Jen
I am looking for free camp sites in Western Washington. I have a family of 3 + dog, and we always camp with a family of 4. We'd like to have a bathroom of some sort. After the last 2 state parks I've been to, and the park rangers not being nice at all, we'd like something we don't have to deal with rangers (with attitudes...where'd their smiles and senses of humor go anyways...it's not that big o' deal we'll move the car...we had 1 too many cars in our camp site...oops)
I just want to go and have fun with my friends and family.
Just an FYI, so people reading miss "Cafe'"s response, I am a single mom, who wants to take the kids and dog out camping with friends. I'm a clean, quiet person, who doesn't appreciate having people yelling at me, for their bad day. I NEVER leave a mess behind, even cleaning up after my dog. I usually am cleaning up after the people that left the site to begin with, EVEN in the state parks.

See if you can hunt up one of Ray's Guides to free camping in Washington:

The bathroom part might be hard to come by at a free campground. Good luck on your camping quest!

Mt washington climb compared to Mt Katahdin?
I've hike Katahdin going up the saddle and across the knife edge 10 years ago and am in the same shape. How is Mt Washington in comparison to the Katahdin hike? What trails are similar? Are there any good camping sites, hotels, or micro breweries near the mountain? Thanks in advance.
Answer
Mt Washington is steeper, but if you're in reasonable shape and the weather is OK, it's not hard to hike up and down in a day. Or you can always wimp out and take the train down.
The Mt Washington hotel in Bretton Woods is an expensive and elegant resort at the foot of the mountain. Hikers stay in the AMC's huts, which provide dinner, a bed, and breakfast, three of which are on Mt Washington. Bring your own sheets, book well in advance because they're very popular. They also have two lodges at the base of the mountain with more comfortable accomodations.
