I would suggest giving up the beach idea and looking farther inland. There is a campground at Caledonia State Park off route 30 about a half hour west of Gettysburg that has nice private campsites for tent campers that are away from the bustle of the trailer and RV campers. They have nice bathhouses with hot showers and flush toilets. Not near the ocean but you can ride bikes through the country lanes north of the campground and there is a nice lake with a swimming beach.

The only option I can think of for beach camping and privacy would be if you are willing to backpack. You can go to Assateague Island off the Virginian coast and backpack up the beach 10 miles to a campsite directly behind a dune which can only be reached by hiking. There would no doubt be other people camping there but you would be able to find a place to pitch your tent away from the others. You would have to pack in all your own food AND water though and there are not services -- this is primitive camping.

Truly, I hate to be so pessimistic about this but I have been camping in the Mid Atlantic for 40 years (live in western PA) and used to work for an outfitter and know the situation well. The grim reality is that there are too many people competing for too few campgrounds, especially this summer when the government sequester situation has caused cutbacks in personnel and services to many public camping areas and parks. If this was your dream honeymoon idea you should have made reservations 6 months to a year ago.

How can I get from Pennington New jersey to Woodbury Premium Outlet mall in NY without a car?

I am going to be going to a camp and we have free dats and i really want to do some shopping at Woodbury outlets but i am will not have a car what is the most practical, fastest and cheapest way to get there. And what day of the week is the best to go?

Answer
I can't answer you as far as the travel, but I can tell you that its best to go to the Commons on a weekday. If you do go on a weekend, go early in the morning (9am) as it gets very, very crowded. If you're taking public transportation, you can probably go later. Have fun! The place is huge!
