What kind of camping tent is good for 8 people? Hot temperatures and sand at camp site, needs to be light.?

We´re planning to travel to our camping ground by airplane, so it can´t be too heavy. We´ll be 5 people so I´m looking for an 8 person tent. Any advise?

Hi there!

I have a big family and when we do our big leisurely camping trips, we always use our 8-person 2-room camping tent. The best I've found (and the best deal out there in my opinion) is the Columbia Cougar Flats II. It's a 15' x 10' dome tent with two rooms and space for up to eight people - though in my opinion, eight people would be terribly cramped in there. I'd say six max, which sounds perfect for you.

It utilizes the GoBe Dry System to keep all the moisture out in it rains - probably won't be much humidity in the desert, so you're fine there. It has a full seam-taped polyester fly with a waterproof coating as well. The frame is a hybrid steel and fiberglass which I've found to be very durable and long-lasting (this baby's endured the abuse of my family for many many trips now). It is spacious but has lots of storage like pocket pouches, hanging cup holders, lockers and a hanging gear loft.

Coleman tents are excellent value. I have three of them and they have all been brilliant.
You can find them in all outdoor or camping shops or buy online.
They do big family tents and backpacker tents and guarantee the waterproofing. I've never had a single problem with them in years of camping in very wet British weather and on the Alps and Andes and all over Europe.
Coleman is an American company with a world-wide presence, and has a large range of outdoor equipment in it's product list. For value for money Coleman is hard to beat.

Other very good firms to consider are Vango and Lichfield, both in the same group of companies which includes Trangia cooking equipment, and both very well established and highly respected.
Both do family tents and backpacker tents, both are British companies, and both have a very good reputation for quality.
Vango Force Ten tents are favourites on Everest. Vango gets involved with outdoor stuff and is a very good supporter of outdoor events.
My little mountain tent is a Vango and is excellent.
Lichfield isn't as well known but keeps on turning out good tents year after year. It's a solid and reliable company. I have one over thirty years old, bought for a £1. I reproofed it and it does a treat. Lovely tent.
A bit like Rayleigh Roadster bikes really. Not the flashiest around but a good standard bike.
Horace Dall got one across Iceland...the first man to do it on foot and bike right across the middle of Iceland from the south coast to the north. 1933. The bike was still running well forty years later. Horace lived near me in Luton. I learned my first bit of telescope making from him.
He didn't have a tent for the Iceland trip.

A couple of people and myself are planning one in the next couple of years and were wondering what would the best things to pack for a winter start in Georgia. Plus what would be some things that our families could mail us along the way as the weather begins to get warmer?

Several months of free time.

Strong legs and good overall health (well, this is not absolutely necessary, but comes in handy...)

Good, comfortable hiking boots - a "must". Also, keep your feet as dry as possible. If your feet are prone to sweating, change your socks more often, and you can reduce sweating by bathing your feet in a borax solution daily for a couple of weeks before the hike and occasionally during it if the sweating comes back. Proper foot care is VITAL on a long hike. Cut your toe nails regularly, and don't let fungal infections get established between your toes. If you stat to get a blister, put a porous bandaid on it as soon as you notice it: don't let blisters grow.

Lightweight tent that is also durable. Best tent bargains are right now - end of season sales!!

Adequate water containers - you should carry at least a couple of liters at all times, and some water purifying tablets in case you get caught in a situation where you have to use them.

A bit of money for use in emergencies - $100 would be just fine.

A good, easily-carried pack: make sure it doesn't cut into your shoulders when fully loaded, and balance it properly for carrying with minimum back problems. Carry your load fairly high on your shoulders: too low is bad for the lower back.

Contact information to carry with you - not just one telephone number, but a couple and email addresses would be a help in some situations.

Rope - to help secure your tent in storms, for use as clothes-lines, etc. Recommend hemp rope, not nylon or polyester. Rope comes in handy in a variety of situations: don't be caught without it!!

"Emergency kit" - first aid stuff like bandaids, antibiotic ointment, aspirins, triangular bandage etc., and matches in a waterproof container, a few fish hooks and lures..... the ingredients of a good first aid and general survival kit can be found on many websites.

A good general knowledge of edible and medicinal (and poisonous!) plants wouldn't hurt... can come in handy in many situations. For example if you know that jewelweed/"touch me not" is a great antidote for poison ivy, that could save you a lot of itching!! If you know that the common plantain weed is very effective to calm down wasp and bee stings, this could also be very useful, etc.

A "tin can stove": something you can light a little contained fire in when the woods are dry, will come in useful in a variety of situations.

Maps: the trail is well marked, but if you ever get off it somehow, or like to know precisely where you are, a map is really useful!!

Couple of changes of clothing: staying dry is necessary for good sleep and good health.

Rain clothing is a "must"!! It can be very light weight but make sure it is strong and durable.

A few camp cooking things and dishes.

Food to last a few days should be carried: dried food is best. Cans are heavy.

Sun screen, and if you are sensitive, bug repellent (but if you completely ignore bug bites, they go away very quickly).

Be sure to check your body for ticks at the end of each day - if discovered on the same day, hardly ever transmit parasites.

I went camping three times last summer. Now I am planning a winter camping trip and I wonder what special camping equipment should I take since the weather is really cold.

What's the best way t keep the inside of our tent from getting wet?

Ya know.... in the morning????

We're going camping this weekend with the WHOLE family, just like we do every year, but this time we are bringing our 7 month old son.

We live in Washington... and our weather's been especially bad this year. But hopefully it'll be nice this weekend.
Anyway. I guess a lot of what gets into the tent is condensation, but is there any way to keep it dryer?

Oh... AND we're the only ones in our family using a tent.. everyone else has a camper. :(

If the problem is mostly condensation, the the ventilation is not adequate. If it isn't raining, open up the window flaps more so that the humid air can escape. Make sure the top vents are not obstructed, if there are any.

Much of the humidity occurs simply from your breathing.

As for rain, standard waterproofing methods.

Are there any tents that come waterproof,with rain fly,and that include a footprint?

If so, where can you buy them. I was looking at a set. It is called. Columbia Peak Expedition Camp Set. It is great because it includes everything you need. More companies should do this. How do you know what type of footprint to buy?

Most tents that have footprints available have them as a separate option. You can always cut a footprint from 6 mil plastic
Of the tents at REI, the only family type tent I saw that had a footprint available was a Big Agnes
