Camp Foster, Okinawa Japan?

Hi! i'm a Navy Corpsman going greenside with the marines, and my first duty station is in Camp Foster Okinawa Japan. I wanted to know what there is to do out there. I've talked to the guys in my command but only a few have been there. I've heard about this place called Ken town but that's pretty much it. What about the nightlife, and is it true i have to be back on base at a certain time and such? Any assistance would be great. Thanks guys

The place you're referring to is Kinville... The town not too far outside the gates of Foster. Or Camp Hansen for that matter.
Okinawa was one of my favorite duty stations. You can watch drifting in Naha, take historic tours of the Okinawan battle grounds and tunnels of WWII from a Japanese perspective. You can drink yourself stupid on Gate 2 St outside of Kadena Air Base if that's your thing. Try great food on every corner.
I got SCUBA certified on Okinawa. You can go snorkelling, cliff diving, ocean kayaking.
Man, it was honestly one of the best times of my life.
If you get a chance to go to the Jungle Warfare Training Center up in the Northern Training Area, jump on it. The ropes course, E-course, and rapelling wall there are insanely fun.
Different commands have different policies on liberty hours, etc. Also the SOFA (Status of Forces Agreement you'll get briefed on when you arrive in Oki) changes from time to time, and it has been several years since I've been there.

camp zama japan or vicenza italy?

we are probally moving soon overseas and i was wondering which place would be nicer or better for two army military married adults.

I live in Japan and drive to Camp Zama all the time. It's about 2 hrs away from the base where I live (Yokota AB). There is not much around Camp Zama itself from what I've seen, but living in Japan is a wonderful experience. This is our second time to live here, after we left the first time we immediately started putting in orders to come back and after 6 years we finally got to.

Like I said, there is not much around the immediate area of Camp Zama, (there is a navy base called Atsugi about a 30 min drive from Zama though) but there is a lot to see and do in Japan itself. Tokyo and Mt. Fuji are not that far away, and there are many amusement parks and historical places to visit.

All in all, I love living in Japan, but I guess it depends on what you and your spouse like. Alot of people come here and hate it because they never go off base and experience the sites and culture. All they seem to do is go to bars and they think that's all there is. If you come here, you won't regret it as long as you spend some time off base and experience all that Japan has to offer. Also the extra pay you get for having a high cost of living is nice......

What is the possibility of staying stateside as a Navy MA (Master at Arms)?

I am planning on joining the Navy. I will be going to boot camp as soon as I can and I want to go to MA "A School" for Master-at-Arms. I want to know how likely is it that I will get to stay stateside? If not what other locations will I be able to go to. Will i get to go to cool places such as Japan or something like that? Please let me know!!!

slim. most duty stations and nearly all deployment locations are OCONUS.

Hi I am leaving for boot camp in a month and my fiance is concerned that i will be stationed overseas after my Master at Arms A school. Is there a likely possibility of this happening? No rude answers please, because i would just would like some information.

Yes there is a chance you can be stationed overseas in a place like Japan, Guam, Spain, Italy, Greece, etc.. With this it means that there is a good chance that if you do get married she will not be able to join you at all for you were Single when you got the orders and the Navy can require you to be E4 or higher for the orders to be accompanied. But then again you might be stationed stateside.

Well i am doing a massive research paper and i was just wondering what were the positive outcomes of the internment camps
what did the government gain from the interment camps?
Did it help to tip the favor of the war in the U.S direction?
Any economical advancements from it?
Who gained from the Japanese being in internment camps?

I've been to a couple of talks given by internment camp detainees and I just can't think of anything positive, sorry...nothing other than how we can learn from history and not imprison citizens on a massive scale like that again.

Who gained? The local people who lived nearby the business and homes that were abandoned by Japanese-Americans. These were taken over and those in the camps lost pretty much everything. A few of them had really good friends who watched over their property while they were gone but most have tragic stories.

Some people were so disillusioned with America due to that experience that even though they didn't speak Japanese or had ever been to Japan, they renounced their American citizenship. I can't ever imagine being in such a situation and I hope I never have to.

Some people were returned to war-devastated Japan. Can you imagine being dropped off in Hiroshima after the bomb? yeah, that sucks. Also, Japanese were taken from South America and interned in America. This was part of a hostage exchange America was doing but it resulted in the tragedy spreading outside our country to people not involved, which is another point in history we should not repeat. These Japanese descent Latin Americans were stripped of their home citizenship and once released from American camps were illegal aliens with nowhere to go to. They are not eligible for repatriations, even though some of them stayed in the US and became legal citizens. Imagine if you have some European blood, whatever country, take your pick, and they go to war and you are shipped over to Europe and placed in a camp and lose your American citizenship and now you're in a country illegally and you don't speak the language.

Of course, it wasn't just Japanese-descent in the camps but that was whom Executive Order 9066 was ordered at. It's a dark place in history and I used to have a copy of that order on my living room wall as a reminder: never again.

I highly suggest if you have the time to get in touch with the Japanese American National Museum and they have a good research library on this topic. Although, you might have to go in person and if you're not in the Los Angeles area it will be difficult. There may be other smaller Japanese American museums, exhibits, or research libraries in your area.
