Well in Oak Grove, Missouri (about 30 miles from Kansas City, KS and MO), there is a KOA right off of I-70. I go there all the time on my monthly trip to Worlds of Fun from St. Louis to Kansas City, MO.

Camping in Missouri/Kansas?

ttiwnoved2

My boyfriend and I are going to be staying with a relative in Kansas City then looking to go camping. Any recomendations? We have a tent and would like something with toilets and showers but not much else. Water nearby for tubing or kayaking.

Answer
Two places in Missouri you may want to consider.

1st is the Meramac State Park. Father from KC though. About 50 miles west of St. Louis via I-55. Very nice area. And I have included a link.

Other is the Lake Of The Ozarks. Specifically the Osage river. Going south on highway 54 just prior to getting to the big lake you will see several places that offer tent camping. And you can tube and go kayaking on the Osage.

Osage Beach just south of there on 54 has one of the largest outlet malls in the Midwest-should you decide to go shopping too.

Answer
Stake out your own race weekend headquarters by camping out at Kansas Speedway!

If you're one of the growing numbers of people who travel from race to race in your own motorhome, we want to extend a big Kansas Speedway welcome to you! At Kansas Speedway, motorhomes and motorsports go together like pit crews and wrenches.

To make your RV stay here with us as comfortable and as enjoyable as possible, we offer several camping options to choose from the Blue Ox Reserved Infield, Blue Ox Motorhome Terrace and Blue Ox Campground.

Blue Ox Campground

If the infield isn't your preference and you have tickets to the races, the Kansas Campground is the place for you. Set up your weekend in our 561-space campground. The Kansas Campground is located off Daytona Drive, on the southeast corner of Kansas Speedway's property. Camp with us at night, and we'll give you a lift to the grandstand for the events in the morning!

Blue Ox Campground ... $210 for the season

Here's what you need to know about Kansas Speedway's Blue Ox Campground:

Must get on waitlist to be offered a RV space ($25 deposit)
One complimentary add-on vehicle pass per RV space purchased
All motor home units must be self-contained with running water and a holding tank for wastewater

Blue Ox Reserved Infield

Watch all the pageantry and excitement of NASCAR and the IRL from the middle of the action. The speedway's Reserved Infield is right in the center of it all! Click here for more information about the Reserved Infield.

Kansas Speedway's camping spots are sold as a season, just like our race tickets.

Just like race cars, these spaces go fast!

This summer my friend and I are planning to go on a road trip, what would the total cost be?

sal38

We're starting from north Jersey to around Kansas City, is our destination, but we'll probably explore its neighboring states as well. I calculated on this site that the gas would cost about 400$ for there and back. But how much would it cost for food and everything? We're planning on car camping or something and not using many diners or fast food places- just occasionally. Plus we're most likely going to shop. We might have 2 more people with us so splitting the cost would be good, but how much would the total cost be for everything?? If you could help me out that would be great.

Answer
I am not sure what car camping is. Realistically, I wouldn't plan on 4 people spending every night in the car. Or are you taking a tent and staying in campgrounds? If you're staying in modest motels, plan on $40 per night minimum. For campsites, maybe $15 to $20.

You don't mention how long you will be gone. If you're eating out of a cooler every meal, maybe $10 a day, maybe less if you're just eating peanut butter sandwiches. Some of that cost is to replenish ice.

I would plan on a minimum of $100 a day. Be careful and have fun!

Where is a good place to float in Central Missouri?

We are trying to find a place to float/camp for my dad's birthday this year. We live in Kansas City and he dad lives in St. Louis. We are looking for a place around Columbia or the least amount of driving for all of us.

Answer
Really are not float-able rivers in the Columbia Area. Most of the good float streams are in the southern part of the state. There are many off Highway 44 such as the Current, Meremac, Huzzah and Courtois, These will be a short drive for you but a much longer drive from KC. We just recently went from St Louis to KC to Springfield/Branson and 44 back to St Louis with a stop at Bennett Springs. There isnt any short route from KC to Highway 44. We took Highway 7 to Highway 13 to 44 but it was a three hour drive. However, there is one place that does a guided kayak/canoe float on the Missouri river out of Rocheport which is along the Katy Trail. Its not your usual float trip but might be interesting. Mighty Mo Canoe Rental is the one who does this.

Is there anywhere you can legally camp out in your truck for a night in Colorado Springs?

krillzth

A buddy and I are going on a trip there, coming from Kansas, and we don't want to pay for 3 nights at a hotel because it is expensive. We only booked two nights. The third night we are just going to sleep, and head back home in the morning.

This website is a good resource for free or cheap places to camp out.

What is the best place to camp near Wichita, KS?

We're taking our kids 3 & 6 and would like to get a good night sleep. We'll be staying 2 to 4 nights. Bathroom cleanliness is very important to me. I'm leaning towards Harvey County East Park. I'm also considering Santa Fe Lake and Campground, as well as Boulder Bluff Trail.

I looked at El dorado but it only has 2 stars for cleanliness in Frommer's best Campgrounds. I might reconsider El dorado if we decide to stay in a cabin. So give me any info you could.

If you could also include what did you do for entertainment while visiting this area and what the whole family enjoy the most? I've found some stuff on line but if you've been to these places please give me your opinion.

Kansas Kids Unltd. More than a Museum, Kansas Cosmosphere & Space Center, Old Cowtown Museum, Museum of World Treasures, Exploration Place, Kansas Splashdown Indoor Water Park, Salt City Splash Aquatic Center, Clearwater Aquatic Park. Our kids also love go-karts and mini golf if you know of any in the area.

Thanks for your help!

Answer
Check out Lake Afton. The bathrooms should be OK, I've never had any problems with them being dirty. There is the Lake Afton Observatory, which is really cool for the kids. In West Wichita, about 30 minutes away, there is All Star Sports, which has both mini golf and a go kart track.

Derby has a new water park that the kids will love. Exploration place is OK. The Museum of World Treasures is a joke. Old Cowtown is pretty lame, unless your kids like Little House on the Prairie books. Check out a Wichita Wranglers baseball game, especially on fireworks night.

Hope this helps

What permits do I need to camp in a Kansas state park?

Matt and C

Hello!! I have reserved a cabin in Clinton state park in Kansas, but Iâm not sure what permits I need. Iâve read in different places about a Vehicle permit but am unsure if that only applies to things like RVs and campers? Iâve also seen a permit to stay overnight but Iâm unsure if that is only for tent camping or if it also applies to the cabins. Any help is greatly appreciated!!
Thank you for the link but it does not specify any of the questions that I asked.

Are there any pet friendly campsite/swimming areas in the north eastern part of Missouri?

Ashley K

I have looked around the web a bit and I can't seem to find much. We live around Kansas City and don't want to travel more than an hour or two, but we would love for the whole family to be able to camp, including our dog. A lot of the campsites are pet friendly but what do you do with your dog when the family goes swimming in the lake or river?

Answer
You might try this:
www.basswoodresort.com
www.mostateparks.com/twainpark
www.campdownunder.com

Looks like a good alternative to tent sleeping and this way you could keep you and your dog in a safer place than a tent (weather and otherwise!)

Crate your dog while you swim - provide plenty of water and shade if outside and his/her favorite toy or chewie. Keep the crate within sight or if you have an RV or a cabin keep the door locked. Or have one family member play with the dog, etc. and take turns swimming.
Here is a link on how to camp/swim with a dog.
Hope you find what you are looking for!
