Answer
It is about 3 hours from Chicago, but check out Apple River Canyon State Park near Galena. It is beautiful.

I know it is farther than you talked about, and COL is nice too. Just trying to expand your options.

Wheres the best place near Chicago to go camping?

Not starved rock, and nowhere that's going to be super-expensive. Also I like hiking trails, river or lake, and hopefully a little elevation/rocks/cliffs something, not just in the woods.

Answer
Below are 4 campgrounds within Illinois. They are between 90 min and about 3 hrs from Chgo. and listed from the closest to the farthest.

Miles of hiking and swimming in Lake Michigan are next to your campsite. Find out below:

Forest trails and moss covered cliffs are near campsites below:

http://dnr.state.il.us/lands/Landmgt/PARKS/R1/WHITEPNS.HTM

5 trails wind through limestone and dolamite formations along the Apple River where you can catch your dinner:

More strenuous trails and climbing will await you here. Outstanding views of the Mississippi River and fishing below:

Where can i rent camping gear near Chicago, IL?

no nicknam

I'm finally taking my family on our first camping trip. But I'm on a tight budget and can't afford new camping gear or used for that matter. I looked it up on craigslist and it's still too expensive for me. Is there any place that can rent me the equipment for the weekend?

Answer
I'm not sure exactly what kind of "gear" you need, but try calling REI (Recreation Equipment, inc.)
REI Lincoln Park Store
(312) 951-6020
1466 N Halsted St, Chicago, IL 60642
I'm pretty sure they rent pup tents, sleeping bags, backpacks, camp stoves, etc. and they have other Chicagoland locations:
Oakbrook Terrace, IL
Northbrook, IL
Schaumburg, IL

_________
and it looks like they are having a free "Camping Basics" event this week (06-04-2012 at the Northbrook location and 06-06-2012 in Schaumburg)

places to camp near chicago?

My friend and I want to go on a trip before summer is over, preferable some place where we could rent an inexpensive cabin, that isn't too far away from chicago. Any ideas?

Answer
No lake cabins close by. There are a couple state parks in the northern half of IL with cabins.

About 100 miles to the SW is Starved Rock State Park on the Illinois River:

http://starvedrocklodge.com/plan-a-visit/

About 110 miles to the west is White Pines State Park. It has cabins in a forested area:

Still farther west in IL are a few more possibilities:

Campgrounds near Chicago?

We're going to Chicago at the end of the month, and still trying to find a good campground. Like one with a pool, and lots of things to do. Maybe even a place that has a DJ a few nights.

If you know a good place, please let me know.

Also, anyone that has been to Hi-Tide Campground, did you like it? We're considering it, but we're still undecided. Thank you! x.

Answer
Can you find something on this list? There at two places on Lake Michigan, Illinois Beach State Park and Indiana Dunes State Park and each campground has a commuter train station about 1.5 miles away from which you can catch a train to downtown Chicago. Metra train from Zion Station for Illinois Beach SP and South Shore Line from Dune Park Station for Indiana Dunes SP. Since they are state parks they won't have all the amenities you want, but being that close to the lake is nice. They might also be booked.

I enjoy hiking, backpacking, and camping (but not in a campground amongst hordes of other campers). Are there places that are good for these sorts of things near Chicago?

I'm guessing there aren't any mountains nearby, since the Chicago area is so flat... but are there at least some forests or something like that?

Thanks!

we live near chicago and are afraid the camping places are already booked up.

Answer
Well you definetly need to get a few fire works or fire crackers! Just to get the party started. Then maybe a bonfire or something.
